A narrow band of low clouds and even some locally dense fog
developed this morning near a surface front from KSWO-KOKC-
KHBR-F05. This band of clouds and fog should dissipate gradually
this afternoon as the front washes out and southerly winds become
dominant across Oklahoma and north Texas. As a strong storm system
develops to our west, moisture will be drawn north into the
eastern 1/3 of Oklahoma this evening, then spread slowly west
early Thursday, bringing lower ceilings and even some light rain
at KPNC. At the same time, a strong cold front will bring strong
to very strong winds to all our TAF sites by noon Thursday, and
frequent wind gusts over 40 kt are likely across parts of western
Oklahoma...with somewhat less-strong winds elsewhere.

AVIATION...
Unrestricted ceilings and visibilities will continue through the
evening with ceiling restrictions possible toward the end of the
TAF period.

Northerly winds across northern and western Oklahoma are expected
to become southerly later this morning. Wind speeds should remain
relatively light.

Stratus may develop later tonight, especially across north
central and eastern Oklahoma. Some patchy drizzle may also occur,
but confidence is too low to include in TAFs. Stratus may move
into central Oklahoma as a cold front passes by toward the end of
the TAF period. Gusty, northerly winds are expected behind the
front.

DISCUSSION...
The primary forecast issue continues to be the potential impacts
from Thursday's system which include: 1) strong, northerly winds;
2) the chance of rain and/or snow; and 3) colder temperatures.

For today, another warm one is expected with high temperatures
ranging from the mid 50s to low 60s F. A wind shift that entered
northern Oklahoma will dissipate later this morning with a return
to southerly winds area wide.

For tonight into Thursday, a shortwave trough across the Rockies
is forecast to dig southeastward into the Southern Plains and
become a closed-off low as it moves into the Big County of Texas.
The attendant surface cyclone is forecast to move southeastward
along with a cold front.

As moisture advects northward tonight, some drizzle may develop--
especially across the east. Otherwise, ascent ahead of the wave
will result in development of rain in the warm sector late tonight
into Thursday.

The cold front will pass by much of area by Thursday morning.
Strong, northerly winds are expected behind this cold front with a
tight surface pressure gradient and attendant ~5 mb/3 hr surface
pressure rises. In addition, strong winds aloft (e.g., >60 knots
at 850 mb across the west) may mix to the surface. Based on BUFKIT
soundings, some wind gusts over 58 mph may occur across western
Oklahoma and adjacent parts of Texas due to a forecast mixed layer
to ~850 mb. A High Wind Watch remains in effect for this area.
Overall, sustained wind speeds of 25-35 mph are expected with wind
gusts 45-55+ mph.

Wrap-around precipitation is expected across the northern to
western side of the upper-level low with indications that a
deformation zone may develop. As the low passes by, the column
will cool appreciably with decreasing thicknesses. With the track
of the upper-level low trending south, the greatest risk for
accumulating snow will be across the Big Country of Texas and
adjacent parts of western north Texas, where precipitation rates
will be the highest (within the potential deformation zone) and
temperatures aloft will be coldest. The precipitation rates may be
heavy enough for accumulations in this area even if
wetbulb/surface temperatures are just above freezing.

One hazard with any heavier snowfall is the strong northerly
winds would result in reduced visibilities. Therefore, after
coordination with WFOs Fort Worth and San Angelo, opted to issue a
Winter Storm Watch for Clay and Archer counties where the
possibility of impacts will be greater; however, if the track
continues to shift southward, any significant impacts should move
southward as well. With such a high dependence on the exact
track/temperatures, there is a chance these areas may see no snow
accumulation with a slight shift or slightly warmer temperatures.

Farther north in Oklahoma, wet snow may mix with rain, but the
probability of accumulating snow appears to be lower with lower
precipitation rates, warmer temperatures aloft (e.g., the 12/00Z
GFS and ECMWF have 850 temperatures forecast to between -1.5 to
+1.5 C across central Oklahoma), and surface temperatures above
freezing. Opted to keep a "chance" near the Red River and "slight
chance" of snow farther north (including the OKC metro) to account
for some wet snow mixing in (with the predominant precipitation
type being rain). No accumulations are expected here. Either way,
with the colder temperatures and gusty winds, it will be blustery
day.

With the system closing off/slowing down, lingering precipitation
and cloud cover will be possible on Friday. This will result in a
cool day with forecast high temperatures in the mid 40s to low
50s F.

Warmer weather (highs in the mid 50s to near 60 F) is expected
for the upcoming weekend with dry conditions. The quiet and mild
weather is expected to continue through the end of the forecast
period.
