late Tuesday night into Wednesday has the potential to bring heavy
snow accumulations to the eastern third of Washington, and north
Idaho. Another round of mountain snow is possible Friday into
Saturday. Valley snow showers will again be possible late Saturday
into Sunday. Dry and cold air arrives Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Wednesday Night:
High clouds will continue to move into the region ahead of the
next weather system. With filtered sunshine today it will be a
slow climb out of the teen and 20s morning temperatures and
fortunately light winds will keep low wind chill at bay. High
temperatures in the 30s will be common today except farther south
on the Palouse and Lewiston/Clarkston valley where warmer
temperatures in the lower 40s are expected.
...Heavy snow accumulations possible for Eastern Washington and
Idaho Panhandle Tuesday night into Wednesday morning...
The next weather system now starting its southeast trek from the
Gulf of Alaska is where the next significant snow will arrive
from. While there are some subtle differences in recent forecast
guidance general consensus is that late evening in north central
Washington snow will start moving in from the northwest. Snow will
quickly spread southeast overnight Tuesday impacting the eastern
third of Washington and Idaho Panhandle into Wednesday morning.
The rain/snow line is a little difficult to determine near the
Washington/Oregon border early Wednesday morning so areas such as
Lewiston and points west toward the southern central Basin may be
more rain and snow mixed.
The commute looks to be potentially very messy Wednesday morning
as moderate to locally heavy snow forecast to quickly accumulate
3 to 6 inches over a widespread area in the eastern third of
Washington and Idaho Panhandle. Snowfall rates will be enhanced
along and behind the front as lapse rates steepen and evidence of
a small scale circulation and up slope flow into the Palouse and
southern Spokane counties enhancing localized heavier snow
accumulations to possibly 7 to 11 inches especially in the
mountains.
Winter Storm Watches are in effect for this significant snow
potential. There looks to be some fine tuning needed with
additional advisories and warnings to be issued later this morning
or early afternoon for the overnight storm.

The remainder of the storm Wednesday night will slowly weaken in
the Idaho Panhandle continuing snow showers over the central and
southern Idaho Panhandle mountains as well as the Camas Prairie.

Thursday through Monday: Ridge off the coast and general inland
trof allows for a northwest to southeast oriented path for winter
weather disturbances to take and pass over Eastern Washington and
North Idaho. The forecast area appears between storm systems
Thursday so pops remain minimal for snow showers and limited to
parts of North Idaho. Another weather system dropping down in the
flow Friday gets some of its moisture feed diverted just as its
making progress through the forecast area and as such snow amounts
are lower in comparison to those brought about by Wednesday's
system. A stronger system dropping down in this flow Saturday
shares some similarity to the strength and intensity of
Wednesday's storm and allows for not only a robust increase in
pops and QPF. A cold conditionally unstable airmass with steep
850-700mb lapse rate and associated lowering of the tropopause
down to about the 400mb level may allow for some convective snow
showers as the temperatures take a drop Sunday. This cooling trend
continues as the offshore ridge is expected to be pushed further
west and away from the coast which will allow for a colder
continental trajectory of approach for airmasses to move over
Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho with a corresponding drop in
pops and sky cover as skies are likely to show considerable
clearing with this colder and more continental northerly flow.

strong frontal boundary will bring a burst of moderate to heavy
snowfall east of KMWH with KMWH expected to be the western edge of
