.SYNOPSIS...
Much colder and very windy today. Scattered rain and snow
showers are possible. No signs of spring with unsettled
conditions and below normal temperatures expected through the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
No changes to the ongoing forecast, as warm air aloft is
eradicated, there have been a few reports of sleet before the
transition to all snow. Weather grids account for snow all the
way to up 38 degrees before introducing a rain / snow mix. All
locations by 18Z will transition to snow as the dominant ptype.
Winds have peaked as around 9am. There is still another window
where thy can make another run at 50 mph with the secondary
trough axis which is working through. This trough axis will
spawn scattered snow showers especially down wind of lake Erie
and the higher terrain. For the latest wind reports, please
check the Public Information Statements from our office.
Lots of down tree reports which were expected due to the
saturated ground.
High pressure slowly builds in tonight, which will slacken the
pressure gradient and allow winds to decrease this evening. With
cyclonic flow and cold advection, stratocu will hang through
the overnight hours, however there will be break in the clouds.
Any snow showers will be confined in the higher terrain of West
Virginia and western Maryland in addition to north of I-80 due
to lake enhancement and terrain induced lift. With moisture
being shallow, not much in the way of snow accumulation is
predicted. Generally an inch or less in the aforementioned
locations.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Upper air disturbance crosses Thursday night which will bring a
mixture of rain and snow showers for locations south of US 422,
while points north low levels are supportive of all snow. Broad
warm advection coupled with weak 280-290K isentropic upglide
will yield scattered to numerous rain and wet snow showers
Friday. Any daytime accumulation will be an inch or less mainly
north of I-80.
The associated baroclinic zone crosses Friday night, so pops
were ramped up with its passage. Highest numbers are located in
the southeastern 1/3 of the forecast area. Any rain will be
switching over to snow as we head toward daybreak Saturday with
a drop in the H10-H8 thickness below critical thresholds.
Another light snow accumulation is possible as the cold arrives
before the precipitation exits.
The forecast is tricky Friday night as a wave of low pressure
provides a few different outcomes in this region. With the
cyclone projected to track east of the mountains, cold air would be
in place and support all snow over the mountains of southwest
Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and western Maryland. If
the operational GFS and NAM track pans out then several inches
of snow is possible in the aforementioned areas including
adjacent lower elevations. WPC experimental Days 4-7 winter
guidance suggest 30-50% probability of more than 0.25" of QPF
which in this case could be all snow. Confidence is high enough
/between 30-50%/ to include mention in the HWO for the higher
terrain regarding possible winter weather headlines later this
week. GFS and NAM support decent snow ratios for early April
with values 10:1-15:1 given thermal profile and location of
dendritic growth zone. Confidence is not high enough to include
in HWO for Morgantown to Greensburg to Indiana corridor as
boundary temperatures have to be resolved. Snow in April has
bust potential since they are predicated on surface temperatures
and time of day. The latter at this juncture is satisfied for
now. Ensemble means from GEFS and GEPS are still a tad farther
southeast with the cyclone track supporting uncertainty in the
forecast. Operational models picked up on the snow event this
past Monday morning, so weight toward operational run is higher
than normal given recent performance.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights:
- STILL looking but not finding Spring!
- No big storms
- Snow showers remain in the forecast
Trough remains over the eastern United States much of the
extended, so the below normal streak continues. The coldest day
of the next seven will be Sunday morning as high pressure over
the central Great Lakes will allow for enough clearing and winds
to diminish supporting morning temperatures in the upper teens
to mid 20s. This won't be close to any records since those
numbers stand in the lower to mid teens, nonetheless it will be
a cold morning. A dry sunday as the transitory surface
anticyclone passes across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
A weak warm front lifts through Monday morning, which could
bring a period of light snow over the north and rain points
south. Any snow will be light and not stick around long given
surge of warm air in the boundary layer. The associated cold
front and low pressure pass Tuesday afternoon. This will make
the second half of Monday into early Tuesday the warmest stretch
of the extended. H8 temps only climb to 2C in the warm sector
so its highly likely we won't even be able to muster 50F before
the cold front sweeps through.
Tuesday night into Wednesday when the main trough axis sweeps
through snow dynamics look good for a few inches of snow in the
higher terrain and perhaps adjacent lower elevations especially
since this would be during the night time hours. Plenty of time
to fine tune this over the next several days.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Wind gusts of 35 to 45 knots out of the west will continue to
be the main story through the afternoon as a trough axis moves
through a tight pressure gradient regime. The winds should start
to diminish around sunset, and many locations will lose the
wind gusts after midnight as the gradient relaxes.
Also, scattered to numerous snow showers will continue for a few
more hours, mainly north of Pittsburgh, as the trough swings
through. Brief IFR visibilities/MVFR ceilings are expected at
FKL and DUJ in this activity. Otherwise, generally VFR
conditions are forecast at other terminals, with some short
drops into MVFR possible but not generally coded up.
Snow showers will become more isolated after midnight, with VFR
conditions expected to dominate tomorrow morning and afternoon.
WSW wind, after dropping to around 10 knots overnight, may gust
up to 20 knots by midday tomorrow.
OUTLOOK...
Restrictions potential returns Thu night thru Sat with areas of
low pressure.
