Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area

.SYNOPSIS...A slight cooling trend is likely to persist into
Sunday as a weak weather system pushes inland north of the
region. This will also help to deepen the marine layer with the
potential for some late night or early morning coastal fog and/or
drizzle. Warming conditions are then likely early next week in
response to building high pressure over California.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:25 PM PDT Saturday...Onshore winds will
persist while the marine layer deepens due to cool air advection
with an upper level trough. As the marine layer deepens cool air
advection in the lower levels of the atmosphere will continue to
gradually erode the marine layer temperature inversion tonight.
All in all expect a deeper marine layer along with spotty light
drizzle or a light mist on the coast. Some restoration of the
marine layer is a possibility Sunday into Monday as thermal ridging
redevelops. For the rest of the weekend and into next week daily
high and low temperatures will tend to drift to either side of May
climatology by up to a few degrees at most based on recent statistical
guidance.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:45 PM PDT Saturday...Temperatures at this
hour are generally a few degrees cooler compared to 24 hours ago
across the region. This is likely in response to an approaching
mid/upper level trough that continues to advect high level clouds
inland across the state. Meanwhile, onshore winds persist keeping
temperatures near the coast in the upper 50s to lower 60s while
60s and 70s are more common inland.

Look for the marine layer to return overnight and deepen slightly as
a short-wave trough pushes inland to the north. This should allow
for low clouds to spread well inland with the potential for coastal
fog as well as light mist/drizzle in favored spots. Similar
conditions are likely into Sunday with low clouds retreating back to
the Pacific by late morning with a mix of sun and clouds over inland
areas.

A slight warming trend is then likely early next week as the
aforementioned mid/upper level system exits to the east and a ridge
of high pressure builds aloft. This ridge is then forecast to shift
to the east as another trough approaches the Pacific Northwest
midweek. Overall, not expecting much change in day-to-day conditions
other than minor fluctuations in temperatures and low clouds
associated with the marine layer.

.AVIATION...As of 10:40 PM PDT Saturday...For 06z TAFs. A little
bit of a tricky cig forecast over the next 6-12 hours. Latest fog
product satellite imagery shows patchy stratus developing around
the SF Bay Area (specifically the East Bay region and San Mateo
coast) and the Monterey Bay Area. Anticipate stratus to become
more defined and spread out by midnight or so. Both the Fort Ord
and Bodega Bay Profilers currently show a marine layer depth
around 2000 feet. Low confidence on cig heights overnight, but
cigs may drop below 1000 feet after midnight at some TAF sites.
Low clouds are expected to clear between 16-18z tomorrow morning.
Generally light W/WSW winds overnight, becoming breezy out of the
W/NW tomorrow afternoon.

Moderate forecast confidence.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR to MVFR by midnight, give/take an hour.
Best guess for stratus clearing will be around 17-1730z tomorrow
morning. Onshore winds 5-10 kt overnight, increasing to around 20
kt by mid afternoon tomorrow.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...After a few hours of clearing, stratus
has returned the Monterey Peninsula. Expect cigs to reach KSNS
over the next hour or so, with cigs lowering through the night
from MVFR to IFR. Light to moderate onshore winds expected
through the forecast period.

.MARINE...as of 8:20 PM PDT Saturday...Light to moderate
northwest winds will prevail over the coastal waters tonight.
Locally stronger winds can be expected near Santa Cruz especially
from the Coast Dairies through Pescadero region of the coast as
well as farther south near Point Sur. Northwest winds will
increase later tomorrow as a weak system passes to the north.
Winds will diminish Tuesday as high pressure builds off the
California coast. Generally light northwest swells with locally
steeper fresh swell.
