Winds will continue to gradually diminish as temperatures rise 
with the onset of daytime heating. Wind chill values will remain 
below zero the next few hours, but no longer will meet advisory 
level criteria. However, it is still necessary to dress warmly

.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful storm system off the Carolina coast will rapidly
intensify as it track southeast of the region this afternoon.
This storm will move into the Canadian Maritimes by tonight.
Bitterly cold air will arrive in the wake of this system and
last through the weekend. A warm front will bring a chance for
precipitation, as well as milder temperatures, for the beginning
of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Updated to include the lower Hudson Valley in the Winter Storm
Warning. Reports of 2-3"/hr rates have been recorded with the
initial band, now rotating through NYC/southwest Connecticut
into the Lower Hudson Valley and northern NJ. See the Public
Information Statement issued at 1146 am for latest snowfall
totals across the area.

Additional banding now occurring on the northwestern periphery
of the upper low, with satellite imagery showing cooling tops
and an overall convective appearance across areas mainly to the
east of the NYC metro. Additional thundersnow is certainly
possible, which could locally enhance snowfall rates. Based on
earlier reports, the anticipation of additional snow, and higher
snow ratios than previously expected, have bumped up expected
snow amounts for the area...with 12-18" generally in the
blizzard warning in eastern Connecticut and Long Island, and
4-8" to the west of the NYC metro.

Equally as impressive are the wind gusts noted across the area,
which will continue at least into the evening. VAD wind profile
data here at OKX shows 50-55kt just above the surface, which is
readily mixing to the surface. As snow tapers from west to east
late this afternoon-evening, there may be a brief 2-3 hour
window of frequent gusts over 50 mph as deeper mixing begins to
occur. As such, potential for power outages and downed trees
will continue even after the snow ends.

Latest SPC mesoanalysis shows pressure falls ranging from 3-7 mb
in a 2 hour period in response to anomalously strong, coupled
upper jets that continue to lead to rapid deepening of the
surface low offshore. Overall, based on visible imagery
location of the surface low, model forecasts of the low
placement seem reasonable at this point. Expect the low to
continue a somewhat NNE track based on pressure falls at this
time.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Snow banding over E/LI and SE CT will taper off this evening,
with little additional accumulation expected before ending
before midnight.

Main story is that temps will plummet as cold air advects in as
the storm pulls into the Canadian Maritimes and deepens. Wind
chills as low as -10 to -15 are expected by Friday morning, with
these wind chills likely holding through the day with strong NW
winds and highs in the single digits to lower teens.

Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph likely on Friday with strong caa and
tight gradient between departing low and high pressure building
in from the west. Record low maximums are a possibility in some
areas.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A frigid airmass will settle into the area this weekend.
Northwest winds Friday night will minimize radiational cooling,
but this will be offset by the wind chill. At this time,
advisory level wind chills look to be confined to the interior.
A blend of the guidance and raw model data was used for weekend
temperatures. A wind chill advisory will likely be needed
Saturday night across the interior. The GFS and ECMWF produce
some light snow over eastern Connecticut and Long Island. This
looks to be a grid scale issue with the ocean effect most likely
not backbuilding to the coast. The forecast has been kept dry.

Return flow and the development of a warm front occur Monday. There
is some uncertainty with regard to the magnitude and depth of the
warming. This will impact precipitation type. For now, a mix of
light rain and snow has been forecast. A shot of some moderate snow
or a mix is possible Monday night into Tuesday as a clipper moves
through. Although the exact timing of this feature is subject to
change as it is several days away, model agreement is high at this
point so likely probabilities have been included in the forecast.
Temperatures then drop again on Wednesday behind the system.

**High Impact Winter Storm today**

Rapidly deepening low pressure continues to pass east of the
area today, then tracks toward the Canadian Maritimes tonight.

Conditions expected to remain at or below LIFR through 20z as
periods of moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow continues.
Snowfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour are expected in any of
the heavier snow bands.

Storm total snow forecast:

KJFK: 8-12
KLGA: 7-10
KEWR: 6-10
KTEB: 6-10
KHPN: 6-10
KISP: 10-16
KBDR: 8-12
KSWF: 5-8
KGON: 10-16

Snowfall rates and amounts subject to change based on the exact
locations of any heavier snow bands.

By late afternoon or evening, VFR returns as snow ends. Best
thinking right now is MVFR returns around 21z or so, and VFR
around 00z. (timing may be off by an hour or two).

Gusty north winds continue to have a major impact on the area terminals
especially through the early evening, as the storm deepens and
tracks the nearest to the terminals at that time. There is the
potential for occasional gusts up to 45 kt. North winds back to
the NW as the day progresses. Winds continue to gust 30-40kt
through much of the TAF period.

With strong winds, snow may blow back onto the runways through
the day Friday.

Winds are storm force across the ocean waters to strong gale
elsewhere as a powerful coastal storm passes east of the waters.
Winds expected to fall below storm by this evening as low
pressure moves to the north-northeast, but tight enough
gradient and caa for gales to continue across the waters through
Friday. Light to moderate freezing spray will likely become an
issue late tonight through Friday.

Gales Friday night will subside to Small Craft Advisory levels on
Saturday. Freezing spray can be expected on the Long Island Sound
and ocean Friday night, and then on the ocean Saturday. All waters
improve to below Small Craft Advisory levels on Sunday, then
increasing westerly flow will produce Small Craft Advisory
conditions on the ocean on Monday.

No significant hydrologic impacts are expected through the week
at this time.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A Coastal Flood Advisory continues issued for the morning high
tide, with minor to locally moderate flooding along W LI Sound,
Southern and Eastern bays of LI/NYC and lower NY/NJ harbor.

Tidal departures of 3/4 to 1 1/2 ft are needed for minor coastal
impacts in vulnerable areas.

Northerly winds should keep water levels shy of higher end of
range. Main impact will likely be north facing shorelines, with
combined wave action and elevated water levels. Particular
concern is along the north shore of the barrier islands and
north shore of south fork of LI where wave action and ice
chunks could cause isolated damage to water front structures.
