The first system tonight and Thursday will bring rain amounts of up to 2 inches in the northwest counties with much lighter amounts on the Plateau. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Nashville TN 1211 PM CST Tue Feb 20 2018 .DISCUSSION... Will be updating the suite of forecast products to remove any morning wording shortly after noontime. Will tweak afternoon wx elements to go along with current conditions and consensus of short range model solutions. Will also tweak hrly temp, dewpoint, and wind speed/direction grids. && .DISCUSSION... You'll be greeted by unusually warm temperatures when you head out the door this morning. Warm southerly winds kept temperatures in the 60s in most areas overnight, and at 4 am, the temperature at both Nashville and Clarksville was 68 degrees! Still looks like more record-breaking warmth today, and it won't take a lot of sunshine to do it. When we start the day, we'll only be about 10 degrees away from our record high of 78 degrees at Nashville, set back in 2014. In fact, we're still expecting a high of 81 degrees this afternoon at Nashville. South winds will be gusty all day, with some gusts between 25 and 30 mph. More warm lows are expected for tonight, ranging mostly in the lower and middle 60s. However, a cold front will be working its way into our extreme northwestern counties by 12z Wednesday, dropping temperatures into the middle 50s at Clarksville by 15z, and down to 52 by 18z. Meanwhile, the southeastern half of the Mid-State will be warm enough, long enough, to allow for highs to top out tomorrow in the lower to middle 70s. The cold front should pass by Nashville around noon, sending temperatures on a slow downward trend thereafter. The cold front goes stationary over our southeastern areas Wednesday night, and then starts to lift back north as a warm front by late night and on Thursday, bringing southerly winds back to all but our northwestern areas by Thursday afternoon. The slow movement of the front in Middle Tennessee Wednesday night and Thursday, allows locally heavy rainfall amounts to accumulate on Wednesday and Wednesday night. Totals during that period will range between one and two inches over northwestern and north- central areas, with amounts below an inch elsewhere. The rain on Wednesday and Wednesday night will essentially "prime the pump" for even more rainfall late-week and over the weekend. The bulk of the rain over the next five days will fall between 12z Wednesday and 12z Sunday, when areas north of a Lobelville-to- Portland line will line pick up between 3 and 5 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible. Models differ on the rain totals for Saturday afternoon and night, and have trended our grids toward a compromise. Thus, it's certainly possible, if some of the "wetter" models verify, some spots over our northwest could see more than 6 inches of rainfall during the upcoming 5-day period. The rain finally pushes east of our area during the daylight hours on Sunday, with little or no rain expected for the remainder of the forecast period, between Sunday and next Tuesday. Temperatures for the extended periods remain above normal, though probably not quite as toasty as what we're experiencing now. && .AVIATION... 18Z TAF DISCUSSION. CKV/BNA/MQY/CSV...For CKV/BNA/MQY will go with the trend of any current VFR ceiling thresholds slowly progressing to MVFR thresholds by 21/18Z. For CSV, will go with a continuance of MVFR ceilings thru 21/18Z. Sfc pressure gradient should support sly sustained winds 10-14kts gusting up to 22kts at times thru 21/18Z. Because of overall slow progression of moisture ahead of approaching sfc frontal system, think light rainfall at best expected near end of valid terminal forecast period.
