.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 506 AM EST WED JAN 10 2018

WV imagery and RAP analysis indicated a low amplitude pattern with a
mid/upper level trough into the wrn CONUS and a flat downstream
ridge into the Great Lakes. A vigorous southern stream low was
moving through AZ. At the sfc, southerly flow had increased across
the region ahead of a trough from nw Ontario through the cntrl
Dakotas. As a result, low level moisture, also aided by flow off
of Lake Michigan, has also spread into the area with low clouds
through much of the cntrl cwa. Otherwise, mainly mid/high clouds
were observed over most of nrn Wi and wrn Upper Michigan.

Today, expect low level moisture/clouds to expand across most of
Upper Michigan today, except where downsloping winds prevail. A weak
shortwave trough will move through Upper Michigan but is not
expected to provide minimal support for any pcpn given a prominent
900-700 mb dry layer. The potential for some light fzdz/dz remains,
especially over the east half with the greater moisture available
from Lake Michigan.

Tonight, expect that that a band or bands of pcpn will develop late
supported by mid level fgen and the associated right entrance of a
250-300 mb jet streak into nrn Ontario. The snow possibly mixed with
fzra would mainly affect the far west late, btwn 09z-12z. Otherwise
some light pcpn is likely over the rest of the area late supported
by low level isentropic lift. overall QPF will be light, aob 0.05
inch over most of the area. Temps remaining in the mid 30s should
keep the pcpn as ra/dz. Areas of fog, possibly dense should also
develop as the moist air moves over the snowpack.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 433 AM EST WED JAN 10 2018

Thursday-Thursday Ngt: Developing system will be nudging closer to
the Upper Peninsula early Thur morning. Warm/Moist air will continue
to advect north across the melting snowpack, likely resulting in
areas of fog ahead of the cold front. With the absence of stronger
vertical lift within the shallow column, expect some patchy drizzle.
Mid-lvl heights will steadily tumble by mid-morning Thur, with a
developing 850mb low poised to lift northeast from LaCrosse
Wisconsin towards the Western U.P. There has been some
inconsistencies within the path of the 850mb low, which is the
favored region in which we would see a deformation zone develop.
Once the surface front slips east, the column will cool and support
precip transitioning to all snow. This will also cause the high temp
for Thur to occur either at or around daybreak. Given the dynamics
associated with this system, a period of moderate snow is likely
during the day Thur and generally leaning between 21Z Thur - 09Z
Fri. But based on the aforementioned wobble effect to the path of
the system, confidence remains a challenge. There is some agreement
that snowfall totals will likely be just under warning criteria;
however, could see a few locations flirt with warning criteria in
the 12hr timeframe before transitioning to Lake Effect Snow.

500mb trough axis pivots east across the U.P. Fri morning, with
winds turning northerly and setting up some good LES bands for
Eastern Marquette County and likely Alger County. Potent thermal
trough arrives Fri as well, and will return the arctic airmass and
lock temps in the single digits above zero for both Fri-Sun. Winds
begin to relax later in the weekend, which should result in less
coverage for LES.

Late in the weekend into early next week guidance is sliding a
shortwave south across the Southern Great Lakes; however, there is
indications that some type of a weak meso-low will form late Sun
into Mon over Lake Superior and could produce additional LES for
portions of Central/Eastern U.P. Temps will continue to be in the
single digits to low teens early next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 1248 PM EST WED JAN 10 2018

KIWD: Increasing low-level moisture will give way to LIFR ceilings
this evening before more widespread precip starts overnight. Precip
will begin as rain, but quickly transition to FZRA then to snow late
tonight into Thu. morning. A narrow band of heavy snow is expected
to set-up across far western Upper MI Thu. morning, likely affecting
the terminal.

KCMX: LIFR ceilings will gradually develop through the night. Precip
will transition from RA to SN overnight. Moderate to possibly heavy
snow with gusty north winds may allow visibility to drop to 1/4SM by
late Thu. morning.

KSAW: LIFR ceiling and visibility will be the main concern through
the period, with intermittent 1/4SM vis not out of the question
