The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 6, 2:40 PM EST, 53 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
240 PM EST Tue Feb 6 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure trough passes through this afternoon. High
pressure follows this evening and moves quickly to the
northeast tonight as low pressure approaches. The low moves
through the region Wednesday into Wednesday night. High pressure
will build over the Mid- Atlantic on Thursday, and offshore on
Friday. Low pressure will impact the Tri-State Region over the
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Snow showers have passed through eastern Long Island and are
now offshore.

A surface trough moves across the area this afternoon, followed
by high pressure and clearing skies. Highs will top out in the
mid and upper 30s.

The flow will remain progressive as the large scale trough
remains and another shortwave quickly move out of the Rockies
this afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The shortwave moving out of the Rockies and rotating into the
trough will affect the area late tonight through Wednesday
night. High pressure moves off and low and mid level cold air is
replaced as warm advection sets up ahead of the surface and
midlevel low. Tracks of the GFS and ECMWF remain similar with
the surface low passing across the area and into coast New
England Wednesday and Wednesday night. Thermal profiles of the
GFS and ECMWF support snow and sleet transitioning to all rain
along the coast initially and moving inland through Wednesday
into Wednesday evening. The NAM remains a little farther inland
and warmer. If this scenario occurs much less snow will be
likely even well inland. As such QPF was lowered slightly and
warning level snows are more marginal where a winter storm watch
remains in effect, western Passaic, Orange and Putnam counties.
With the uncertainty and still some time to resolve evolution
of the storm will keep the watch as is. Advisory snow and a
light freezing rain will be possible just to the south, across
eastern Passaic northeast into Rockland, and into North New
Haven counties. Again will not issue any advisories at this
time.

With the quick flow, now a little quicker to end precipitation
late Wednesday night.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Blustery and cold on Thu as a 1030s high builds into the DC
area. The pres grad will keep nw winds going thru the day,
although speeds should decrease in the aftn. The polar front
will settle invof the cwa Fri into early Sat. This will allow
for light snow chances as embedded waves with additional
moisture pass thru the area. Should the polar front settle
further n, pops will needed to be lowered or eliminated
altogether. The 00z model suite is now suggesting a more benign
sys over the weekend as the srn and nrn streams fail to phase.
No changes were made attm, with a high amount of uncertainty
with regard to the evolution of the sys. Both the GFS and ECMWF
keep the cwa dry on Mon as high pres builds in, so the fcst was
adjusted accordingly.

&&

.AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

***High impact winter wx and compression/LLWS event on
 Wednesday***

High pressure will move across tonight, then retreat to the
northeast on Wed as low pressure approaches from the
Appalachians and a warm front approaches from the south.

VFR through tonight with generally light winds. Snow with IFR
conds should move in after 12Z-13Z Wed, then begin to
transition to sleet/freezing rain at the NYC metros and
KHPN/KBDR after about 15Z-16Z. The transition should occur more
quickly at KJFK/KISP, with rain expected by 16Z, but is unlikely
to occur at KLGA/KEWR/KTEB/KHPN/KBDR until either the very end
of the TAF period or just beyond.

Total snow/ice accumulations for most terminals through 18Z Wed
listed below. In addition, KBDR could see 1-2 inches of snow
before the change to freezing rain, and KGON up to an inch of
snow. KSWF could see 3-4 inches of snow by 18Z.

.OUTLOOK FOR 18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...

.Wednesday afternoon...LLWS developing, with S-SW winds
increasing to 45-55 kt at FL015-020. Warm fropa possible
toward evening along the coast with S sfc winds 15-20G25kt. IFR
with rain continuing at KJFK/KISP, and freezing rain changing
to rain most elsewhere. KSWF should see snow changing to sleet
and then freezing rain, with another inch of snow/sleet
accumulation and up to 1/10 inch ice accumulation.

.Wednesday night...Cold fropa during the evening. Rain ending
and NW winds G20KT.

.Thursday...VFR. NW winds G20KT.

.MARINE...
Light winds and seas below 5 feet remain on the forecast
waters early this morning. No changes at this time.

Winds and seas will remain below small craft advisory levels
today and tonight with a weak pressure gradient force across the
waters as low pressure passes to the north this morning and
high pressure builds back into the waters.

A low pressure system approaches from the southwest tonight and
affects the waters Wednesday and Wednesday night. Ocean winds
and seas will be at small craft levels around midday Wednesday
ahead of the low and remain into at least Wednesday night as
west and northwest winds develop as the low passes to the
northeast of the waters by 12Z Thursday. Another SCA has been
posted on the ocean from 18Z Wed to 11Z Thu.

A sca will be needed on Thu for all waters except perhaps the
wrn Sound and Harbor, then winds and seas decrease Thu ngt.
Winds and seas look to stay blw sca lvls Fri and Sat, then low
pres could produce sca cond Sun.

&&

.HYDROLOGY... pressure will move across tonight, then retreat to the
nortLiquid equivalent precipitation late Tuesday night through
Wednesday night is expected to range from 3/4 northwest to
around 1 inch at the coast. Some locally higher amounts will be
possible, especially across Long Island and Southern CT.
