.SYNOPSIS...The marine layer has returned to the coast which will
lead to some coastal cooling today as onshore breezes pick up this
afternoon as a weak upper trough approaches. Wednesday will trend
slightly cooler inland as the upper trough passes. High pressure
begins to build Thursday leading to a warming trend into Friday.
Some gusty offshore winds are expected Friday night into Saturday
across the hills as a low drops into Nevada. Dry this weekend with
a cooling trend into Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 2:59 AM PDT Tuesday...1000 foot marine layer
has returned to the coast with Half Moon Bay and Monterey
reporting ceilings around 800 feet. Inland areas remain clear but
clouds are starting to form inside the Bay with 2.5 mb onshore
gradient. Synoptic pattern features an upper low well off the
coast which clearly shows up on water vapour. As has been depicted
for days now the nam model advances the main trough towards the
coast by this afternoon which should lead to a deepening marine
layer and overall cooling trend within about 10 miles of the
coast. Inland areas should enjoy another mild May afternoon with
highs into the 70s and lower 80s.
Gusty winds this evening near the coast and bay as onshore
gradients increase and the marine layer deepens, which should lead
to widespread low clouds by Wednesday morning. Weds still looks
like the coolest day of the week as the main trof axis passes
overhead.
Similar to the last trough its a little hard to gage if it will be
strong enough to wipe the marine inversion out by Thursday or low
clouds will linger over the ocean. Either way high pressure
returns by Thursday with temperatures trending back near or
slightly above normal.
By Friday a strong shortwave will drop towards northern Nevada
setting up a strong offshore pressure gradient. Some gusty winds
could should up in the Napa hills as early as Friday morning as
a pre-cursor type event. Latest runs now show the low slowing and
cutting off slightly versus a progressive drop into the Great
Basin. MOS guidance has cooled versus 24 hours ago but still
expect good downslope warming pattern with lots inland highs well
into the 80s and even some lower 90s by Friday afternoon with
mostly sunny skies.
Impact event worth monitoring will then be offshore winds on
Friday night. Models honing in on the 3-10z time frame Friday
night into early Saturday morning for gusts to 50 mph in the
north and east bay hills. This is climatologically favored as
night time inversions set up as well. Will issue a hazardous
weather outlook for now to raise awareness for potentially strong
winds across the north and east bay hills Friday night.
The weekend looks seasonably warm and dry Saturday with a modest
cooling trend by Sunday as the flow at the surface turns more
onshore.

.AVIATION...As of 10:35 PM PDT Monday...VFR except a few patches of
stratus and/or fog developing tonight along the coastline. Moderate
to high confidence VFR forecast Tuesday.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR, a few patches of stratus and/or fog
are possible by late evening and overnight. VFR is forecast for much
of Tuesday.

.MARINE...as of 02:21 AM PDT Tuesday...Breezy northwest winds with
generally light seas overall through the remainder of the
evening. The strongest winds will be along the coast,
particularly along and north of Point Reyes, along the Marin
headlands, from Pescadero to Coast Dairies along the Santa Cruz
coast, and along the Big Sur coast especially around Point Sur.
Locally steep wind driven fresh swell possible along these areas
with stronger winds. Gale force winds possible later this week.
