Variable conditions due to the areas of dense across much of the
northern half of the forecast area. BVN starting to improve a
little. Over time, the low level flow will be increasing as well,
however the moisture will be too.
Left the current dense fog advisory in place and the WSW.
There will be increasing precipitation overnight and Wednesday and
midshift will need to assess if an advisory is needed as the
temperatures are below freezing ahead of the warming with light
precipitation moving in Wednesday morning
The strong h3 jet continues to dive southeast over Baja Mexico
with 130m ht falls with the trough over the SW U.S. Broad upper
level divergence increases through 12Z with increasing omega and
steepening lapse rates. H85 temperatures do not modify much
through 12Z over the cwa, however strong moisture advection is
occurring with a steady rise in H85 dewpoints.
A broad area of echoes are increasing across Kansas, although
metars do not show much reaching the ground with thunderstorms
closer to the h5 low over Arizona. Will see the first wave of
precipitation move in Wednesday morning.

Dense fog has persisted across southeast NE through mid afternoon,
but was finally slowly improving. Should be able to cancel the
dense fog advisory that remains within the next half hour as fog
continues to lift.
Otherwise, we're still looking at a major winter storm to affect
the area, but the axis of heaviest snow will remain just west of
our area of responsibility. Substantial moisture will be
increasing ahead of the upper trough/surface low combination, such
that rainfall of 1.5 to 2.0 still seems likely for many areas.
This is a result of PW increasing to 250-300% or 3-4 standard
deviations above normal, which is within the 99% 30 year
climatological average. Lots of available moisture with this
system.
Precipitation will begin developing after midnight, but becomes
especially widespread Wednesday. As precipitation develops, there
may be a wintry mix north of I80 Wednesday morning, but with
warming temperatures, any wintry mix becomes all rain and should
not yield any significant travel problems in the morning.
Rain then continues Wednesday night, but as an inverted trough
begins to develop across the region, in response to the digging
closed low coming out of the Rockies, colder air gets drawn
southward into central NE. This will begin to change the rain over
to a wintry mix in northeast NE, becoming all snow by daybreak
Thursday in Knox and Antelope counties. Instability will also be
increasing by daybreak Wednesday, with isolated thunderstorms also
becoming possible along/south of I80 as that region remains on the
warm and moist side of the surface low that moves through the
forecast area through the day. Precipitation rates really diminish
by Thursday afternoon southern areas as the dry slot moves in,
but wintry weather continues across northeast NE, with northwest
winds 25 to 35 mph. The low pulls northeast of the area Thursday
night. By then, the deeper moisture begins to pull away as well,
and the event winds down.
The above scenario suggests that Lincoln to Omaha and points to
the south will be mostly rain for this event, with a few
thunderstorms possible. Within these area, up to 2" of rainfall
could occur. And while there isn't ice on the rivers, there will
be substantial rises on area rivers, many to action stage, and a
few smaller creeks possibly to flood stage. Across northeast NE,
there will be a wintry mix, and still expecting 3-7" of snow
across Knox and Antelope counties, and possibly a tenth of inch of
ice before the changeover. That changeover really takes place by 6
am Thursday. Given that it's still 2 days away, will keep the
winter storm going for now.
Lingering snow showers still on track Friday for the northern half
of the forecast area, but little additional accumulation expected
except near the SD border where another inch could occur. Significantly
colder on Friday with blustery northwest winds.

Dry conditions on Saturday, although there is another trough
moving through the Plains, but any precip would probably be south
of the area across KS and MO. Dry conditions continue Sunday.
There is another front coming through on Monday on New Years Eve,
which could give us a rain/snow mix as hinted at by the ECMWF,
but the GFS is dry. New Years Day looks dry and cold.

Potent storm system moving in for the next couple of days. LIFR
conditions are at KOFK and KLNK with VFR conditions at KOMA. Low
level flow will continue to increase and KLNK/KOFK and should see
some improvement in visibilities, however precipitation will be
on the increase as well. Temperatures below freezing at KOFK and
thermal profile supports potential for a mix before temperatures
warm enough to change it over to all rain. At KLNK/KOMA...fzfg at
KLNK then temperatures warming as the precipitation moves in.
Left predominant weather type as rain there, however will need to
monitor radar trends. East and northeast winds increase 10 to
20kts. Included low level wind shear at all three sites after 16
to 18Z.
