The 06z run of the GFS is in and supports an axis of higher QPF
farther north along Interstate 80. This trend now provides run to
run consistency with the 00Z GFS, which is concerning, but still
remains farther north than all of other models including WPC
guidance. The 09z RAP still supports the heaviest axis of snow
from southeast NE through southern IA, in line with our current
forecast. Will be eagerly awaiting the 12z models with full upper
air radiosonde ingest to see if a northward shift of the snowfall
axis is needed. If this axis would shift north, it would have more
of a travel impact along Interstate 80. Stay tuned.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday)

...Winter Storm Will Impact the Region Tonight and Sunday...

The main focus remains an impending winter storm that will bring
rain changing to snow tonight, and ending on Sunday. 2-6" of snow
are forecast, with the highest amounts in extreme southeast NE and
southwest IA. Northerly winds will also increase to 20 to 40 mph,
which will create blowing snow, and near blizzard conditions for a
short period.

The storm of interest was currently moving through the Pacific
Northwest and will cross the northern Rockies today. Ahead of the
storm system, we'll have one more mild and above normal day with
westerly surface winds which will help to again boost temperatures
into the upper 40s to upper 50s. Scattered rain showers may also
develop in northeast Nebraska during the afternoon as surface flow
becomes northeast, with more of an upslope component. A few
sprinkles could reach Omaha very late in the afternoon, but the
remainder of southeast NE and southwest IA should remain dry.

As the upper low moves off the Rockies tonight, lee cyclogenesis
occurs across eastern Colorado with the surface low moving to the
KS/MO border by daybreak Sunday. this will allow precipitation to
spread through the forecast area from north to south, initially
as rain, but changing to snow through the night. At the same time,
northeast winds become north and increase to 20 to 30 mph, with
gusts up to 40 mph possible in response to the tightening
pressure gradient around the low to the south. Initially a coupled
upper jet structure is noted which puts the FA in the enhanced
location of upper level divergence. This storm system has been
challenging in that some of the models have flip flopped on
snowfall amounts and even the axis of heaviest snow. In fact, the
GFS model at this time yesterday was almost dry, and now would
suggest 6 to 10" of snow along I80. This model seems to be the
outlier though based on ensemble solutions. Of note, if the GFS
continues a trend of high QPF with later model runs, that would
increase the snow totals. It's interesting that the ECMWF also
increased QPF significant in the 12-18z time frame, but displaced
about 100 miles farther south than the GFS. The SREF and Canadian
are also displaced farther south, thus more support that the 00Z
GFS may be an outlier.

Snow and blowing snow continues Sunday morning along and south of
I80, but accumulating snow winds down during the afternoon.

Using a blended model approach, it still seems likely that 2 to 6"
of snow will be possible with this system in our area, although
it may be hard to accurately measure with the strong northwest
winds. Model consensus still suggests an axis of heavier snow from
northeast KS through extreme southeast NE, northern MO, and
southern IA as the bullseye for heaviest amounts which could range
from 6 to 10". On the plus side, this remains quick moving
system, with about a 8-12 hour potential window for accumulating
snow. During that time, there could be a three hour window of 1"
snows per hour, as some of the lift is maximized within a
dendritic zone aloft.

Overall, given that this is occurring at the end of the
Thanksgiving holiday weekend, on the 2nd busiest day of the year,
this system will have substantial travel impacts, including
travelers on I80 through the length of NE and IA, and I29 through
the length of IA. After significant NWS inter office coordination,
we have opted to convert most of the existing winter storm watch
to a solid winter weather advisory for 3-5" of snow, with areas
of blowing snow, and near whiteout conditions at times in open

snow, just not confident we can reach the 3 hour 1/4 mile
visibility criteria at this time. We continue to advise holiday
travelers passing through the area to adjust their plans to travel
home today instead of Sunday if possible.

Another weak system could bring some snow on Wednesday into
Thursday. The models are suggesting another big potential storm
for next weekend, but we are still seeing widely different
solutions between the GFS and ECMWF, thus forecaster confidence
is pretty low on the details.

VFR conditions are forecast into the evening. However rapidly
deteriorating conditions will overspread all of eastern Nebraska
overnight. Rain will change to snow from northwest to southeast
beginning by 02Z at KOFK, then by 10Z at KLNK and KOMA. Cigs will
drop to MVFR in rain, but then LIFR to VLIFR cigs/vsbys are likely
when snowing, helped by north winds increasing into the 20 to 35kt
range. Severely restricted visibilities are expected for several
hours at all sites, with KLNK and KOMA seeing the worst conditions
for a few hours either side of 12Z.

amounts 1 to 3 inches could occur through daybreak. During the
changeover, northerly winds will increase to 25 to 40 mph which
will create areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility and near
whiteout conditions at times. A winter weather advisory is in
effect for the area.

Minor flooding will also continue on the Missouri River above
Lewis and Clark Lake.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Snow and blowing snow will end from north to south through the
day Sunday. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow could occur along
and south of Interstate 80. A winter weather advisory will remain
in effect for portions of southeast Nebraska through the day.
Travel may be difficult.

Minor flooding will continue on the Missouri River above Lewis
and Clark Lake.

A Blizzard Warning is in Effect for the area beginning at 3 am
Sunday.

A fast-moving winter storm is expected to bring blizzard
conditions to the area between 3am and 6pm Sunday. Precipitation
will begin as rain and change to snow overnight. Snow will be wet
and heavy initially and could freeze to power lines, trees, and
untreated roads. Cold air will sink south through the morning and
falling snow will become lighter in nature. Combined with 25-35
mph winds gusting to 40 mph at times, significant blowing and
drifting is expected which will reduce visibilities to near zero
at times. Snowfall totals in the area will range between 3-7
inches. Travel will be dangerous to impossible at times.
