EDT MONDAY...
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Coastal
Flood Warning, which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 1 PM
EDT Monday. The Coastal Flood Watch is no longer in effect.
* LOCATIONS...Coastal areas of Northern New Jersey
* COASTAL FLOODING...Moderate flooding is possible with the high
tides this evening and Monday Morning.
* TIMING...Flooding may occur for a few hours around the time of
high tide. High tide on the New Jersey oceanfront occurs
between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM this evening, and between 8:00 AM
and 9:00 AM Monday morning. High tide on the back bays and
along Raritan Bay occurs later than the high tide on the
oceanfront.
* SURGE...2 to 3 feet above the astronomical tide this evening
and Monday morning.
* WAVES...Wave heights on the ocean waters off the coast are
forecast to be 7 to 12 feet.
* IMPACTS...For the high tides this evening and Monday Morning,
numerous roadways may flood and minor and minor to moderate
property damage is possible. The tides and wave action could
result in moderate beach erosion. In addition, heavy rain
tonight into Monday could further exacerbate impacts.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or
imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert
for rising water...and take appropriate action to protect life
and property.
Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters. The water may be
deeper than you think it is. You will be putting yourself in
danger and your vehicle may be damaged...leading to costly
repairs.

the high tide late this morning.
* TIMING...High tide and the threat of coastal flooding on the
oceanfront has passed but will persist through early this
afternoon in the back bays and along the Delaware Bay.
* SURGE...2 to 3 feet above the astronomical tide.
* WAVES...5 to 10 feet on the Atlantic coastal waters.
* IMPACTS...The combination of freshwater runoff from heavy rain
earlier this morning and tidal flooding will lead to road
closures in flood prone areas as well as generally minor
property damage in back bay communities and along the Delaware

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will traverse a stationary front located south of the
area from the Ohio Valley today through the Middle Atlantic on Monday,
when its accompanying cold front will sweep through the region. This
will be followed by several weak troughs of low pressure Monday night
and Tuesday, until another area of low pressure organizing over the
Midwest and its associated fronts move through the area on Thursday,
and slowly offshore of New England on Friday. Canadian high pressure
will move into the area for next weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Backdoor cold front has made for a drastically different day.
Overcast conditions with some patchy drizzle/mist/fog,
temperatures 25-40 degrees colder, and gusty onshore flow have
generated a sufficiently miserable weather day for the northern
Mid-Atlantic. The front is readily apparent on GOES-E satellite
imagery, still making steady progress southward through the DC
area eastward to the far southern portions of Delmarva. Where
this front stalls and then how far this front surges north
tonight are the main forecast concerns.
Through this evening, expect the area to remain on the poleward
side of the front, with continued cloudy/cold/damp conditions
with strong east-northeast winds gusting 30 to 40 mph. However,
as the front retreats northward overnight, should see winds
beginning to decrease (at least somewhat) in closer proximity to
the front. This will also allow for a highly non-diurnal trend
in temperatures, likely rising through the night south of the
I-76 corridor and staying steady or slowly rising to the north.
Models are beginning to hone in on a solution regarding the
development of precipitation in advance of the cold front
approaching the area late tonight and tomorrow. With substantial
large-scale lift via warm-air advection aided by a
strong/strengthening synoptically-forced low-level jet stream,
considerable differential cyclonic vorticity advection
downstream of a potent vort max pivoting to a more northwest-
to-southeast orientation (i.e., a trough axis becoming
negatively tilted), and improving jet coupling and attendant
upper-level divergence, precipitation should break out to our
south (process already appears to be starting) and move
northward into the CWA late this afternoon and evening.
One of the particular forecast challenges is when more
appreciable precipitation begins in the southern Poconos, where
temperatures remain near freezing this afternoon. Models
continue to depict the threat of this late this afternoon and
this evening, but have overdone the threat in general so far.
Nevertheless, I still think that models are warming this region
too fast this evening/overnight, and the threat of some glazing
on elevated surfaces remains in this area. Again, impacts are
not expected to be significant given the warm antecedent
conditions (and now, the narrowing time window of the threat),
but cannot discount the possibility of measurable freezing rain
up here...and it may last much longer into the night than models
are suggesting.
Hi-res models depict a rather showery look to the precip, and
elevated instability will be increasing (aided by cooling aloft
via isentropic ascent). Think thunder chances are sufficiently
high for inclusion in the grids this evening, generally
along/south of the I-76 corridor. Given the strong winds aloft,
cannot rule out some gusty winds with any showers that develop,
but the stable layer north of the boundary should preclude much
of a severe threat.
This, of course, may change as the backdoor front retreats
northward. High-resolution models place the front in portions
of Delmarva and far southern New Jersey near daybreak, but I do
not have a lot of confidence on this placement. Models tend to
progress these fronts too far northward, and I suspect this is
the case here as well. I did slow its progress somewhat from hi-
res model consensus (HRRR/RAP, NAM Nest, WRF-ARW/NMM, RGEM), but
not a whole lot from the previous forecast (not enough
confidence to do that yet). Given its general placement,
including severe wording (damaging winds) as a possibility
along/south of the Mason-Dixon Line late tonight (gusty winds to
the north). The low-CAPE/high-shear setups are always a
challenge, and the placement of the front and the quite marginal
surface-based instability are certainly adding to the
challenge. Nevertheless, with shear profiles exceptionally good
(given the pronounced veering in the low levels downstream of
the front and resultant very large low-level SRH), sufficient
instability would lead to potential for locally severe storms.
Finally, QPF looks quite substantial during the 06Z to 12Z
period, especially near/northwest of the urban corridor, where
6-hour totals of 0.75-1.5 inches are likely. Flash flood
guidance is high, and my thinking is that any flash flooding
threat would be rather isolated. Nevertheless, nuisance/urban
flooding is probable, and the timing of the main line of
convection moving through the area (generally after 4 am) means
that impacts to the morning rush may occur.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY/...
Front moves through the area early in the day, which is not
entirely favorable for generation of surface-based instability
and a more appreciable severe threat as the strongly-forced
convection moves through. Nevertheless, the degree of shear is
large (0-6 km bulk shear in excess of 60 kts and 0-3 km SRH in
excess of 300 J/kg) near/south of the retreating warm front.
Certainly cannot rule out damaging gusts or even a tornado
(though the threat of tornadoes seems low given the marginal
surface-based instability). Main convective line should move
out of the area by late morning.
Threat of training convection and locally heavy rain exists,
with an isolated instance of flash flooding plausible. Current
thinking is this threat is too low for a watch, but this will
continue to be monitored. Main threat appears to be with small
streams and in urban areas, and the timing is concerning given
the Monday morning commute.
As the surface low scoots to the northeast near/west of the I-95
corridor during the morning, cold air aloft will move into the
area as the midlevel low approaches the region. Instability
showers (perhaps even with thunder) will likely develop upstream
of the convective line by afternoon, as depicted in most all of
the guidance. Maintained chances of this along/northwest of the
I-95 corridor in particular, given this area's closer proximity
to the midlevel vort max.
Temperatures will probably begin to fall during the afternoon as
colder air filters in upstream of the cold front. Used solely
hi-res guidance for temperatures during this period, as
precipitation effects, frontal placement, and potential for
rapidly changing sky conditions in the afternoon warrant little
use of statistically-derived guidance.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A deep, closed mid-level low will move from the Ohio Valley to
New England Monday night into Tuesday. The inflection point of the
flow moves across the region Wednesday morning, as a brief short
wave ridge moves in from the west. The next mid-level trough moves
toward the area on Thursday and closes off just to the north on
Friday. Ridging attempts to build into the area next weekend.
The main uncertainty is beyond Wednesday with the phasing of
northern and southern stream energy over the Great Lakes, and this
is evident in the ensemble mean and spread, leading to some
divergence in model solutions with respect to the timing and
track of the next system.
The main concerns are snow showers Monday night into Tuesday mainly
over the higher terrain, the potential for frost Tuesday Night,
and precipitation type (yes, precipitation type) over the higher
terrain and timing with the next system Thursday into Friday.
Temperature-wise, we're generally running near seasonal norms
Tuesday through Saturday.
Considerable cloudiness Monday Night into Tuesday. With the mid-
level low aloft, there will be abundant moisture, but lift will be
scant. As colder air works in while the precipitation is winding
down, there is some potential for snow to accumulate over the
higher terrain of Carbon, Monroe, and Sussex (NJ) Counties Monday
Night. Generally less than an inch of snow is possible, mainly
on grassy surfaces.
On Tuesday, while the column remains very moist and there is weak
lift, the colder air aloft pulls away as the maximum heating of the
day approaches. Convection would be confined to the low-levels
where lapse rates are steepest. This setup would favor scattered
rain showers, increasing with coverage from late morning into the
evening, with some wet snowflakes mixing in across the higher
terrain north of I-78. Given the clouds, temperatures ~10 degrees
below normal and westerly wind gusts up to around 25 mph, it will
certainly feel chilly.
For Tuesday night, if the cloudiness exits early enough and the
winds become light and variable, there is the potential for frost,
especially west of the Delaware Valley. The concern here is for
sensitive plants as we enter the growing season generally south of
a PA Turnpike to I-195 line.
With short wave ridging aloft, a fair weather Wednesday is still
in store.
Another complex storm system is on the horizon during the Thursday
and Friday period, which could present precipitation type issues
over the higher terrain, especially Thursday Night. There are three
camps of models with this system: the GFS/CMC take low pressure
through the St. Lawrence Valley (warm solution), the ECMWF/UKMET
develop a fast moving Nor'easter (cold solution) as low pressure
redevelops off the NJ coast, while the NAVGEM is in the middle.
Given the uncertainty regarding the aforementioned phasing, there
are track and timing uncertainties with this system, and we cannot
rule out any one solution at this time.
While the GFS solution would result in mainly rain across the
entire region, the ECMWF solution would introduce accumulating snow
across the higher terrain Thursday night, with the potential for
advisory level criteria at least on grassy surfaces. Given the
uncertainty and extended time frame, it's just too early to rule
out either scenario at this point.
A return to fair weather is expected for the first half of the
weekend.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
We continue to experience communications issues with KILG, so have
included AMD NOT SKED in the latest TAF.
This afternoon...Prolonged MVFR/IFR conditions with CIGs
500-1500 feet and patchy/transient sub-VFR VSBYs in
fog/drizzle/mist. Showers should move from south to north
through the area late this afternoon. Lightning strikes cannot
be ruled out, but the threat is too low for TAF inclusion. Winds
east-northeast 10 to 20 kts with gusts 25-35 kts. Moderate
confidence.
This evening...Conditions are expected to trend slowly to IFR
(or possibly LIFR) at all sites. Scattered showers will
continue (lightning possible but threat still too low for TAF
mention), with patchy fog/drizzle near/north of PHL. Winds
easterly 10 to 20 kts with higher gusts. Southeasterly LLWS
should develop late this evening and will likely affect all TAF
sites by 06Z. Low confidence (though the presence of LLWS is of
high confidence).
After midnight through Monday morning...A line of storms should
move through the area between 09Z and 14Z, with LIFR conditions,
torrential rain and erratic winds likely as the heaviest
portion of the line moves through. Lightning is likely
near/south of PHL but less probable to the north (where the
potential is too low for TAF mention at this point). South to
southeast LLWS will strengthen just in advance of the line,
potentially exceeding 55 kts near/southeast of KPHL. Conditions
are expected to improve slowly to MVFR after the storms pass.
Moderate confidence.
Monday afternoon...Improvement to VFR is likely, though
scattered showers may develop near/northwest of PHL. Winds
becoming southwest or west around 10 kts with gusts to 20 kts.
Potential for some erratic winds/gusts around showers. Moderate
confidence.
Outlook...
Monday Night...There is some potential for lingering MVFR ceilings,
mainly at ABE, RDG, and TTN. Elsewhere, VFR conditions. Westerly
wind gusts up to around 25 kts.
Moderate Confidence.
Tuesday...Predominantly VFR. Brief periods of MVFR ceilings,
especially in rain showers. Westerly wind gusts up to around 20 kts.
Moderate Confidence.
Tuesday Night and Wednesday...VFR conditions. Winds generally
around 10 kts or less.
Wednesday Night...Ceilings lowering to MVFR, then to IFR late.
Thursday...Ceilings gradually improving to MVFR, but IFR will
be possible in showers.

.MARINE...
Gale-force gusts have commenced on Delaware Bay and the southern
New Jersey coastal waters. Models continue to underplay this
event, generally 5+ kts below observed values everywhere. As a
result, have upgraded Delaware Bay and the southern New Jersey
coastal waters to a gale warning, with Delaware Bay lasting
through Monday morning and the southern NJ coastal waters
lasting through Monday afternoon. Small craft advisory
conditions are likely thereafter for a time. There may be a
brief lull in gusts late this afternoon and this evening, but
very strong winds are likely later tonight in advance of a line
of storms along a strong cold front moving through early Monday
morning.
Small craft advisory continues today for the Atlantic Delaware
coastal waters followed by a gale warning tonight and Monday,
with buoy 44009 noticeably lower with winds so far today. Not
expecting winds here to crank up until tonight, when the cold
front approaches the area. However, seas will build to near 10
feet through this evening, so conditions will be deteriorating.
For all waters...a line of showers and thunderstorms Monday morning
could bring sudden gusty winds and occasional lightning.
Outlook...
Tuesday...SCA. Westerly winds gusts around 25 kts with seas AOA 5 ft.
Tuesday Night and Wednesday...Sub-SCA conditions.
Wednesday Night and Thursday...With the approach of low pressure, at
least SCA-level winds and seas are expected.

The Coastal Flood Advisory for the northern NJ coast for this
morning has been cancelled. Water levels are now coming down
after this morning's high tide. A Coastal Flood Watch remains in
effect for the high tide tonight and again for Monday morning.
Previous Discussion...
A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for this morning's
high tide along the Northern New Jersey coast for minor
flooding. For the high tides this evening and Monday morning, a
Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for the Northern New Jersey
coast, when moderate flooding is possible.
Further south, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for the
remainder of the New Jersey coast, the Delaware coast, and all
of Delaware Bay, for the high tides this evening and Monday
Morning.
Increasing astronomical tides associated with the approaching
new moon in combination with a brisk onshore flow will be the
primary drivers of this event.
There is also the potential of minor flooding along the Delaware
River and upper Chesapeake Bay. For these locals, there is a
greater concern for the Monday morning high tide cycle, given an
increasing southeasterly flow regime between now and then.
