.DISCUSSION...A continuous fetch of relatively milder and moist
air moving over the area has resulted in widespread snowfall this
morning. Snow-covered roads with slick conditions can be expected
from central Idaho into western Montana until late this morning.
Snow levels will be rising today, so that may cause a few places
over central Idaho and northwest Montana experience a brief period
of freezing rain mixed with snow. A break in the precipitation
will occur by this afternoon and temperatures will warm above
freezing in many valley locations.
A second round of precipitation is expected to occur by this
evening lasting into Sunday. Mountain passes will have moderate to
heavy snow at times while some valley locations will see rain or a
mixture with snowfall, only to see snow by Sunday morning. The
snow will combine with strong westerly winds, which could gust
into the 40-50 mph range causing blowing snow. Valleys will see
much less precipitation and milder conditions initially then will
see a chance for snowfall by Sunday. The winter storm watches for
the higher elevations could be upgraded to warnings later this
morning, so stay tuned! Strong gusty winds near or over 40 mph are
possible across west-central Mondatana to Lemhi County Sunday
morning with the cold front passage.
Snow showers will continue through Sunday evening under a
northerly flow behind the cold front. Little impacts beyond a few
inches of snow in the mountains are expected.
A few dry days are expected Monday through Wednesday under a weak
ridge of high pressure. Depending on cloud cover, the fresh snow
and radiative cooling will aid temps lowering into the single
digits to lower teens each morning. Lower valley fog can also be
expected each morning and may bring travel impacts.
A warmer air mass will begin to raise temps to above normal into
the mid and upper 30s next Thu-Sat. A weak weather disturbance is
epxected to impact northwest Montana late next week day however
confidence is pretty low for any major winter storm or winter impacts.

.AVIATION...Widespread snow is occurring and will continue across
central Idaho and western Montana at least through 29/1800Z. There
may be a quick lull in precipitation this afternoon before the
bulk of precipitation moves over the region after 30/0000Z. As
precipitation becomes more showery in nature this afternoon,
winds will begin to increase significantly at ridge top level,
causing increased concern for turbulence. Mountain obscuration
with varying ceilings from precipitation are expected through the
weekend.
