* TIMING...Dense fog has developed and will continue through the
  overnight hours before gradually improving after sunrise.
  Southwest winds will increase Wednesday morning, then quickly
  shift to the west-northwest as a strong cold front crosses the

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift across our region through tonight, then a
strong cold front sweeps across our area around midday Wednesday.
High pressure is forecast to follow for Thursday. Another cold front
is expected Friday night, then low pressure is anticipated to track
off the Mid-Atlantic coast Saturday night. High pressure builds in
on Sunday and Monday, then low pressure approaches from the west and
south on Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
For the 930 PM update, delayed the warming across the northern areas
especially. Added more fog coverage across the northern and western
areas due to visibilities coming down now. May need a Dense Fog
Advisory for at least parts of the area (especially from about the
Philadelphia metro area on north and west), however for now opted to
issue a Special Weather Statement. Dense fog may try to advect
onshore from the marine area overnight. Some showers continue across
the southern areas, however these should exit the coast over the
next hour or two. Some additional showers cannot be ruled out
elsewhere for awhile tonight otherwise some drizzle possible north
of the warm front.

Otherwise, the warm front will slowly push north across the area
late tonight so we expect temperatures to rise with the more notable
rise closer to daybreak. Low clouds along with some fog will occur
especially near and north of the warm front, with some possible
clearing south of the warm front. Some clearing already appears to
be occurring early this evening across the far southern areas,
however as warmer and more humid air advects north later tonight
some fog may develop over the ocean waters and try and advect into
the coastal areas. The fog will be dense in spots especially
northern areas along and north of the I-78 corridor. However
overnight there could actually be some improvement as the gradient
flow and associated mixing starts to strengthen.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Active weather day shaping up for Wednesday...

Interesting set up for Wednesday as a deepening surface low moves
east-northeast across the lower Great Lakes, sweeping a strong cold
front across our area. To begin the day, our area will be in warm
sector with southwest winds increasing. However, the concern will be
in the late morning through the first part of the afternoon (roughly
11am - 3pm) as a strong cold front moves across the area.

Model guidance suggesting 200-300 J/KG of MLCAPE ahead of the front.
Not very high values, however the dynamics with the aformentioned
low will be strong with 0-1/0-3/0-6 km shear values forecast to be
30/50/55 knots respectively indicating at least some potential for
severe weather with any heavier convective elements with the front.
Much of the hi-res guidance suggests a narrow convective line tied
close to the cold front which races eastward across the area, and
this may intensify some into the I-95 corridor on south and east.
Best chances for strong to severe convection looks to be central and
southern parts of the forecast area from southeast PA through
central and southern NJ and especially Delmarva. A line of showers
with embedded storms looks to move through from west to east around
midday with locally damaging winds possible. Forecast soundings
suggest downward momentum transfer maximizes right near the front,
and a unidirectional wind profile through the column suggests the
potential for embedded bowing segments. The Storm Prediction Center
has included much of our area in the risk for some severe weather
Wednesday.

Following the passage of the cold front, strong gradient west-
northwest winds will move in with a deep mixed layer indicated in
the forecast soundings. Strong pressure rises right behind the cold
front combined with strong cold air advection will rapidly aid in
deeper mixing with stronger winds reaching the surface. It is at
this time we expect widespread west-northwest winds of 20-30 mph
with gusts up to 50 mph. As a result, a Wind Advisory has been
issued for the entire area. Midday highs will range from the mid 50s
north to the mid to upper 60s central/south before temperatures begin
falling through the afternoon in the wake of the front.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The progressive pattern is forecast to continue during the period
from Wednesday night through Tuesday.

High pressure is expected to begin building into our region on
Wednesday night. The gusty northwest wind during the evening hours
should diminish a bit overnight. Dry weather is anticipated.

The center of high pressure is forecast to slide to our south on
Thursday. The pattern should maintain a brisk westerly wind in our
region. No precipitation is expected on Thursday. We may see an
increase in high clouds ahead of our next weather system at that
time.

Low pressure is expected to move from the eastern Great Lakes on
Friday morning to Atlantic Canada on Saturday morning. It should
pull a cold front through our region on Friday night. Precipitation
in the developing warm advection ahead of the system is anticipated
to arrive late on Thursday night. The potential for precipitation
continues through Friday and into Friday night with the frontal
passage. Based on the thermal profiles, most of the precipitation
will fall as rain. However, there could be a little snow in our
northern counties for a time on Thursday night and again on Friday
night. The shot on Thursday night could leave a light accumulation.

A wave of low pressure is forecast to ride along the trailing cold
front. The low is expected to pass across the southeastern states on
Friday night and Saturday before passing off the Middle Atlantic
coast on Saturday night. It should bring additional rain to our
region for Saturday and Saturday evening.

High pressure is expected to push down from the Great Lakes for
Sunday and Sunday night.

Another complex forecast is setting up for early in the new week.
Low pressure is expected to approach from the west with its energy
transferring to a develop coastal low. The system is anticipated to
bring additional precipitation to our region at that time.

Temperatures during the period from Wednesday night through Tuesday
will continue to be more normal for early March than for early April
with one exception. Afternoon readings should be near normal on
Friday.

.AVIATION /02Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...IFR/LIFR conditions due to low clouds and fog/mist (few
showers this evening mainly south and east of PHL). Some improvement
may occur after 07z especially from about PHL on south and east as a
warm front lifts northward, however the extent and timing remains
less certain. Light east to southeast surface winds will start to
become more southerly overnight and increase toward morning.
Southwesterly low-level wind shear (40 knots near 2,000 feet)
develops later this evening and continues through the overnight. Low
to moderate confidence.

Wednesday...A strong cold front moves through west to east near
midday with mostly a narrow band of heavier showers and some
embedded thunderstorms. MVFR/IFR in the morning, then again with
showers/thunderstorms in the late morning and early afternoon. Given
less confidence in thunderstorm coverage, a mention is not included
in the TAFs. Improving conditions may occur faster than what is
currently indicated in the TAFs. Southwest winds around 10 knots,
quickly shifts to west-northwest and increases to 15-25 knots with
gusts to around 40 knots.

Outlook...
Wednesday night and Thursday...Mainly VFR. Gusty west-northwest
winds diminishing Wednesday night.

Thursday night...Mainly VFR. A chance of rain around KRDG and KABE
after midnight.

Friday...Conditions possibly lowering to MVFR with a chance of rain.

Friday night...Mainly VFR with a chance of light rain and light snow.

Saturday and Saturday evening...Conditions possibly lowering to MVFR
with a chance of rain.

Late Saturday night and Sunday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the overnight through mid-morning
Wednesday time frame for the New Jersey Atlantic coastal waters. Fog
is expected to expand and become dense. This advisory may need to be
expanded farther south.

Tonight...Winds becoming southerly everywhere overnight and will
rapidly increase from south to north late, reaching advisory
criteria. Gusts should hit gale force over ocean waters toward
morning, however this may be delayed due to much warmer air
advection northward over the colder waters. Some showers mainly this
evening, and fog is expected to develop.

Wednesday...Gale conditions expected to develop on the Bay and
continue over the ocean waters with strong southerly winds shifting
to west-northwest in the afternoon behind a strong cold front. The
strongest winds may end up occurring behind the cold front due to
strong cold air advection developing during the afternoon.

Outlook...
Wednesday night...A Gale Warning continuing on Delaware Bay
until 10:00 PM, and on our ocean waters until 4:00 AM for west
northwest gale force gusts.

Thursday...West northwest gusts around 25 knots are possible.

Thursday night...No marine headlines are anticipated.

Friday...South to southwest wind gusts of 25 to 30 knots. Local gale
force gusts are possible.

...FOG WILL BECOME DENSE FOG IN SPOTS THIS EVENING...

At 930 PM...Widespread fog has developed across central and
northwestern New Jersey as well as eastern Pennsylvania. The fog
will become dense in spots this evening and into the overnight
with visibility reduced to one-quarter mile at times.

If driving tonight, use extra caution and be prepared for sudden
reduction in visibility. Allow yourself extra time to reach your
destination. If you encounter dense fog, reduce speed and keep a
safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you.

...Areas of dense fog overnight...

Fog has developed in much of eastern Pennsylvania and northern and
central New Jersey late this evening and is expected to continue
through much of the overnight hours. Visibility between a half
mile and two miles is likely for much of the area, with local
visibilities reduced to a quarter mile in spots.

Use extra caution traveling overnight. Use low-beam headlights,
slow down, and maintain extra distance from other vehicles.
