Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast will become an intense
storm near Nantucket this Tuesday morning, then move off the
Maritimes by Tuesday night. A blustery unstable northwest flow
will follow through much of the week with a reinforcing cold
front crossing the region on Thursday. Cold high pressure may
build in at the end of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
1230 AM ESTF: Pops updated to 100% through e PA and NJ
overnight and 100% Monmouth to MPO 12-14z Tuesday.

No substantial change to snow map. SPS issued around 1123 PM
will hold for now. Forecast looks for banding to expand the next
5 hours.

While the primary forcing is 40 miles offshore as you can see
from the radar at 05z... ie...a 50 NM shift in the storm track
to the west would probably have meant an easy 6-12" along the
coast....not to be. Still, banding is occuring and snow ratios
are higher so at elevation, there is going to be some significant
accumulations.

Otherwise at lower elevations...despite the surface temperatures
cooling early today, accumulations may be more difficult on
treated surfaces due to the lighter intensity. Most of the snow
accumulations will occur prior to sunrise today with an
additional inch or two possible Monmouth to Morris and Sussex
Counties in nrn NJ after 12z. There should definitely be
morning commute impacts near and north of I78. The Winter
Weather Advisory is maintained as is, where an area of
widespread 2-4 inches of snow is expected.

Mixed clouds and sun and blustery this afternoon with a northwest
wind gusting 25-35 mph and maybe some scattered flurries except
scattered snow showers Poconos.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/...
Becoming mostly clear. A westerly wind with scattered gusts
15-20 MPH.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The most notable thing about this period is the relatively slow
large scale upper level pattern. The coastal low off our coast today
is not expected to get any further than Newfoundland by Saturday,
keeping us under northerly or northwesterly flow.

Wednesday and Thursday...Through this period, expect a pair of upper
level short wave troughs to dig south over our region on the back
side of the main upper level trough. That, combined with the fetch
from the Great Lakes could result snow showers, especially across
the Poconos and Northwest New Jersey. There remains a potential,
primarily during the day on Wednesday, for snow squalls. However,
the 12Z model runs backed off slightly on the temperature lapse
rates. Consequently, low level CAPE is limited. However, there
remains enough of a signal to keep the mention of snow squalls in
our hazardous weather outlook. If snow squalls do develop, a quick
inch of accumulation is possible. Much less of a potential for snow
squalls when the second shortwave trough propagates over us on
Thursday. Day time temperatures are expected to remain below normal
through this period thanks to continued cold air advection. Highs
each day are expected to be in the 40s except across the higher
terrain of the southern Poconos and northwest NJ where highs should
be in the 30s.

Friday through Monday...As mentioned previously, we expect to mostly
stay in a northwest flow pattern. However, models are depicting a
surface low and upper level trough propagating east over the
southern Plains towards the end of the week. Some previous model
runs depicted the track of this low close enough that the associated
warm front propagates into our region for the weekend. However, with
the main upper level trough staying over eastern Canada through this
time, the track of the southern low would likely stay further
south.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Early this morning...VFR CIGS occasionally IFR conds in snow
with 06z TAFS attempting to time the end of the IFR risk in
snow beginning 08z ILG and arriving RDG PHL MIV ard 11z and ABE
TTN ard 13z.

Today after 12z....MVFR conditions early where any snow remains
then VFR sct-bkn aoa 4000 ft. Northwest winds 12-18 knots with
gusts up to 30 knots. A few late afternoon snow showers are
possible in the vicinity of RDG and ABE.

Tonight...VFR conditions expected with westerly winds around 10
to 15 KT.

Outlook...

Wednesday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected. However, snow
showers, and possibly some snow squalls could move over the
southeastern PA TAF sites (KRDG and KABE) during the afternoon,
reducing conditions to IFR briefly. Rain showers may also move into
the Delaware Valley TAF sites (KPHL, KPNE, KILG, and KTTN) and the
coastal NJ TAF sites (KMIV and KACY), but not as high of a chance in
these locations. Westerly winds could gust as high as 25 KT.
Moderate confidence.

Wednesday night and Thursday...mainly VFR are expected but another
round of snow showers could briefly reduce visibility to MVFR.
Northwesterly wind generally 10 to 15 KT. Moderate confidence.

Friday and Saturday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected with a
northwesterly wind of 5 to 15 KT. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Gales in progress most of the waters at this time with NAM MOS
guidance a better indicator of gust transfer reality. The winds
become northwest during the day and gales should gradually
diminish later today. WW3 seas were very poor for this evening
and we reissued the MWW and CWF around midnight to increase the
seas by 3-5 feet this morning. We have no SJSN4 data so we're
not exactly sure of winds speeds over the upper part of DE Bay

Tonight...SCA expected with isolated gale force west northwest
gusts possible.

Outlook...
Wednesday through Friday...SCA likely most of this period
(blustery northwest flow). Gale force gusts possible Wednesday
afternoon and Wednesday night. Moderate confidence.

Saturday...winds and seas should stay below SCA criteria. High
confidence.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Still a risk of coastal flooding this mornings high tide Ocean
County to the DE Atlc coast area but at this time our merged
TWL guidance says just below. Wind direction near the 6am high
tide will ultimately determine how much surge at high tide
which is currently anticipated to be around 2 feet. We may need
a last minute 430 am issuance there based on surge trends as the
tide cycle marches up to high tide.

An examination of the latest gridded ETSS and ESTOFS (GFS-
based) and multi-model ensemble guidance indicates that coastal
flooding is expected to be at worst, minor. On the coast of
Delaware Bay, spotty minor flooding is forecast during the
Tuesday morning high tide. Levels will be elevated on the tidal
portions of the Delaware River, but they are expected to remain
below advisory levels at this point.

Beyond this morning, surface flow is expected to become strong
and offshore, limiting the threat of flooding with subsequent
high tides. However, confidence is a little lower on the NJ
coast where surge will be higher, so coastal flooding cannot be
ruled out for the Tuesday evening high tide. However, the
astronomical tide will be lower for the evening high tide,
likely limiting the threat.

inch or so in some places...
