Issued at 400 AM CST Sun Mar 4 2018

Forecast concerns will continue to be increasing rain potential
through tonight with the chance for thunderstorms, then rain
changing to snow in northeast Nebraska and an extended period of
windy conditions. Blizzard potential in northeast Nebraska with
the combination of strong winds and snow. Delayed watch a few
hours and expanded the winter storm watch due to the snow amounts
forecast and high winds. Wind advisories will also need to be
considered for Tuesday farther south across parts of eastern
Nebraska. In southeast Nebraska, the fire danger index should be
in the very high category Monday.

Water vapor satellite imagery shows two closed mid-level low
pressure systems over the Pacific Northwest toward Alberta Canada.
The ridge axis has shifted slightly eastward. At the surface, a
warm front is over parts of Nebraska and extends westward toward
low pressure in Wyoming and Colorado. Brisk southeast winds
continue with temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s. The 40 to
50kt low level jet was still over much of central and eastern
Nebraska.

There is good model agreement that the closed low over Alberta
will stay in place while the low over Oregon migrates northeast
into Montana today with the trough becoming elongated into western
South Dakota and western Nebraska tonight, closing off as it
slides southeast toward southeast South Dakota/northeast Nebraska
Monday. By Monday afternoon the EC/NAM/GFS all have the closed low
over southwest Minnesota with slow movement across northern Iowa
Tuesday.

Warm advection increases today along with lift with the
approaching storm system and should continue to see the clouds
increase with some light rain or a few isolated showers possible.
The dryline makes it into central Nebraska by 00Z. Surface low
pressure in the lee of the Rockies moves into central Nebraska and
tonight and toward the Missouri River by 12Z Monday. A few
showers and thunderstorms will be possible tonight. SPC removed
our area from the marginal threat for severe storms. H85 dewpoints
now increase more into the 8 to 10 degree range, so still some
small threat for severe storms due to the strong low level winds
and low freezing levels.

Rain changes to snow after 09Z in northeast Nebraska with some 1
to 3 inch accumulations Monday. Periods of snow continue through
Tuesday. Due to the high winds 25 to 35 mph and gusts to 55 mph
with blowing snow. Decided to convert the winter storm watch to a
blizzard warning and add additional counties to the winter storm
watch. Higher snow amounts will depend on the track and there has
been good agreement that northeast Nebraska is clipped by the snow.
Storm total snow accumulations range from 1 to 8 inches through
Tuesday, with the highest amounts toward the South Dakota border.

Farther south, some light snow amounts are mentioned; generally
and inch or less. Winter weather advisories and wind advisories
will need to be considered due to the high winds Tuesday.

The fire danger index should be near critical for southeast
Nebraska Monday. For now, have it in the very high category.

Breezy Tuesday night with a few flurries possible. Temperatures
will be colder for Wednesday in the 30s with more 40s and 50s for
the rest of the extended. There is a chance for rain/snow over the
weekend with a clipper type system that moves across the Northern
Plains.

There will continue to be some ceilings from 3500 to 5000 feet
around the area overnight, affecting mainly KOMA. Lower ceilings
in the MVFR range should move into the TAF sites 12Z-15Z Sunday
and then mostly prevail the rest of the day. There could be a bit
of light rain or drizzle around during the afternoon. Chances will
be higher Sunday evening with isolated thunder possible. Did not
mention thunder in the TAFs at this time.

There is a slight chance for thunderstorms Sunday night.

A strong storm system will push across the region Monday into
Tuesday morning. Snow accumulations will be found mainly over
northeast Nebraska with amounts ranging from 2 to 4 inches. In
addition to this, gusty northerly winds may result in near white
out conditions Monday evening.

Meanwhile, snow accumulations over southwest Iowa should be
around an inch or so.
