as high as 30 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting
snow. The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause
frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means periods
of snow and blowing snow will cause primarily travel
difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited
visibilities, and use caution while driving. The latest road
conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by
calling 5 1 1.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Missoula, MT wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Feb 16, 3:50 AM MST, 11 hours 3 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 16, 3:50 AM MST, 11 hours 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Missoula MT
350 AM MST Fri Feb 16 2018

*** MAJOR WINTER STORM FOR CENTRAL IDAHO AND NORTHWEST MONTANA
 THIS WEEKEND ***

.DISCUSSION...The big deal in the forecast remains the significant
snow storm in the Northern Rockies this weekend. Today the snow
starts to pick up across the region with a few inches expected
before the onslaught begins on Saturday.

Northwest Montana north of Interstate-90 will see the heaviest
snow on Saturday with even valley locations expected to receive
8-12 inches in 24 hours. The higher elevations of central Idaho
will see similar or greater snow amounts, as well. South of the
interstate, warm air will intrude from the south causing a wetter
and more dense snow and even rain in the Bitterroot Valley, so
forecast amounts there are much less.

By Saturday night, a strong push of cold arctic air causes east
winds to pick up and blow 30-40 mph at times. The colder air mass
in place over northwest Montana means that much of the snow will
be less dense and more available to blow around when these strong
winds start. The Highway 2 corridor from West Glacier over Marias
Pass will see blizzard conditions for at least a few hours, if not
for several hours. Almost all of northwest Montana will have
problems with blowing and drifting snow, making travel difficult
to impossible Saturday night.

As the arctic penetrates farther south on Sunday and reaches the
Missoula and Bitterroot areas, it will encounter a denser snow
pack due to the warmer temperatures during the day. Therefore,
while blowing snow will still be a possibility, it is expected to
be much less of an impact.

Otherwise, some snow is expected everywhere from Grangeville in
central Idaho to Butte in southwest Montana throughout this
weekend period.

Cold, northerly flow will persist Monday into Tuesday, allowing
light snow showers to linger across the area. Temperatures will
remain well below normal, especially for Tuesday and Wednesday
mornings as the winds and showers decrease. Then, a stronger
shortwave associated with abundant moisture and another round of
colder air will return late Wednesday into Thursday, resulting in
more widespread accumulating snowfall across the Northern
Rockies.

&&

.AVIATION...A strong jet stream nosing into northwest Montana
today will support some snow showers today. Low ceilings and snow
showers will affect terminals KGPI and KMSO primarily, with some
showers in the vicinity of terminals KBTM and KSMN. Terminal KGPI
will be the first to be affected with snow starting in the late
morning between 15 and 16Z. Terminal KMSO will mostly be affected
in the afternoon and evening. Snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches
are expected.

A major winter storm is likely in western Montana Saturday and
Sunday, starting with moderate to heavy snow and gusty west winds,
before becoming much colder with gusty easterly winds, and blowing
snow with an arctic front.
