The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Apr 13, 2:21 PM EDT, 1 hour 13 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Apr 13, 2:21 PM EDT, 1 hour 13 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
221 PM EDT Fri Apr 13 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
A frontal boundary will remain nearly stationary to our north
through Saturday morning. The front gradually drops south
through the area on Saturday as strong high pressure over
eastern Canada builds into New England. A strong low pressure
system will impact the region from Sunday into Monday night. The
low will be north of the region on Tuesday. Another frontal
system will move through Wednesday night and Thursday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Temperatures have warmed significantly over the last few hours
as clouds have thinned out across all locations except eastern
Long Island and southeast Connecticut. A sprinkle or brief
shower remains possible there until 18z, before mostly sunny
skies should prevail.
We will likely see the warmest temperatures for 2018 this
afternoon. Newark, NJ is already at 77 degrees and even across
western Long Island temperatures are near 70. February 21 was
the last time we have seen temperatures this warm and that is
for mainly urban NE NJ, interior CT, Lower Hudson Valley, and
NYC metro. Long Island was held in the lower 60s that day.
Highs today will reach the upper 70s from the NYC metro area
north/west and 80-82 in urban NE NJ, with upper 60s across most
of southern CT and Long Island. Central Park, NY may also reach
80 degrees this afternoon as well. Sea breeze development
should help put a halt on temperature rise across southern CT
and Long Island this afternoon. Have lowered gusts however since
it appears mixing will not be deep enough to tap into gusts
with the more maritime air from the sea breeze developing on the
Island as well. A few gusts are also possible in the warm
sector mainly in NYC and NE NJ.
Mild conditions should last into tonight with the front
remaining to the north, with lows around 60 in NYC and urban NE
NJ, 50s most elsewhere, and some upper 40s well inland.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Problem of the day will be the timing of a back door cold front
that will drop south through the area as strong high pressure
builds into New England from eastern Canada. GFS rejected as its
boundary layer temps of late have been running on the high
side, and its deeper mixed layer and stronger WSW winds in the
warm sector may be overdone and delaying the front too long.
Meanwhile NAM timing appears about 3 hours too early compared to
the SREF mean, so have sided with the latter, showing at least
some warming before the front moves into far northern sections
by midday, reaching most of NYC and Long Island by 21Z. Anyone
planning outdoor activities on what should start off as a mild
day should be prepared for much cooler air to arrive at some
point in the afternoon, as temps after fropa should drop a good
10-15 degrees in the span of an hour or two, especially north
and east of NYC, with temps by sunset in the lower 60s in NYC,
50s most elsewhere, and mid/upper 40s across eastern CT/Long
Island.
Temps Sat night will continue falling steadily, with some light
rain also developing as an area of moisture/lift associated with
a lead shortwave well in advance of a storm over the nation's
mid section arrives approaches. If cold NAM is correct, sleet
could mix in across the interior late Sat night. Low temps will
be a chilly lower 40s in the NYC metro area, upper 30s most
elsewhere, and mid 30s across interior southern CT.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The beginning of the long term period will be dependent on where
the back door cold front sets up as high pressure to the north
builds southward along the northeastern coast. Likely the
surface cold front sets up near the region and becomes
stationary. Forcing along the front will produce precipitation
through the day, and will keep likely probabilities. A strong
southerly mid and upper level flow will bring the front through
as a warm front. Moisture influx from the Gulf of Mexico and the
Atlantic will increase precipitable water anomalies above
normal with 1 to 1 1/2 inches, Monday. Strong lift develops
along a strong cold front Monday with low pressure developing on
the front, then moving through Monday. There will be some
destabilization and elevated CAPE increasing to 200 to 300 J/KG
Monday and will have mention of thunder. Heaviest rainfall will
be late Sunday night into Monday.
The upper trough becomes negatively tilted on Monday and will be
slow to move through with an upper closed low tracking across
the region Monday night. With wraparound moisture will keep a
chance of showers Monday night.
A deep northwest flow will be across the region Tuesday as the
upper closed low and surface low track into southeastern
Canada.
Forecast becomes more uncertain Wednesday and Thursday as a
shortwave moves into the Pacific northwest Tuesday and moves
into midwestern trough and phases with the eastern closed low.
Guidance differs on where this low tracks, either across the
area or to the north. So, at this time will have slight chance
probabilities.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A frontal boundary remains stalled to the north of the area
through this evening, then begins to push south as a cold front
towards the area late tonight. This front then pushes south into
the area Saturday morning.
VFR through the TAF period, except at KGON/KBDR where MVFR
conditions area probable by around midday/early afternoon on
Saturday.
Seabreeze already in to all but KHPN (should be through around
19Z), KEWR (around 20Z) and KSWF (no seabreeze). Confidence in
frequent gusts is only high enough to have in TAFs at
KEWR where should see gusts to around 20KT. Elsewhere, could
see some occasional gusts to around 20KT until early evening.
Winds become SW throughout this evening at less than 10 KT, and
should become light and variable inland. Some uncertainty on
exact timing of cold front Saturday, for now reflect passage at
all but KEWR by 18Z Saturday. Winds will shift to the E-NE
behind the front at around 10KT.
LLWS is likely tonight at all but KSWF, with 40-45KT of winds
at around 2000 FT from around 3-12Z.

.MARINE...
Elevated ocean seas are likely for an extended period of time,
with some near shore gusts up to 25 kt possible this afternoon
and early evening as well, so ocean SCA extends into Sat
afternoon. A cold frontal passage should being a quick wind
shift most likely during the late afternoon on Sat, and E winds
in its wake could gust to gale force on the ocean and to SCA
levels elsewhere beginning some time Sat night or Sunday. Due to
the timing uncertainty have not yet issued a gale watch, but
one may become necessary.
SCA conditions will continue on all waters through Monday,
possibly into Monday evening. There could be a brief period of
sub-SCA winds and gusts Monday night as the center of low
pressure and a triple point frontal boundary move through.
Seas on the ocean will remain at SCA levels. Then with an
increasing pressure gradient force behind a cold front, gusts
increase once again to SCA levels Tuesday into Tuesday night,
mainly on the ocean waters. Ocean seas should remain at SCA
levels into Wednesday.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
RH decreasing to between 30-35% and S-SW winds gusting to 20-25
mph will present an elevated threat for fire growth/spread
today, mainly in NE NJ and parts of NYC unaffected by sea
breezes. After consultation with local fire officials, only fine
fuels appear be susceptible to burn at this time. Conditions
will be closely monitored.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
There is the potential for 1-2 inches of rain, with locally
higher amounts possible, from Saturday night through Monday
night. The heaviest rainfall is expected late Sunday night and
Monday. Localized urban and street flooding is possible.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Potential for minor coastal flood impacts during the times of
high tide late Sunday into Monday due to moderate E-SE flow.
Tidal departures of 1-2 ft are needed for minor flood thresholds
to be met.
