Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...Snow showers are intensifying in eastern OR/WA this
afternoon with a passage a frontal feature. These moderate to
heavy snow showers are expected to move through north-central
Idaho and west-central Montana during this afternoon and linger
into the evening. Winds are still a factor in the Camas Prairie
and the heavy snow showers are likely to add to the poor
conditions so the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect. Snow
will taper off for most late this evening with a brief break into
early Sunday morning.

Our next winter storm still looks on track to begin to impact all
of the Northern Rockies during the day tomorrow. The higher
terrain of western Montana and north-central Idaho should see
periods of moderate to heavy snow for most of the day tomorrow,
with up to a foot or more of snow possible. Strong winds at the
ridge tops will likely downslope much of the broader valleys, such
as the Missoula/Bitterroot and Mission/Flathead Valleys for most
of the day. This will limit some of the potential snowfall amounts
for those locations. After the front passes in the late afternoon
and evening, conditions are expected to aide in the development
of snow bands. This is the period where the valleys in western
Montana, mentioned above, will see their higher chances for
accumulating snow. Generally, 3 to 5 inches of snow are expected
for the valleys of western Montana and north-central Idaho. Those
that are under one of the snow bands should see higher amounts.

Also, for those in the Camas Prairie of north-central Idaho. We do
expect gusty southwesterly winds up to 50 mph to develop in the
morning, then turning more westerly in the afternoon and slightly
lessening. In reaction to the winds, blowing and drifting snow
will be a concern for another day tomorrow. Low visibility and
slick roads could create hazardous driving conditions for a period
of time along Highway 95 from Grangeville to Cottonwood, and up to
Whitebird Hill.

Snow will become more showery in nature by Monday morning,
however, the morning commute could still be slow going from
previous snowfall the previous day.

Much of the region will see a break in the snow during the day on
Tuesday, before another storm system moves in by Wednesday and
Thursday. The details remain a little murky at this time, though
it's safe to say another round of light snow accumulations for the
valleys and moderate snow for the mountains are likely.

.AVIATION...Low pressure centered in southeast WA and an
associated frontal feature will spread moderate to heavy snow
showers through north-central Idaho and west-central Montana
during the afternoon and into the evening. Visibility and ceilings
will be quite variable through this evening under the showers
through the evening. Showers will linger in the terrain but a
brief break in snow in snow is expected into the early morning
hours before the next weather system moves into the region. The
weather system for Sunday will pack more wind and moisture than
today's. Initially the terrain and southerly wind prone areas
(Grangeville, Hamilton, and Deer Lodge) will see gusty winds but
these winds are expected to mix down to most everyone during the
afternoon. Mountain and passes are expected to see moderate to
heavy snow for much of the day. Intense showers are forecast to to
organize into snow bands during the afternoon and evening so
valley locations will also have periods of moderate to heavy snow
during the afternoon and evening.
