High surf through tonight and a high rip current risk through Tuesday. * COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline during times of high tide tonight. Expect 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal bays. * SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves will result in widespread beach erosion and flooding with minor damage possible to base of dune structures. * SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High rip current risk. Surf heights 6 to 9 ft. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is expected or occurring. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water, and take appropriate action to protect life and property. A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers. * COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Widespread flooding of vulnerable
areas near the waterfront and shoreline during times of high
tide tonight. Expect 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground
level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in
numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low
lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and
homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles
parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely
become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the
waterfront along tidal bays.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves will result in widespread
beach erosion and flooding with minor damage possible to base
of dune structures.
* SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High rip current risk. Surf
heights 5 to 8 ft along Atlantic ocean beaches.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is expected or
occurring. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert
for rising water, and take appropriate action to protect life and
property.
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including

near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves will result in beach
erosion and flooding with minor damage possible to base of
dune structures.
* SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High rip current risk. Surf
heights 6 to 9 ft along Atlantic ocean beaches.

A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and

The National Weather Service in New York NY has cancelled the
Coastal Flood Warning.
* LOCATIONS...Vulnerable locales along Queens and Nassau
Counties.
* TIDAL DEPARTURE...1 1/2 to 2 ft, locally 2 1/2 ft above
astronomical tides tonight. 1/2 to 1 ft Tuesday morning,
locally 1 1/2 to 2 ft.
* TIMING...Moderate coastal flooding during the times of high
tide tonight, and minor coastal flooding during times of high
tide Tuesday morning. High surf a high rip current risk
through Tuesday.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Widespread flooding of vulnerable
areas near the waterfront and shoreline during times of high
tide tonight. Expect 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground
level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in
numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low
lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and
homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles
parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely
become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the
waterfront along tidal bays.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves will result in widespread
beach erosion and flooding with minor damage possible to base
of dune structures.
* SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High rip current risk. Surf
heights 5 to 8 ft along Atlantic ocean beaches.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Brief minor flooding of the most
vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves will result in beach
erosion and flooding with minor damage possible to base of
dune structures.
* SURF AND RIP CURRENT RISK...High rip current risk. Surf
heights 5 to 8 ft along Atlantic ocean beaches.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
Strong rip currents and large dangerous surf will make the beach
hazardous. Heed the advice of lifeguards and beach patrols. Pay
attention to flags and posted signs. Swim near a lifeguard. If
caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against
the current. If able, swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure based in the Canadian Maritimes will move out into
the northern Atlantic Ocean through tonight. A warm front to
the south and west will approach the area today and move across
tonight into Tuesday. An associated cold front will then move
into the region Tuesday night and dissipate for midweek. High
pressure in northern New England then moves into the region for
late this week. Meanwhile tropical Cyclone Florence is forecast
to pass to the southwest. Refer to the National Hurricane Center
for the latest forecast updates.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Cool maritime airmass with stratiform rain expected through
this afternoon. Expecting highs again below normal and staying
in the 60s with increasing easterly flow in response to
steepening pressure gradient over the region.
In the mid levels, a northwest extension of the subtropical
ridge builds towards the region this afternoon.
A high risk of rip currents and high surf are expected at ocean
beaches this afternoon, so will maintain the rip current
statement and high surf advisory.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The airmass will transition to become more warm and humid behind
the warm front. The ridge in the mid levels will continue to
strengthen with more height rises tonight through Tuesday night.
The ridge remains through midweek.
Along with this warm front passage, instability will increase,
making for more probable thunderstorms, especially overnight.
This will be a slight chance of thunderstorms Monday evening and
a chance of them overnight, as well as Tuesday through
Thursday.
Otherwise, rain will become more shower like in form, allowing
for more periodic rainfall. The rain will become more
intermittent. The winds will also decrease behind the warm front
and become more southerly. Model guidance indicates saturation
of low levels with rising dewpoints overnight into early Tuesday
so added in patchy fog to the forecast. This will especially
become apparent outside of any areas of rainfall.
With the thunderstorms late tonight, the timing of the warm
front will be key to determine the thunderstorm threats. Before
the warm front arrives, the region will be in a high shear,
minimal CAPE environment and with and behind the warm front,
that shear will decrease but the CAPE will increase. There will
be a balance between the two and so the thunderstorms will have
a very low chance of producing both flash flooding and severe
weather. Confidence is low on this occurring as coverage of
showers and thunderstorms themselves are also uncertain. Would
think there is a little higher chance of some sub-severe gusty
winds and quick burst of heavy rain equating to minor flooding
with the thunderstorms.
There will be an approaching cold front for Tuesday and the
front will move in Tuesday night and dissipate going into
Wednesday. The parent low associated with this front weakens and
the region will eventually be left with high pressure building
in from the north.
The high pressure area builds from northern New England into the
local area for mid to late in the week. The region will not be
directly under the center of the high and the airmass will
remain warm and humid with temperatures at least a few degrees
above normal. There will remain to be a chance of showers and
thunderstorms Tuesday night through Thursday. Highest chances of
them to note are Tuesday afternoon, when showers and
thunderstorms are forecast to become likely as the cold front
approaches and starts to move into the area. Overall coverage
will be lowering and in the short term from Tuesday onward,
convective coverage is expected to be scattered most of the
time.
The high risk of rip currents will likely continue on Tuesday.
Surf will be a little lower, initially near 6-7 ft and then
probably more in the 4-6 ft range on Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The associated southern branch shortwave trough dampens as it
lifts northeast of the region and the western Atlantic ridge
expands westward into the Ohio Valley. This in turn suppresses
convection for the end of the week as high pressure builds to
the north of the area.
The upper level ridge will also become a big player in the
future track of Tropical Cyclone Florence. Global models do
differ some in the magnitude of the western Atlantic ridge with
a potential weakness developing late next week near the eastern
seaboard. The latest official forecast from the National
Hurricane Center takes the system westward toward the Carolina
coast toward the end of the week. Outside of a prolonged period
of swells, resulting in rough surf, dangerous rips currents, and
beach erosion, it is appearing less likely that the region will
experience direct impacts. Refer to the National Hurricane
Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov) for the latest forecast updates.
Temperatures will remain above normal through much of the period.

Winds overall weaker for the inland terminals. Winds at 2000 FT

.MARINE...
Decreasing confidence of reaching gale criteria over the non-
ocean waters. Low level inversion is too steep to allow for mix
down of 35-40kt winds at around 200 ft, and by the time this
inversion mixes out, the winds aloft have diminished to below
gale criteria. As a result, have cancelled the gale warning for
NY Harbor and W Long Island sound and replaced with a Small
Craft Advisory through midnight. For the remainder of the non-
ocean waters, depending on the exact timing of the surface and
low level warm front, still have the potential for gales early
this evening, but confidence in this is decreasing. If current
trends hold, could lower to SCA in some/all of these waters with
the next update. Over the coastal ocean waters, do expect gales
mainly over areas 10-20nm offshore, so will continue gales as is
there.
Seas are expected to elevate to 3 to 5 ft across most waters
with exception of Long Island bays. Late tonight, conditions
will decrease with the seas and winds. Eventually just SCA
ocean seas will remain by very early Tuesday. The SCA ocean
seas are forecast to linger on Tuesday through Wednesday before
increasing again Wednesday night and Thursday with winds
becoming easterly once again.
Overall, ocean seas will remain above SCA through the week due
to swells from Florence. The highest seas look to be toward the
end of the week as the system approaches the Carolina coast.

.HYDROLOGY...
Additional rain is forecast to be between 0.75 to 1.25 inches,
with locally higher amounts, through tonight, with the greatest
amounts expected across northeastern NJ into the Lower Hudson
Valley. Most rain is expected to fall steadily through the day
into the evening. Minor urban and poor drainage will be possible
with more flooding possible if heavier rain coincides with the
time of high tide. There is a slight chance of flash flooding
with thunderstorms tonight.
For Tuesday through Thursday, the more humid airmass in place
will have more precipitable waters which are once again forecast
to reach near 2 inches. This will allow for heavy downpours with
any shower or thunderstorms. No significant widespread
hydrologic impacts are expected though. Again, some localized
minor flooding will be possible.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Gale force E/NE winds will help to continue to build surge to 1 to 2
ft above astronomical tides, locally 2 1/2 ft along the south shore
bays this morning and again this evening. Surge will gradually drop
late tonight as onshore winds begin to weaken.
Widespread moderate coastal flooding is expected this morning's high
tide for vulnerable areas along southern Queens and Nassau County,
with moderate coastal flooding likely again for this evening's high
tide. Elsewhere, generally minor coastal flooding is expected across
Western LI Sound, SW Suffolk, and NY/NJ harbor through tonight's
high tide, likely peaking this morning. The coastal flood threat
will diminish heading into Tuesday and midweek as onshore winds
diminish and wave energy subsides.
At the Atlantic beachfront, E/ESE 8-11 ft swells will help to build
surf to 5 to 8 ft. With the elevated water levels, widespread
beach flooding and erosion is expected during the time of high
tide, with minor damage to dune structures possible. Surf height
is expected to decrease Tuesday into midweek, before likely
becoming high once again late week as large SE swells from
Florence impact the coast.
