Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure impacts the region today and tonight, followed by high
pressure on Monday and Tuesday. Another storm approaches late
Tuesday night and moves through Wednesday into Wednesday night. High
pressure then returns for the remainder of the work week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A primary low moves through the St. Lawrence River Valley with a
cold front passing through late tonight. A secondary low to our
south will pass not too far east of Montauk late tonight as well.

Low RH values below 700 mb through this morning should preclude any
PCPN, however cannot rule out brief light snow over Orange County.
Moisture and lift then deepen this afternoon and tonight. PoPs
increase to at least likely across the area during the afternoon,
however there's a chance that some areas of Long Island and CT
remain dry through the day. Categorical PoPs across the area
tonight. Thermal profiles support rain or mostly rain for all but the
Lower Hudson Valley and adjacent areas of NE NJ and SW CT. Mixed
rain and snow is expected to occur for these locations this
afternoon before changing to rain. Only the highest elevations over
western Orange County would have a chance to see a mostly snow
event, and an inch or two of snow accumulation is currently
forecast. Accumulations for anywhere else seeing snow will be under
an inch. Highs ranging from the mid-upper 40s near the coast to the
mid-upper 30s over western Orange County. Looks like the warmest
period will be late-day into early evening.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure builds in during this period, but with a cyclonic flow
aloft and a tight pressure gradient, it'll be breezy during the
daytime. Light winds then follow for Monday night. High temperatures
will be a few degrees below normal, then radiational cooling will
allow for lows dropping into the teens across the northernmost
suburbs and the Pine Barrens region.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure will be the dominant feature over the region on
Tuesday, however a weak cold front or trough could bring a snow
shower or two north of the city. Highs in the 30s across the area.

Models have slowed down the approach of warm advection PCPN ahead of
low pressure system that is progged to have its center pass over or
nearby us Wednesday night. Uncertainty with where the center tracks
continues to maintain relatively low confidence regarding PCPN
types, more so NW of the city. An average of global model and
corresponding ensemble mean tracks has the low passing somewhere
over the NW half of the forecast area. What's more certain is the
likelihood of PCPN regardless of a subtle shift in track. PCPN could
start late Tuesday night from around the city and points west, but
becomes likely through the day on Wednesday before ending by
Thursday morning. This is shaping up to be another event that will
be primarily rain for most of the area with the NW zones seeing a
wintry mix. Will continue to highlight Orange County in the HWO for
the potential of a six inch or greater snow accumulation. A good
portion of the Lower Hudson Valley and adjacent areas of CT and NE NJ
could see advisory-level snow accumulation.

High pressure then likely keeps Thursday and Friday dry with
slightly below-normal temperatures.

WAA aloft develops with pcpn chances on Sat, potentially aided by a
shot of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. It is too far out to get a
true handle on the details, but slight chance PoP has been included
in the fcst.

.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High pressure off the northeast coast, with a low pressure system
over the upper midwest and Great Lakes region, will continue to move
offshore as the low pressure system moves into the region this
afternoon.

The low affects the area tonight as a cold front moves through late
tonight. High pressure then builds in behind the cold front late
tonight and Monday.

VFR through this Sunday morning. Conditions deteriorate to MVFR and
then IFR this afternoon with rain developing, except snow at KSWF.

this afternoon/evening as weak wave of low pressure approaches. SE

terminals this Eve, with light and variable elsewhere. LLWS likely
for terminals late today/this Eve with S winds around 45-55kt at 2
kft. Windshift to W/WNW around midnight for NYC/NJ metro terminals.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY....
.Late Sunday night...Rain ends and IFR/LIFR conditions improve
to VFR after midnight. NW gusts 20-30 kt towards daybreak.
.Monday...VFR. NW winds G20-30 KT.
.Monday night...VFR with diminishing winds.
.Tuesday...VFR. A low chance of light snow Tuesday afternoon
with MVFR conditions.
.Tuesday night-Wednesday...Wintry mix to rain for NYC/NJ metro and
coastal terminals, possible snow to wintry mix for interior
terminals. IFR or lower conditions.
.Wednesday night-Thursday...Return to VFR.

.MARINE...
The SCA for the ocean, eastern Sound, and the LI bays remains in
effect through late this morning with a gusty southerly flow around
25 KT, and ocean seas near 5 feet.

Late this morning into early this afternoon there will likely be a
lull in SCA conditions as winds turn more S-SE and the pressure
gradient weakens briefly. SCA conditions will return by late this
afternoon only on the ocean waters as low pressure moves into the
area waters and southerly winds and gusts increase once again. Ocean
seas will also build back to 5 feet this evening. So a SCA will
remain in effect on the ocean waters late this morning through
tonight.

With another wave of low pressure expected to develop off the
DELMARVA 00Z to 03Z Monday, and deepen and track northeast, there
may again be a brief period when winds are below SCA levels.

Then as west to northwest winds and gusts develop and increase
behind a cold front, expected to pass through the waters late
tonight, winds and gusts increase to SCA levels by early Monday
morning. So an advisory will be in effect for all the non ocean
waters Monday, with the SCA continuing on the ocean waters Monday.

There may be a brief period of time when occasional ocean gusts
reach just under gale force during Monday, however, with low
confidence and the brief timing, will not issue a gale watch or
warning for the ocean waters.

Winds decrease Mon ngt, but 5-ft seas linger on the ocean into the
evening. All areas will be blw SCA lvls Tue, then winds and seas
ramp up Wed and Thu as low pres passes invof the waters. Winds and
seas look to fall blw SCA lvls on Fri attm.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rainfall today through tonight should range from 0.50 to 1.25 inch,
with about 0.75 inch in NYC, and the highest amounts across eastern
Long Island and SE CT. No more than local nuisance local impacts
expected.

Another inch to inch and a half of liquid equivalent precipitation
is expected Wednesday through Wednesday night. This will fall as
rain for most the area, however a wintry mix is anticipated NW of
the city.
