offshore tonight. As low pressure takes shape over the southern
states on Friday, a leading warm front will begin to approach
Thursday afternoon. The deepening low will the approach from the

weekend, the low will move into the Canadian Maritimes as high
pressure builds from the Southeast states. Weak low pressure
will approach from the west late this weekend into early next
week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Temperatures will continue to slowly rise into the low to mid
40s this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Minor updates were
made to temperatures and dew points with this update to better
account for current conditions.

A mostly sunny day with temps near to slightly above seasonal
avg expected. NW-W winds will continue to diminish, then turn
WSW-SW this afternoon as the core of the high begins to pass
offshore.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
A mostly clear night also expected for tonight, and with
generally light SW winds and good radiational cooling sided with
lower end of MOS for low temps, with a wide range of lows,
ranging from the mid 30s in NYC to upper teens across the
interior valleys. While fcst lows are in the 20s across much of
eastern Long Island, with SW flow hourly temps there could
fluctuate quite a bit depending on how well any brief episodes
of wind stir up the boundary layer.

Thu should start off mostly sunny, then clouds lower and thicken
quickly during Thu afternoon, with at least a chance of light
rain by the PM rush for most of the area except out east, and
more likely in the NYC metro area. With earlier sunshine and
continued WAA high temps should range from 45-50, warmest across
eastern Long Island and CT where thicker clouds will take longer
to arrive.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
HWO has been highlighted for potential of freshwater and tidal
flooding with the upcoming system passing to the west of the
region late Thursday night through Friday.

There will be an approaching area of low pressure which will be the
focus of the long term. This developing mid latitude cyclone will
move along the Appalachians and to the west of the Hudson Valley
deepening along the way from Thursday night through Friday night.
Aloft, an amplified pattern sets up. Deep meridional trough
extending to the Gulf of Mexico approaches with strong southerly
steering flow ahead of it including the southerly upper level jet
that will increase and warm and moist air advection. The trough
negatively tilts on Friday as the upper level low approaches the
region.

The associated warm front approaches Thursday night into early
Friday and then moves across during the day Friday. Rain becomes
likely Thursday night with categorical PoP late Thursday night
through Friday morning. There will be rising temperatures into
the upper 40s to lower 50s Thursday night with increasing warm
and moist air advection via strengthening southeasterly flow.
This will be when a strong low level jet, as conveyed by NAM and
GFS fcst soundings with winds near 70kt in the 800-950mb layer,
moves in. Strong inversion just above the surface will limit
gust potential on land with exception of any heavy rain and any
thunderstorm which could bring down the higher gusts of perhaps
40 kt. Thunderstorms are possible since a little instability
will be developing in the low levels.

Rain could become heavy at times especially from late Thursday
night into early Friday. Models show potential for enhanced
lift with deep omega appearing in this timeframe as well.

After the warm frontal passage, there will continue to be rain
showers and with elevated instability in the warm sector. Max
temperatures Friday are forecast in the upper 50s. The region
remains in the warm sector Friday night with showers becoming
more occasional in frequency and fog will be possible as well
with the moisture laden ground and decreasing winds. Min
temperatures forecast Friday night are only in the mid to
upper 40s for much of the region.

For the weekend, low pressure moves northeast into the Canadian
Maritimes Saturday into Saturday night. A series of cold
fronts pass at the surface, one early Saturday and another one
passing through at night. Yet another cold front looks to move
across late Sunday night into Monday. Mainly dry conditions
expected for the weekend into early next week with just some
possible showers Saturday and late Sunday night, which for some
areas could be snow showers depending on ambient wet bulb
temperatures. Temperatures return to closer to normal values
overall this weekend into early next week.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure continues moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast
through tonight.

VFR through the TAF period.

Winds W to NW 5 to less than 10 kt will gradually back to the
SW through the day, and may even become south at KJFK. Winds
become light and variable tonight.

A low pressure system will then approach on Thursday. Ceilings
are forecast to lower quickly after 21Z to MVFR with rain
overspreading the terminals. Rain will then continue through the
overnight into Friday. A developing low level jet will increase
the threat for LLWS by Friday morning. Wind speeds could reach
40-60 kts at 2000 feet.

Quiet conditions with high pressure passing across today, then
to the east tonight into Thu.

SCA to gale force winds possible with system Thursday night
through Friday. Gale Watch issued for the ocean, south shore
bays, and the eastern Long Island Sound and bays for late
Thursday night through Friday.

Otherwise, SCA conditions for the ocean for pretty much the
entire long term marine forecast period (Thu night through Mon).
Extreme Eastern Long Island Sound could also hang onto 5-ft
seas of SCA criteria Friday into Sat. The remaining non-ocean
waters should return below SCA for Friday late afternoon
through Fri night, with a return to SCA levels for Sat before
returning below SCA on Sunday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Widespread rain of 1.75 to 2.25 inches possible for Thursday
afternoon through Friday night with locally higher amounts
possible. The bulk of rain falls late Thursday night through
Friday morning with about 1.5 inches of rain potentially in that
timeframe alone. The placement of locally higher amounts is
uncertain. Timing of the heavy rain is more certain and looks
to be focused around the 12Z timeframe Friday. Rivers from the
MMEFS (Meteorological Model Ensemble river Forecast System) in
the HSA are forecast to reach minor flooding on Friday.

Would expect minor nuisance flooding in low lying and poor
drainage areas for quite a few locations Friday with a chance
of flash flooding. Adding to the potential of any flash flooding
along the coast would be the timing of the heavy rain with
respect to high tide.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Full moon coming up on December 22, with potential for
widespread minor coastal and locally moderate coastal flooding,
particularly for the south shore bays of western Long Island on
Friday AM high tide cycle, with piling water and increasing SE
flow. Surge of 1-2 ft needed for most locations to reach minor
coastal flood benchmarks and 2-3 ft for moderate coastal flood
benchmarks. Runoff from heavy rain could add to water levels.

Coastal flooding also possible but to a lesser extent on
Saturday.
