.SYNOPSIS...
A vigorous low pressure system will bring rain and snow to the
Idaho Panhandle and the Cascades today into Monday. Gusty west
winds will also accompany this storm this afternoon into Monday.
Periodic wet, windy weather will be possible Wednesday through
next Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Monday night...A cold and unstable upper low
circulation is apparent near the Queen Charlotte Islands this
morning on the satellite loop. This feature will drive the area
weather as it approaches and passes during the next 24 to 36
hours. Overall, models are in good agreement featuring a moderate
fetch of Pacific moisture feeding into the region as the upper low
approaches today...which will promote an increasing area of valley
rain showers and mountain snow showers this afternoon
concentrated over the Idaho Panhandle and eastern basin...as well
as slopping over the Cascade crest from the west side upslope
regime. The deep basin will probably be largely skipped by this
system with mainly dry but breezy conditions leading to the
potential for localized blowing dust near freshly worked fields.

This system will be quite dynamic as it transits the region
tonight with surface low development over the east this
evening...favorable orographic upslope flow into the Panhandle
high terrain and unstable lapse rates in the cold core of the
upper low. This leads to the likelihood of a round of late season
snow especially for the mountains where up to a foot of
accumulation is possible on the higher peaks and probably at least
moderate amounts of accumulation in the valleys of the Idaho
panhandle and Camas Prairie and possibly the Blue Mountains. At
this time the Panhandle mountains are the most confident bet for
travel impacts tonight and into Monday morning...and a Winter
Weather Advisory will be issued with this morning's package for
travel across Lookout Pass tonight. Even the rising terrain of the
eastern basin may pick up a dusting to locally an inch of snow
accumulation overnight tonight especially on the Palouse where the
moisture feed will linger longest before passing to the east.

On Monday the upper low will move off to the east...but in it's
wake westerly flow will continue to promote upslope snow showers
driving into the Panhandle mountains but after sunrise road
surface temperatures will rise above freezing and limit further
accumulations. Monday will be a somewhat raw and breezy day over
most of the region with cooler than normal temperatures and
gradual tapering off of shower activity from west to east during
the day...with lingering showers overnight into Tuesday morning
limited to the high terrain of the Idaho panhandle. /Fugazzi

Tuesday: Tuesday will be the last dry day before a string of wet
and windy systems impact the region. Temperatures will start off
in the 20s to low 30s warming into the 40s to 50s by the afternoon
under a mix of sun and clouds.

Tuesday night and Wednesday: We will transition from northwest to west or
zonal flow allowing an influx of Pacific moisture and increasing
risk for light precipitation. Models trends have been toward a
wetter Wednesday with a slight increase in QPF amounts over the
lower Idaho Panhandle. Snow levels will start off between
2000-3000 feet Tuesday night...rising toward 4000-5000 Wednesday
afternoon. Consequently, light snow will be possible on the
mountain passes early Wednesday morning with little to no impacts
expected by midday. Temperatures will not be as cold Tuesday night
due to the expansive cloud deck and Wednesday afternoon will be
another cool one with highs only climbing back into the upper 40s
and 50s.

Thursday through Sunday: Confidence is moderate to high for several
rounds of precipitation during this time-frame. All model
guidance supports an axis of subtropical moisture nosing toward
the Northwestern US and interacting with at least two organized
frontal systems. However, models continue to show differences with
the exact timing of each frontal system, especially going into
the Friday-Saturday time-frame. If you remove these timing
differences and look at the run accumulated QPF, there is decent
agreement that NE WA and N ID will receive between 0.50 - 1.50"
over a 36-48 hour period with locally higher amounts possible in
the Central Panhandle Mtns. Similar charts indicate over an inch
of QPF along the Cascade Crest and less than half an inch in the
Deep Basin and lee of the Cascades. Precipitation will largely
fall as rain below 5000 feet. While this is spread out over the
course of two to three days, it does raise some hydrology
concerns. Mid and high mountain snow pack around 4000 feet and
higher will have the ability to soak up the moisture with nearly
all SNOTEL sites indicating snow ripeness or the ratio of SWE to
Snow Depth ranging between .3 to .4 and locally near .2 in
Northern Shoshone County. A rule of thumb is to achieve ripeness
ratios around .5 or higher before precipitation will pass through
the snowpack. So at this time, thinking the main threats for
hydrology will be increase flows in creeks and streams and some
added field flooding in already saturated flood plains as well as
rock slides in areas of steep terrain. May have some localized
issues around Priest Lake where there remains a decent amount of
snow on the ground in the lower elevations. Otherwise, river
models continue to suggest no main stem river flooding through the
weekend at this time. /sb

.AVIATION...
06Z TAFS: A vigorous low pressure system will be dropping down
along the BC coastline late tonight into Sunday. Clouds will
increase overnight thicken up during the day. Showers are
expected by the afternoon mainly across extreme eastern WA and
into the ID Panhandle. Pre-frontal winds will be gusty in the
afternoon with gusts between 20-30 kts. Cold front passage will be
in the evening with higher gusts up to around 35 kts possible.
MVFR to IFR conditions will be possible with precip in the evening
in the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene corridor and at KPUW; rain may also
change over to snow for these areas briefly with cold front

weekend over the area.
