.DISCUSSION...Isolated snow showers will continue to move from
the southwest to the northeast across the Northern Rockies for the
rest of the Thanksgiving afternoon. Later this evening, and
overnight, a weak shortwave of energy will bring widespread light
snow to western Montana and north-central Idaho through Friday
morning. Most of the valleys will only see light accumulations of
less than one inch. The valleys that have the best chance for
higher accumulations will be along Highway 83 through the
Seeley/Swan, US-2 from Columbia Falls to West Glacier and then
along the North Fork towards Polebridge. These locations could
stand to pick up 1 to 3 inches. The mountains and mountain passes,
will see up to 4 to 6 inches by morning. So those planning to
travel home tomorrow, expect areas of snowcovered roads. However
this will just be a small taste to what we expect to impact the
region Friday night.
A tightening southerly pressure gradient ahead of the shortwave
tonight is a favorable pattern for gusty southerly winds in the
Grangeville area of Idaho. Winds gusting up to 45mph in the
overnight hours is likely and are then forecast to diminish
before sunrise.
Forecast models have changed little with regards to the overall
meteorology associated with Friday night's winter storm. However,
the geographic placement of the best forcing has become a bit
more varied with each model showing shifts both north (ECMWF) and
south (GFS/NAM/SREF) from previous forecast thinking. This is
likely due to the latest models showing a much less consolidated
system aloft and subsequently producing a weaker, more broad area
of low pressure near the surface. Thus, overall we didn't make
too many significant adjustments to the forecast with only some
modest tweaks coming in places where confidence is higher in the
analysis.
The changes: We upgraded the Winter Storm Watches to Warnings for
the Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains (Lolo & Lost Trail Pass)
as well as the Lower Clark Fork Region (Lookout Pass). These
locations are expected to receive steady light snow from Friday
evening through Saturday afternoon that will be compounded by
several hours of heavy snow between 11 PM MST and 5 AM MST. Anyone
traveling on I-90, US-12 and US-93 leading up to and over these
passes will undoubtedly encounter periods of heavy snow, reduced
visibility and slower than normal travel.
We expanded the Winter Weather Advisory to now cover the Mission
Valley. It also includes the Flathead Valley, but accumulations
north of Polson will be notably lower (1 to 2 inches) than those
experienced southward across the Mission Valley and the vast
majority of the Flathead Reservation (3 to 6 inches). In Idaho we
added an Advisory above 3000 feet for Grangeville, Cottonwood, the
Camas Prairie, Greer Grade and White Bird Grade. Here
precipitation may begin as rain Friday evening, but the passage of
a strong cold front will quickly change things over to snow with
accumulations ranging between 2 and 4 inches. Gusty west winds
behind the front are likely to produce periods of reduced
visibility due to blowing snow.
Elsewhere the Winter Weather Advisories all seem to still be
appropriate and additional details for accumulation totals can be
found by visiting our website weather.gov/missoula. In general,
accumulations of 2 to 4, locally up to 6 inches are expected in
most places with upwards of a foot in higher elevation communities
such as Georgetown Lake. All models support intense snow showers
continuing into Saturday morning before slowly tapering off during
the afternoon.
After a short break in the weather for Sunday and Monday another
active pattern will setup over the Northern Rockies Tuesday
through the rest of the week. At this time snowlevels are
expected to be at mountain pass levels or above, with no valley
impacts from snow expected.

.AVIATION...Isolated snow showers will continue to move from
the southwest to the northeast across the Northern Rockies for the
rest of the Thanksgiving afternoon. Locations across northwest
Montana, including KGPI will continue to see areas of freezing fog
and low stratus lowering visibility down to less than one half
mile at times. The fog in these areas should diminish and lift my
sunset this evening. A weak shortwave of energy will bring
widespread light snowfall to all of the Northern Rockies after
23/0600Z including all aviation sites, through early morning
Friday. Only light accumulations, less than one inch is expected.
Low hanging clouds and freezing fog (especially near bodies of
water), will once again lower visibility for KGPI and KMSO through
mid morning.
