Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
1258 AM EST Fri Nov 9 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds into the region overnight. The high moves
across New England Friday morning and then offshore Friday
afternoon. A coastal low tracks near Long Island Friday evening
on its way to the Gulf of Maine by Saturday morning. High
pressure builds in behind the low and remains through the
weekend before shifting offshore on Monday. Low pressure
developing over the southeast Monday night will rapidly
strengthen as it lifts up the east coast on Tuesday. High
pressure then returns for the latter part of the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Scattered to broken high clouds were moving across the region
ahead of an upper trough moving into the upper midwest and
western Great Lakes region, and with a upper jet max moving into
the Ohio Valley. Surface high was building in from the north.
Temperatures continues to fall a little quicker than forecast
especially inland where skies were still clear to thin
scattered, and where winds have decoupled and become near calm.
Updated the sky and hourly temperature forecasts through the
overnight. Winds were picking up across Long Island and
temperatures at KFOK, Westhampton, should hold steady or even
rise a few degrees.
The surface high pressure ridge axis shifts through the region
overnight and some mid and high level clouds will be around
which would prevent ideal radiational cooling conditions. And
low temperatures will likely be too warm to preclude frost where
the growing season still continues.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
500mb low shifts from the Upper MS Valley to the Great Lakes as
it closes Friday into Friday night. At the same time, a primary
surface low shifts north from the Ohio Valley to the eastern
Great Lakes. In addition, a secondary low approaches from the
Mid-Atlantic and eventually passes through Long Island during
the late night hours. A cold front then quickly follows
through.
Rain develops in the afternoon and pushes east through the tri-
state area into early evening. The core of a low level jet then
approaches soon after, enhancing lift and interacting with deep
moisture for potential periods of heavy rain. GFS has come into
better agreement with the other models regarding the axis of
heaviest rainfall, which is progged to stretch through NE NJ and
the city northeastward through around northern Middlesex County
CT. This axis is along where the strongest convergence and mid-
level frontogenesis are modeled. The strong forcing from the
LLJ combined with some elevated CAPE may also produce a few
thunderstorms along and to the east of the secondary low track
- over LI and CT.
Based on 3-hour and 6-hour flash flood guidance, the threat of
flash flooding is increasing, with the timing most likely during
the evening hours. After collaboration with the surrounding
offices, will issue a Flash Flood Watch for all but Suffolk
County for the nighttime hours. See the hydrology section below
for more details.
Breezy conditions develop late in the day with the strongest
winds during the night as the low passes through. 900-950mb
winds increase to 60-70KT with the LLJ as it passes east of the
city, however a temperature inversion looks to be strong enough
to prevent very strong gusts from mixing down to the surface for
the most part. Winds will still be fairly strong at the top of
the mixed layer, but with a SE flow, expecting that widespread
gusts will remain below advisory criteria. With that said, there
is a chance for convection to mix down isolated strong to
severe level wind gusts at the surface.
High temperatures Friday will be near normal for the most part with
low temperatures above normal.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
NWP guidance is in good agreement with the H5 pattern across
North America through the weekend. Upper trough swings through
the northeast on Sat with the upper level low strengthening as
it lifts through SE Canada. The flow across the eastern CONUS
becomes quasi zonal over the weekend in response to the
departing upper low, ridging over the Caribbean and a highly
amplified upper pattern developing in the eastern Pacific and
western US. The progression of the aforementioned upper trough
becomes uncertain as it tracks through across the CONUS and
potentially interacts with additional energy moving into the
Great Lakes on Tue. Large differences become apparent aloft by
the middle of next week leading to a low confidence forecast.
Pcpn should end by 12z Sat although winds will become quite
gusty as a result of strong CAA and a tightening pressure
gradient from the strengthening departing low and high pres
building to the SW. Winds of 15-25G35-40mph should be common as
a result. Winds gradually diminish Sat night as the low moves
further away and gradient relaxes.
High pressure continues to build towards the area over the
weekend and shifts offshore on Monday. Dry and unseasonably cool
(around 10 degrees below normal) conditions will prevail
through this time. A WAA pattern begins to develop on Mon as the
low departs so highs should be a few degrees warmer than Sun.
Mid and high clouds will also start to return Sun night and Mon
as the next storm system develops over the SE/Gulf coast states.
The low is forecast to track through the SE states and pass
near or over the local area on Tue, then continue through New
England while rapidly strengthening. Models have come into
better agreement with the track of this system as compared to 24
hours ago, although the potential impacts are still fuzzy this
far out. Do see the potential for wind and rain impacts but will
need a few more runs to explicitly pin these down.
Breezy conditions are expected as the storm departs Tue
night/Wed although building high pres will bring a return to dry
weather for midweek.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Low pres develops over the Mid-Atlantic States today, then
tracks over Long Island tonight.
VFR conditions will prevail through this morning. Rain
overspreads the area late this afternoon and continues this
evening. An isolated thunderstorm is possible 0-4z,
particularly E of the city terminals . VFR looks to develop
quickly after the rain ends overnight.
Light N winds veering to the E/NE this morning. Winds increase from
the E thru the day, with gusts at or above 25 kt this evening.
Winds shift to the WNW behind the system after midnight.
LLWS is expected mainly E of the city terminals.
.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...
.Late tonight...Becoming VFR. W winds G20-30KT likely,
strongest near the coasts.
.Saturday-Saturday night...VFR. WNW winds G30-40KT likely.
.Sunday...VFR. NW-WNW winds G20-30KT probable.
.Sunday night-Monday...VFR.
.Monday night-Tuesday...MVFR or lower conditions in rain.
Shifting S-SE winds G15-25KT possible Monday night.
&&
.MARINE...
Made some minor adjustments to the winds and gusts, especially
across the ocean waters as both were a few knots higher than
forecast. Seas were on target and no changes were made to those
at this time.
Tranquil conditions continue overnight as a high pressure ridge
shifts through the area waters. Winds and seas then increase on
Friday with the approach of low pressure. Gale force winds will
be possible towards sunset, but more likely at night for all
but western LI Sound and NY Harbor - where a SCA will go into
effect. Otherwise, a gale watch will be in effect late- day
Friday through Friday night.
Have extended the gale watch to include NY Harbor on Sat as
strong CAA develops in combination with a tight pressure
gradient. Have also extended the watch temporally, ending at 00z
for NY Harbor and the south shore bays and 06z elsewhere.
Western LI Sound is the only zone without a gale watch at this
point, but it may be eventually be needed as gusts are falling
just short attm.
Winds and seas will continue to diminish through Sun with all
waters falling below SCA levels by late in the day. Tranquil
conditions will then remain on the waters though Monday as high
pressure builds towards and then east of the area. Then an area
of low pressure developing near the SE coast Mon night will
rapidly deepen as it lifts up the east coast through Tue,
bringing the potential for SCA and possibly gale force winds
back to the waters.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
Dry conditions continue through Friday morning.
Currently expecting mainly from 1 to 2 inches of rain with locally
higher amounts possible from Friday afternoon through Friday night.
Lowest amounts expected to be over eastern Long Island. The most
likely outcome will be minor flooding of urban/poor drainage areas.
However, given the wet antecedent conditions and leaves clogging
drains, there is an increasing chance for localized flash flooding.
The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur during the evening hours
of Friday night.
Dry weather is expected Sat through Mon eve. Another 1-2 inch
rainfall event is possible late Mon night-Tue.
