.SYNOPSIS...Very warm conditions will persist inland today while
most coastal areas remain seasonably cool. A gradual cooling trend
is forecast for inland areas through much of the work week.
Monsoon moisture is forecast to increase across southern and
eastern California by midweek and perhaps make it as far west as
the Bay Area and Central Coast by Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 8:58 AM PDT Sunday...No updates needed this
morning. Skies are mostly clear except for some patchy clouds
along the coast that are already showing signs of mixing out.
Temps in the hills already in the 70s to lower 80s while the
valleys cooled into the 50s overnight with clear skies allowing
for radiational cooling. Expect another warm to hot day inland
with 90s for the interior valleys and even 100s for interior
Monterey/San Benito. There is a 1000 foot marine layer along the
coast with some onshore winds in place so relief will be felt
along the coast with 60s and 70s.
Day to day forecast changes remain subtle at best at least through
Tuesday with not much change in the synoptic pattern. By about
Weds inland areas may cool a few degrees closer to seasonable
norms. Perhaps the biggest item of interest this week will be to
monitor increasing monsoon moisture to our south as it slowly
inches closer to the Bay Area/Central Coast. Still not a high
probability of seeing t-storms around here but by Thursday the
deserts, Sierra and mountains to our north all should see
convection so its possible that one wave or perturbation in the
flow could bring some rogue activity our way. Will continue to
monitor.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 3:10 AM PDT Sunday...Early morning
temperatures are running as much as 6 degrees cooler compared to
the same time yesterday. Increased overnight cooling is likely
the result of decreased moisture in the atmosphere. The 00Z
Oakland sounding from yesterday afternoon had a precipitable water
value of 0.69", well below the 1.11" at OAK 24 hours earlier. A
cooler start this morning should mean slightly cooler temperatures
today in most areas, even though the temperature of the airmass
aloft is not forecast to change. Even with expected slight
cooling, the inland valleys and hills will remain very warm to hot
today. Potential Heat Risks today for our inland areas are
projected to be in the low to moderate categories with just a few
isolated high risk spots across our far southern inland areas.
Therefore, Heat Advisories will not be issued for today.
Early morning satellite imagery shows that a few areas of low
clouds and fog have developed overnight, mainly along the coasts
of Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. Do not expect
much in the way of inland development of fog and low clouds prior
to daybreak given that the marine layer at Fort Ord is currently
only about 1000 feet deep and onshore pressure gradients are not
terribly strong. Onshore flow is strong enough, however, to keep
most coastal areas seasonably cool today with highs mostly in the
60s and 70s. The exceptions will be the Santa Cruz County Coast
and Big Sur Coast where highs are forecast to be in the low to mid
80s.
Model guidance generally indicates gradual cooling for our inland
areas through much of the week ahead as the upper ridge over
southern California slowly weakens and shifts eastward. Even with
this projected downward drift in temperatures, the inland valleys
and hills will remain seasonably warm through the week.
As the ridge shifts eastward this week, the flow aloft over
California is forecast to gradually shift from southwest to
southeast. Southeasterly flow will advect monsoon moisture across
much of southern and eastern California by midweek, and perhaps as
far west as our forecast area by Thursday. If mid level moisture
increases as forecast by the models, and if mid-level
disturbances embedded in the southeasterly flow aloft drift over
our area, we could see development of high-based thunderstorms
later in the week and/or perhaps into next weekend. There is too
much uncertainty at this point to consider adding thunderstorm
chances to the forecast, but this will need to be monitored
closely as the week progresses.

.AVIATION...Updated at 10:32 AM PDT Sunday...For 18z TAFs.
Satellite imagery showing this morning's patchy stratus has
dissipated leaving clear skies across the region. VFR conditions
are expected to prevail through the period with the exception of
potential patchy stratus developing late tonight around the SF Bay
and Monterey Peninsula. Onshore winds will increase this
afternoon to around 10-15 kt with locally higher winds at KSFO.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR through the period. Possible stratus
development late tonight that could affect the terminal. Westerly
winds will increase again this afternoon, 20-25 kt, with gusts
near 30 kt through mid evening.
SFO Bridge Approach...similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions through the period with
possible MVFR/IFR cigs at KMRY late tonight into early tomorrow
morning. Generally light winds through the period, locally higher
this afternoon at KSNS.

.MARINE...as of 08:36 AM PDT Sunday...Gusty northwest winds will
continue across the coastal waters through mid week as the
pressure gradient along the California coast strengthens.
Strongest winds are expected between Monday and Tuesday during
which time sustained gale-force winds will be possible along the
Big Sur coast. Gale-force gusts will be possible elsewhere for
the waters north of Pigeon Point starting Monday afternoon. Winds
will diminish by Wednesday as the pressure gradient weakens. A
weak low is then forecast to develop over the waters late this
week, resulting in generally light and variable winds. Moderate
to strong winds through mid week will generate steep wind waves
resulting in hazardous sea conditions, especially for smaller
vessels. Light to moderate swells are forecast through the
period.
