...Hefty Mountain Snow Expected Thursday into Friday...
.DISCUSSION...The arctic air continues to seep over the mountain
passes around Glacier National Park this morning. The air is
currently making its way into West Glacier, westerly winds in the
Flathead valley will hinder the westerly progression of the arctic
air. Winter weather advisory continue for Glacier park for the
combination of light to moderate snowfall, low wind chill readings
and potential of blowing snow. Highway 83 up the Seeley/Swan can
expected moderate to heavy snow through this morning especially
around Condon. Travelers over MacDonald and Homestake passes
should anticipate wintry conditions as the area will experience
light to moderate snow through the morning.
The shower activity will decrease in intensity later this
afternoon and through the overnight hours, but the higher terrain
along the Montana/Idaho border and Glacier park will have
lingering light showers.
The plume of subtropical moisture is still on track to move
through the Northern Rockies Thursday and Thursday night. This
moisture will bring a substantial amount of precipitation to the
region as snow levels steadily rise. Many valley locations will
start off as heavy wet snow Thursday morning before transitioning
over to rain by the afternoon. The exception will be extreme
northwest Montana. The latest model runs indicate areas north of
highway 2 should remain snow throughout this whole event, this
includes the Yaak/Eureka area, Kalispell and Glacier Park. While
most valleys could receive 1 to 3 inches of snow, the extreme
northwest Montana valleys could experience 4 to 9 inches of new
snow. The mountains along the Montana/Idaho border and Glacier
Park down into the Bob Marshall region are still on track to
receive 1 to 2 feet of new snow. Winter Storm watches have been
expanded into these regions.
The upper level flow becomes northwesterly Friday keeping
widespread showers lingering across the region. The intensity of
these showers will be dramatically less compared to the
precipitation rates expected for Thursday and Thursday night.
Snow showers will gradually decease Friday night through the day
on Saturday, as the ridge of high pressure moves east over the
region. By the end of the day Sunday going into Monday, the ridge
will be overhead, which should allow for valley inversions to
begin to develop. The inversions are not anticipated to become
overly strong, as a trough of low pressure begins to erode the
high by mid week. More mountain snow and a rain/snow mix will
accompany this disturbance during the day next Wednesday.
Yet, another very wet weather disturbance will move into the
Pacific Northwest by the end of next week, that will bring more
mountain snow. It's too early to tell whether this means more
valley snow at this time.

.AVIATION...A weak disturbance continues to move through the
Northern Rockies today causing widespread shower activity. Snow
levels have been running around 4000 feet. KBTM will be impacted
by snow this morning while the remainder of the terminals are
anticipated primarily receive rain or a rain/snow mix today. An
arctic airmass is pushing into the Glacier park this morning, but
will have difficult making it to KGPI. Shower intensity will
decrease tonight, then a more significant weather system will
impact the Northern Rockies on Thursday.
