Area forecast discussion, May 9, 2:14 AM EDT, 1 hour 16 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
214 AM EDT Wed May 9 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain over the area through Wednesday
night. A cold front approaches Thursday and moves across the
region late Thursday night. High pressure from the Great Lakes
builds in Friday and then moves offshore Friday night. A frontal
system will approach from the Tennessee Valley for next
weekend. Its warm front will move in for the first half of the
weekend with its cold front moving across for the second half of
the weekend. Broad area of high pressure develops over the
region for early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Forecast is on track. Current coverage of any dense fog is still
patchy, so will continue the Special Weather Statement that is
currently in effect. Will continue to monitor dense fog. If one
is issued, most likely areas would be the Twin Forks of Long
Island and coastal New London in Connecticut.
Satellite fog product continues to show the stratus and fog
moving across the twin forks of Long Island and moving westward
down the Long Island Sound. The uncertainty is whether or not
the fog will become dense. Local areas have already fallen to
around 1/4 mile, and a special weather statement was issued for
eastern Long Island, and southern New London county. And at this
time still keeping the fog and stratus out of NYC until very
late tonight.
High pressure remains over the region tonight, with mostly
clear skies and light winds.
No major changes to the temperatures, and dew points were
adjusted upward a few degrees as the lower levels remain moist
with the stratus and fog moving in, especially along the coast.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Any early morning fog on land should quickly dissipate shortly
after sunrise, giving way to mostly clear skies again. There is
a possibility of some mid-upper level clouds associated with an
area of low pressure passing well to the southeast, but overall
no precipitation is expected. Temperatures across the interior
should be a few degrees warmer on Wednesday than what was
observed today. Highs will climb into the 70s across the
interior, with 60s closer to the coast.
Dry weather continues Wednesday night as the region remains under
high pressure. It should remain mostly clear, except across far
eastern sections where cloud cover from an area of low pressure
offshore. Lows Wednesday night fall into the 40s and 50s.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A mild weather pattern will remain with temperatures still
averaging a few degrees above normal late this week through
early next week. A few rounds of rain showers are forecast. One
with the cold front Thursday into Thursday night with a chance
of thunderstorms for the afternoon into early evening. Rain
showers are forecast for the weekend as well with a low pressure
system and associated frontal boundaries within the region.
Another chance of thunderstorms for Saturday afternoon into
Saturday evening. There is a slight chance for showers early
next week with a slight chance for thunderstorms next Tuesday
afternoon.
The main upper level jet will stay mainly north of the region
through the long term period.
In the mid levels, a trough passage Thursday night will be
followed by nearly zonal flow through the first half of the
weekend. Then some slight decrease in heights is expected with a
longwave trough moving southward into New England for Sunday
into Sunday night. The height gradient becomes less tight into
early next week with a NW flow becoming more zonal.
At the surface, the cold front will be approaching Thursday and
then moving across Thursday night. High pressure from the Great
Lakes build in Friday and then offshore Friday night. Another
low pressure system with its warm front approaches for Saturday,
moving into the region Saturday night. Then the associated cold
front moves from north to south across the region Sunday. Broad
high pressure reestablishes itself for early next week. The
high will be of weak magnitude though.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Largely a persistence type of forecast the next 24 hours with
high pressure anchored along the New England coast.
Fog/stratus bank with IFR to VLIFR conds continues to advance
west. It's possible that it does not KEWR/KTEB, and possibly
even KLGA as well, but it still looks likely that KJFK will see
lowering flight categories from this starting around 08z.
Wherever stratus/fog reaches, conds improve back to VFR anywhere
from 11-14z for most of the affected terminals. Stratus will
probably return to the same terminals tonight and arrive a
couple hours earlier this time around.
Light and variable winds pick up from the SE up to around 10 kt
by late morning, then becomes light and variable again tonight.
.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Wednesday night...IFR in stratus/fog probable.
.Thursday...Mainly VFR. Sct showers/tstms possible in the
afternoon from NYC metro west.
.Thursday night...Sct showers with MVFR conditions possible.
.Friday...VFR. NW winds G20kt early.
.Saturday and Sunday...Chance of MVFR in showers.
&&
.MARINE...
Dense fog has made its way into the Great South Bay, so added
a Dense Fog Advisory for the south shore bays with this update.
Otherwise, forecast is on track.
Main headline on the marine this evening and overnight will the
fog/stratus bank just offshore. This fog bank continues to
expand westward. So, will have a dense fog advisory up for all
the ocean waters as well as the eastern sound and Peconic and
Gardiners bays tonight.
Otherwise, sub-sca conditions remain on the waters through
Wednesday. Seas may rise back to 5 ft Wednesday night as low
pressure passes near the area. With seas being marginal, will
hold off on SCA headlines for now.
SCA will be possible mainly due to higher ocean seas Thursday
through Friday with another chance for SCA for Saturday night
through Sunday on the ocean.
