.SYNOPSIS...Dry and seasonably cool conditions will prevail through
the week, with periods of gusty winds and a few high clouds possible
at times. The colder valley locations may also see some patchy frost
during the late night and early morning hours.

.DISCUSSION...As of 9:53 PM PST Tuesday...A nearly stationary
closed 500 mb high center is located a little more than 1 thousand
miles to our southwest near 27N/136W. As northerly flow remains
nearly constant over the forecast area in the nearest term little
net change in 500 mb heights is forecast through Friday. Dry
weather from earlier today continues, 24 hour trends indicate
temperatures are a couple to several degrees cooler compared to
this time last evening. To add to this, recent model output is
struggling with how to handle the aforementioned closed high
center with indications it'll try to relocate to a higher latitude
while advancing slightly eastward late Friday night through the
weekend, placing it closer to the cwa and deflecting to the north
any near term chances of appreciable rainfall. Short segments of
polar jet stream energy rapidly undergo amplification entering the
western CONUS while upstream Pacific jet stream energy begins to
split on Friday offering very little to no confidence in location
or timing of weather features beyond 120 hours. If recalling
correctly the global models have generally trended less amplified,
less in the way of an unstable ridge scenario.

A mainly dry cold front is approx 700 miles to our northwest and
will quickly advance southeastward and become located south of our
cwa by late Wednesday night and Thursday morning; the front will
decelerate from 40 mph to 20 to 30 mph when passing over the cwa
based on ECMWF and GFS theta-e forecasts. Only the 00z NAM
forecasts very light qpf with a few hundredths of an inch over
interior Monterey and San Benito counties late Wednesday night and
Thursday morning. Not out of the question limited near surface
moisture could get swept up into the front causing an isolated
brief sprinkle or very light shower, however most places will be
dry. As the front decelerates theta-e values stretch longitudinally
possibly suggesting a shallowing of the frontal surface and
weakening vertical motion. Post cold frontal 850 mb temperatures
cool to 0C to 2C Thursday with lower level winds increasing, it'll
be breezy to blustery and feel much chillier especially by evening.

Cold air advection Thursday then lighter wind and a partly to mostly
clear sky Thursday night into Friday morning and Friday night into
Saturday morning sets the stage for near freezing to sub-freezing min
temperatures over typically colder and sheltered inland valleys;
dewpoint temperatures will be lowering in a mainly light offshore
wind flow characteristic of a continental influence for late week
and weekend. Lower confidence, but it appears chilly night and morning
temperatures could stick around into early next week including the
New Year holiday.

.AVIATION....as of 10:12 PM PST Tuesday...For 06z tafs. Clear
skies with VFR conditions overnight into Weds. Generally light
northerly winds at the sfc for the terminals with stronger winds
aloft.

.MARINE...as of 9:00 PM PST Tuesday...High pressure offshore with
low pressure over the interior will set up a strong pressure
gradient along the coast allowing moderate northerly winds to
persist through Friday. Gale force gusts will be possible at
times. The steady winds will produce fresh wind waves over a
moderate nw swell. Gradients are forecast to ease later Friday or
Saturday with lighter winds.
