.SYNOPSIS...
Today will be hot and hazy with many communities across the Inland
Northwest reaching triple digits. Breezy conditions will develop
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday as temperatures gradually
decrease. Cooler than average temperatures are expected this
weekend and into next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Wednesday: One more day of hot temperatures as the
ridge axis moves into north Idaho. Some high cirrus is moving
across the region this morning and will move out of north ID by
late this afternoon. The thicker cirrus will be south towards the
Blue Mountains...Lewiston...and Camas Prairie regions. This in
addition to the hazy skies may keep take a degree or two off
potential high temps today. Heat advisories and warnings are still
warranted and will keep them going until 8pm tonight. Models
still show some borderline moisture with instability this
afternoon along the spine of the Cascades. Have kept a slight
chance of thunderstorms through the evening. There is also a small
threat of thunder down in the Blues/Camas Prairie region late
this afternoon and possibly through the night for the Camas
Prairie.
As the ridge slips east a cold front will approach the Cascades
this evening. Winds generally won't start to increase through the
gaps (Wenatchee area northward) until after 8pm...when humidities
will be on the increase. Winds will continue through the night as
the cold front moves over the crest and into eastern WA Wednesday
morning. Winds will increase most locations on Wednesday as the
cold front moves across. Speeds will generally be under 15 mph.
The area of concern for possible additional fire weather
highlights will be across the east slopes of the Cascades where
they will see stronger winds in addition to the very low relative
humidity values. The cold front is not expected to bring any
precipitation to the region, but will bring slightly cooler
temperatures on Wednesday. Of course, you have to deal with the
winds to get the cooler temperatures. /Nisbet
Thursday and Friday: Our gradual cooling trend will continue into
Thu and Fri. Sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph will be common as
cooler maritime air spills through the Cascade gaps over the
period of 2 to 3 days. Our typically windy spots like Wenatchee,
Chelan, Vantage, and Waterville will likely experience late day
gusts of 25 to 30 mph Thu and Fri. The wind and low humidity will
heighten our wildfire risk and increase the spread of ongoing
fires. However, the air mass exchange will be relatively gradual
which is about the best we can hope for after our recent "heat
wave". At this time, it looks like winds will remain well below
Advisory criteria with no big lightning episode. There will be a
slight chance of showers and thunderstorms along the Canadian
border on Thursday afternoon/evening, but lightning does not
appear to be widespread. By Friday, high temperatures should be
down into the upper 70s for Sandpoint, Kellogg, Pullman, and
Republic with low to mid 80s for Spokane, Moses Lake, Wenatchee,
and Omak.
Saturday and Sunday: The GFS, ECMWF, and Canadian models forecast
a continuation of onshore flow through the weekend, but the Polar
Jet is expected to become more diffuse. If this pans out, there
should be a decrease in our winds for the weekend and temperatures
should remain below average. An unseasonably deep 500mb trough is
forecast by the medium range models late Sunday. At this time, it
looks like a good chance of rain for Western Washington Sunday
night. The northern and central Cascades may even have a shot of
rain showers Sunday night. Keep your fingers crossed as the
wildfires in the Cascades could really benefit from rain as well
as the cooler temps and higher humidity.
Monday and Tuesday: The medium range models are forecasting a big
pattern change next week beginning Sunday night into Monday. A
large Gulf of Alaska trough is expected to dig into the Pacific
Northwest leading to several days of cooler than average
temperatures. Several days of showers for western Washington looks
like a good bet. The mountains of north Idaho and eastern/central
Washington may also benefit from a cooler and showery regime.
This upcoming pattern could give firefighters a chance to get a
leg up on wildfires in our area. /GKoch

12Z TAFS: High pressure will provide VFR conditions, with
periodic middle to high clouds moving across this morning and
exiting to the east this aftn. There will be a limited threat of
thunderstorms along the Cascade crest aft 21Z and south of KLWS
after 00Z. Smoke or haze from regional wildfires will continue,
but surface visibilities will generally remain at 7 miles or more.
Winds will increase aft 03Z as a cold front moves into central
WA. Cascade gap winds will remain elevated through the night and
all of Wed.
