A big weather change is expected today into Friday which will
produce heavy snow accumulations over portions of north central
Washington with periods of rain and snow for the Panhandle and
eastern third of Washington. Snow showers expected through the
weekend.

Today through Thursday....Satellite indicates a strong and deep
Gulf of Alaska trough digging aggressively just off the British
Columbia coast...pushing a wave of moisture ahead of it
manifesting itself as a baroclinic leaf cloud moving into
Vancouver Isle this morning. Models are in pretty good agreement
with the overall field of motion. This trough will become a deep
closed low planting itself just off the northwest US coast by
tomorrow and gradually ejecting inland late this week. This sets
up a long run period of moist southerly flow into the forecast
area...with general deterioration beginning today over the western
zones and really getting going over the rest of the region
tonight. Strong moist isentropic ascent over a warm front coupled
with dynamic support under cyclonic divergence aloft will promote
an extended period of precipitation over the forecast area.
Precipitation type is easy for the mountains above 3000 feet or so...
snow...and a lot of it from the Cascades through the Okanogan
Highlands and the northeast mountains of Washington. The mountains
of north Idaho near the Canadian border will also get
clobbered...but the Central Panhandle Mountains look to benefit
from a reverse downslope regime of low and mid level winds
feeding into the offshore low pressure limiting snow amounts to
relatively moderate accumulations. These same easterly winds will
aggravate upslope flow into the Cascades.
The valleys of these mountain zones present a challenge. Some
deeper and more protected valleys such as the Methow and the
Sanpoil/Republic area will confidently start as snow and stay
snow through the event...while more southern valleys such as the
Wenatchee River valley will see some warmer air creep in as the
warm front slips northward with relatively minor accumulations at
Leavenworth with a better chance of heavy accumulations in the
upper valley. The Okanogan Valley...Colville...lake Roosevelt and
Pend O'rielle Valleys will have a different dynamic at
work...mainly the longer days and climatology will increase
daytime temps enough to limit accumulations or even allow a mix of
rain during the afternoon and early evening...while the pure snow
returns and accumulates during the overnight and early morning
hours. The north Idaho Valleys...particularly the Purcell Trench
will be on the edge of the heavy precipitation shield and also
subject to the diurnal fluctuation...with moderate accumulations
looking most likely.
The Columbia Basin is the next challenge. The lower elevations
from the L-C Valley to Wenatchee and Moses Lake should be
primarily rain during the day and a non-accumulating mix at night.
The higher terrain...the Highway 2 corridor...the Spokane/CDA area
and particularly the Waterville Plateau will be subject to
accumulating snow tonight and into Thursday morning. The
Waterville Plateau in the cold air dammed region will suffer the
heaviest amounts...while the Spokane and CDA area will receive
varying amounts highly dependent on elevations of a few hundred
feet difference.
This regime with the varying terrain mandates a patchwork of
complex winter weather highlights...which will replace the
existing Winter Storm Watch with the morning forecast issuance.
This is a very fluid situation fraught with uncertainties
particularly regarding precipitation type and snow amount
potential in the valley locations. A general rule of thumb for
this time of year is rain/snow or minor accumulating wet slushy snow
by day...and drier accumulating snow by night. /Fugazzi
Thursday night through Tuesday: A broad upper trough envelopes
the Pacific Northwest early this period, with unsettled weather,
before it starts to stretch and move through early next week
allowing for comparatively drier conditions. Temperatures will
remain below normal. Thursday night and Friday a robust shortwave
disturbance rounding the trough will provide modest precipitation
chances throughout the region. This will include a mixture of rain
and snow in the valley/basin areas and snow in the mountains,
some of which may be moderate. The robust shortwave exits Friday
night, but a deformation axis and weaker shortwave entangled in
the upper trough through the weekend will keep some precipitation
threat alive. Through Saturday night the best will retreat to the
mountains and amounts look relatively light. A slightly stronger
wave pivoting by Sunday will expand the threat again but amounts
look relatively light. Monday and Tuesday the broader trough exits
and ridge builds in as another trough approach the coast. Some
guidance does bring another shortwave by that could bring passing
precipitation chances outside of the mountains, but for the most
part the risk will retreat to the mountains where the

06Z TAFS: Snow showers will continue over the ID Panhandle
tonight into Wednesday morning. Snow showers will impact the KCOE
TAF site, but accumulations will mainly occur east over the higher
terrain. Expect MVFR cigs across the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene
corridor through Wednesday morning. A 990 mb surface low will drop
down off of the BC coast on Wednesday. A warm front will swing up
in the region with precip chances increasing in the afternoon.
Heaviest precip will be in the Okanogan Highlands to the lee
slopes of the Cascades. An easterly gradient will result in
downsloping off of the higher terrain of the ID Panhandle and
limit the precip that falls into KGEG, KSFF and KCOE. This
downsloping is expected to keep KPUW and KLWS dry with VFR
conditions. KMWH will see rain by late afternoon with a mix of
rain and snow and MVFR/IFR conditions at KEAT. /SVH
