The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which is in effect from 8 AM Sunday to 8 PM EDT Monday. * HEAT INDEX VALUES...100 to 105 degrees on Sunday and 103 to 107 degrees on Monday due to temperatures in the middle to upper 90s and dew points in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Looking ahead, Heat Index values will likely exceed 100 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. * TIMING...The highest heat index values will occur from the late morning into the early evening. * IMPACTS...The heat may be life threatening to the elderly and those in poor health, due to prolonged exposure without air conditioning, especially those in urban centers where low temperatures in the middle 70s will offer little relief. The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Take extra precautions...if you work or spend time outside. When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work...the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency...call 9 1 1. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
341 PM EDT Fri Jun 29 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build across the area today then move offshore
this weekend through early next week as a strong upper level ridge
builds along the east coast. This ridge looks to dominate through
at least the middle of next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Beautiful day out there today will turn into a quiet evening across
the region.
A warm night is in store for the region as surface high pressure
continues to build into the area. The northwest to west flow across
the area this afternoon will become light and variable through the
overnight hours. Even with the light winds and clear skies across
the region tonight, we won't see as much cooling occur as the
general flow turns more to the south and southwest.
Low temperatures will be similar to last night with mid 60s to lower
70s across much of the area, and some lower 60s across the higher
elevations of northwest New Jersey and the southern Poconos. Urban
areas around Philadelphia will remain in the low-mid 70s
overnight.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
A warm start to the day, especially in Philadelphia and nearby
suburban areas where temps will start off in the low to mid 70s.
Skies will be mostly sunny with only some fair weather cumulus
developing towards Saturday afternoon.
850 temps rise to around 20-22C across the region which translates
to high temperatures reaching into the mid 90s. Once again, the wind
will play a factor in how hot it feels on Saturday. There will be
plenty of sunshine to go around with few clouds around. Winds will be
out of the west to southwest and are expected to pick up as we head
into the afternoon and peak heating hours. With enough mixing
occurring during the day, we will see heat index values rise into
the mid to upper 90s. A few areas may near or just reach 100 but
expect us to largely remain below advisory criteria. Even with no
advisory in place for Saturday, please be sure to take it easy if
out in the sun and drink plenty of water.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Summary...The big story will be the heat through at least mid
week next week. Dry conditions are expected until Wednesday when
chances for showers and thunderstorms return through the end of
the work week.
Details...
Sunday through Tuesday...We have high confidence of reaching
excessive heat warning criteria in the urban corridor from
Wilmington to Trenton (including Philadelphia). This has been
depicted in the models for the last few days, so have gone
straight to an excessive heat warning for these areas. The big
difference from previous forecasts is that heat index values
north of this area (north of the 95 corridor in NJ, excluding
Sussex Co NJ) have increased. With the current forecast have
locations around 105 for max Heat Index Values. In these areas
have gone with an excessive heat watch for now, but this may
need to be upgraded later. Outside of this area, the maximum
heat index value looks to be between 100 and 105. Thus have an
advisory for most of the area, with the exception of rural
Delmarva and far southern NJ, where the higher criteria of 105
degrees won't quite be met. Another exception is the higher
terrain of the southern Poconos and the coastal areas which
should stay below the 100 degree heat index threshold.
The current forecast is on the higher side of guidance,
especially higher than operational models, given their known
bias in having difficulty in resolving events that are near
climatological maximums.
Regardless of the heat headlines, given the prolonged nature of
this event, this will be a very dangerous heat wave. For now,
the headlines only go through Monday, but it will likely need to
be extended at least until Tuesday, if not through Wednesday.
Wednesday...Thanks to a mid and upper level short wave trough
still forecast to dig southeast across the region on this day,
we should see some very slight relief in the heat. With still
very humid conditions in place, we may still even have heat
headlines, but the air temperatures should be a few degrees
lower.
Thursday and Friday...Another short wave trough is expected to
dig over the area, extending the chances for showers and
thunderstorms through the end of the work week. Longer range
models are depicting a cold front approaching our region at the
very end of this period, though it is uncertain how quickly it
will be able to propagate south, of if it will even be able to
get this far south. However, models are also in relatively good
agreement that the mid and upper level high responsible for the
heat wave should be retrograding, shifting over the central
U.S. by next weekend.

.AVIATION /19Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...Mainly VFR conditions expected. Scattered Cu this
afternoon will dissipate this evening leaving clear skies for the
overnight. Northwest to west winds around 10 knots this afternoon
will become light and variable overnight. A sea breeze has reached
KACY turning winds to the south-southeast this afternoon before
going light and variable overnight.
Saturday...VFR conditions expected. Scattered CU may develop towards
the afternoon. Light winds through the morning becoming southwest
around 5 to 10 knots.
Outlook..
Sunday through Tuesday...VFR conditions expected with light
winds. Dangerously hot conditions at most of the TAF sites.
High confidence.
Wednesday...Mostly VFR conditions. There is a chance of showers
and thunderstorms for the SE PA and Delaware Valley TAF sites.
If they move over a TAF site, MVFR or lower conditions are
possible. Moderate confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Relatively quiet conditions are expected across the areas waters
through Saturday.
Seas on the ocean will be around 2 to 3 feet and seas along the
Delaware Bay are expected to remain around 1 to 2 feet.
Outlook...
Sunday through Wednesday...Winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria.
Rip Currents...
Wind speeds are forecast to be 10 MPH or less for today and wave
heights will subside gradually. As a result, there is a low risk for
the development of dangerous rip currents for today. We are
forecasting the risk for tomorrow to be low as well.
