.SYNOPSIS...
A brief break is expected through this evening before low
pressure spreads wintry precipitation across the upper Ohio
Valley tonight through Wednesday, with impact to the morning
commute. High pressure builds overhead for the latter half of
the week, with some moderation in temperature for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Light snow will taper off shortly, with dry conditions expected
until precipitation with the next system starts to spread
northeastward. Some brief peeks of sun may be possible across
the northwest fringes of the forecast area, but otherwise expect
expanding high clouds with the next system to keep us mostly
cloudy. Little in the way of change was needed through this
evening based on the latest hi res model guidance and trends
until precipitation approaches overnight.

Storm system is expected to spread snow over the Ohio Valley
just before midnight. Minor adjustments to timing were made,
but no wholesale changes were made to precipitation types, as of
yet with new model guidance still coming in.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
WINTRY MIX WEDNESDAY WILL MAKE FOR DIFFICULT TRAVEL

All signs continue to point a winter mess overnight into
Wednesday for much of the region. Low pressure will track north
from the lower Mississippi Valley tonight and pass just on the
windward side of the Appalachians Wednesday.

Easterly winds this evening will back around to the north and
allow cold air to be reinforced at the surface with sub-freezing
temperatures at the onset. Right now, estimated timing for snow
to commence over northern West Virginia would be just after
midnight. One the recent changes was the lack of dry in the
column especially in the lowest 7KFT compared to the 12Z
operational models. As a result the initial surge of isentropic
upglide won't have to work as hard saturating the column and
allow for a earlier start to snow. Given a 90 degree angle made
with winds between 290-310K and pressure surfaces, snow will be
moderate to at times heavy at the beginning. Snowfall rates of
1" to 1.5" will be common until daybreak. This should yield us
reaching advisory level snowfall /3" or more/ across most of
the region by 7am.

The forecast becomes tricky afterward due to a warm layer aloft
which will bring the kitchen sink of winter ptypes to the
forecast area. Still confident with warm air surging and
changing ptype to all rain across northern West Virginia into
southwestern Pennsylvania early in the morning. By the time the
day is complete, afternoon highs in these locations will be in
the lower 40s! With a slight westward shift in the low pressure
track, freezing rain and sleet was shifted a little farther west
into eastern Ohio. Confidence is lowest across the Pittsburgh
metro region where eastern part of Allegheny county should
switch over to a rain/freezing rain/sleet combo during the mid
morning hours, while out in the western part it could stay
mostly snow. This could lead to a decent gradient of snowfall.

Overall, forecast did not change too much. Main adjustments
were to further increase the coverage of rain mixing in during
the daylight hours up to southern parts of Jefferson county
Pennsylvania. Snowfall amounts still are on track with a high
end advisory over sections north of Interstate 80.

As the baroclinic zone crosses during the late afternoon and
evening hours, any place that experiences a wintry mix will
switch back to snow as the column cools and the warm layer aloft
is shunted to the northeast. Accumulations this evening will be
light, there could be an inch or two in the higher terrain,
however with Lake Erie closed for business again, this added
moisture source will be removed.

High pressure builds in Thursday shutting off the upslope snow
showers in the mountains, but do not expect much in the way of
clearing with fast northwest flow aloft. The sky clears Thursday
night and with a fresh snowpack for a good part of the region,
we should bottom out in the lower to middle teens.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights:
- Southern stream takes over
- No Ptype concerns
- Warm weather this weekend

Zonal flow starts off the long term with residual effects from the
persistent cyclone across eastern Canada of late.  This will push a
a weak baroclinic zone through the forecast area Friday night into
Saturday morning.  Latest ensembles have the front not making it as
far south as previous runs with it reaching the I-76 then retreating
north as a warm front Saturday during the day.  There won't be a lot
of moisture to work with so any QPF will light  With thermal
profiles supportive of snow, this means less than an inch.

H5 heights build allowing southwest flow aloft due to strengthening
anticyclone in the western Atlantic.  Two weather systems will ride
up west of the Ohio river Saturday night and again Monday night.
PWATS get close to an inch Sunday afternoon while surface dewpoints
climb into the 40s.  Continue to carry likely pops for this period
as confidence remains above average.

The front pushes through Sunday night into Monday morning, however
do not expect a return of winter weather on the back side given
light flow from the west -southwest.  H8 temps drop back below zero
allowing min temperatures to fall back where they should be this
time of year.

High pressure pays a short visit Monday before the Gulf is back open
for business. Southwesterly flow brings another slug of deep
moisture and H8 temps pushing 10C Tuesday.  This system won't bring
as much rainfall since its not as organized as the previous.

With continuity amongst the long range solutions opted for the
Superblend for temperatures

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
MVFR stratocu will continue this afternoon/evening, before drier
air moves in from the west to help scatter it out. Any VFR
achievement will be short-lived, however, as a quick
deterioration is expected tonight with a strong low pressure
system moving in. Precipitation will generally start as snow and
then change over to a menagerie of precipitation types once the
warmer mid-level air moves in. MGW will quickly transition to
rain for much of Wednesday while northern ports of FKL/DUJ are
expected to remain snow. The other several terminals that
remaining between these will see snow change to rain/freezing
rain/sleet at somepoint. Intentionally kept p-types a little
vague to account for this. Widespread IFR cigs will be common
near dawn Wednesday and should persist through the day, with
some vis variation expected.

General west winds will vary this evening/night with the low
nearing. Finally, the winds will shift quickly to the west
during the day Wednesday as the cold front crosses the area.

.OUTLOOK...
Restrictions will be possible Friday and into the weekend as
the unsettled weather pattern continues.
