evening. 

* WIND AND WAVES DURING THE SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY...Expect 
  sustained winds of up to 19 knots from the west, with gusts up 
  to 24 knots. The largest expected significant waves will be 4 
  feet with a maximum wave height of up to 6 feet possible. 

* TIMING...The maximum winds are expected around 6 PM EST 
  Saturday with the largest waves expected around 4 PM EST 
  Saturday.

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)

...Wintry mix of freezing drizzle and lake effect snow showers
possible across the west late tonight through Saturday morning...

A surface low slowly tracked northeast across northern Minnesota
today, with its associated warm front pushing northward across Upper
Michigan this afternoon and cold front pushing east-southeast across
western Minnesota. Across the warm sector down in eastern Wisconsin
and far southern Upper Michigan a fairly widespread area of rain
showers has blossomed along the leading edge of the the 850-700mb
moisture transport axis. Where skies remained mostly clear today,
temperatures soared into the low to mid 40s.

As the main axis of the above mentioned moisture transport continues
to lift northeast, expect south central and eastern Upper Michigan
to get clipped by the developing and ongoing rain showers. Given the
elevated nature of these rain showers and the dry sub-cloud layer,
do not expect much in the way of rainfall accumulations. As the warm
sector remains firmly anchored across much of the area tonight,
locations that did not see much warming, mainly across the central
and east will see the development of lower clouds and possibly the
return of fog overnight. Overnight lows will be tricky tonight as
they will heavily depend on a combination of radiational cooling and
the arrival of the cold front. Behind the front, temperatures will
drop around or below freezing, mainly across the west and central
portions of Upper Michigan by daybreak on Saturday.

Late tonight into early Saturday morning, as the cold front and main
upper-level wave approaches from the west drizzle ahead of the front
will likely expand across much of the area. Forecast soundings show
a sharp transition to cold air advection in the low-levels, which
will support drizzle transitioning over to freezing drizzle mainly
across the Keweenaw where westerly post-frontal flow will maximized
low-level lift. Forecast soundings are showing a lack of cloud ice,
but if temperatures near the cloud top level cool a degree or two
more we could see freezing drizzle transition over to and/or mix
with snow showers.

Through the day on Saturday, precipitation will switch over to lake
effect snow across the west wind snow belts, mainly across the
Keweenaw. Expect these snow showers to remain light, but towards the
end of the day they will begin to pick up in intensity as colder air
works into the region, pushing thermal profiles and lift into the
DGZ. As the cold front continues to push eastward through the day on
Saturday and the cold air advection increases, especially later in
the day, expect high temperatures to occur fairly early in the day
with either stagnant or falling temperatures throughout the day.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

.. A return to cold and lake effect snow on tap...

A secondary cold front will pass through Upper Michigan Saturday
evening and into Sunday morning leading to falling temperatures
during the day on Sunday. There is an increasing signal (especially
among the high resolution guidance) that the majority of the Lake
Superior shore will get in on a "snow squally" feature along the
leading edge of the cold front accompanied by a brief period of
moderate snow and gusty winds. A quick 1-3" of snow look possible
overnight into Sunday morning with the highest accumulations
expected within the counties bordering Lake Superior.

Light lake effect snow showers will continue across the N/NW wind
snow belts Sunday through Monday night with somewhat meager lift
limiting significant accumulations. However, an uptick in intensity
is possible Monday morning as a shortwave trough passes overhead.
There is a wee bit of concern for a brief period of moderate to
heavy snow across eastern Upper Michigan Monday evening as 850 mb
temperatures drop below -20 C coinciding with strong low- level
lift. Such a scenario will become better defined in the coming
days.

Lake effect snow will come to an end late Monday night and into
Tuesday as low level winds quickly back southwesterly in response to
a building ridge over the western Great Lakes. Clearing clouds will
promote temperatures to drop to the below zero (single digits) early
Tuesday morning, especially close to the Wisconsin state line.

A clipper system will pass through the area Tuesday night and into
Wednesday bringing a chance of light snow across all of Upper
Michigan. Southerly flow off Lake Michigan may lead to
appreciable enhancement to snowfall intensity across the east,
though the progressive nature of the system may limit overall
accumulations. Interested parties are encouraged to stay up to
date on the forecast.

Wednesday and beyond, lake effect snow will increase markedly
across the NW wind belts as an arctic airmass settles into the
region. While it is too early to get into the details, current
indications are that we may pick up from where we left off in
early January with below average highs and lows with daily
bouts of appreciable lake effect snow.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)

Expect KSAW IFR ceilings to scatter out early this afternoon.
Elsewhere, VFR ceilings and visibilities have prevailed and will
continue to do so through the rest of the afternoon. With low-
level winds around 2000ft AGL cranking around 40 to 50 knots, low-
level wind shear remains possible at KCMX and KIWD today. This
focus for low-level wind shear will shift eastward over KSAW
tonight. Winds will veer from the south to west through this TAF
period, with gusty winds at times.

Tonight through Saturday morning a weak cold front will push east
across Upper Michigan. This will bring chances for lower
ceilings/visibilities with patchy drizzle ahead of the front
tonight, then transitioning to a mix of freezing drizzle and snow
showers across the western most terminals. Opted to lead with
prevailing snow showers for now, but if confidence increases in the
main precipitation type being predominately freezing drizzle this
will warrant prevailing mentions.

There will be a brief lull in gales this tonight as surface trough
pushes east across Lake Superior. Ahead of the surface trough,
especially over eastern Lake Superior southerly gales to 35 knots
are expected through tonight. Winds will veer westerly and increase
to gales of 35 to 40 knots on Saturday. To cover both events, opted
to expand and extend the current gale headlines through Saturday
afternoon/evening. Winds will relax to 15 to 25 knots Sunday through
early next week. Another round of southerly gales are possible
Tuesday night through Wednesday.

...WINTRY MIX POSSIBLE ACROSS THE WEST SATURDAY MORNING...

As a cold front pushes eastward across Upper Michigan, patchy
freezing drizzle is possible late tonight through Saturday
morning. At times, light snow showers may mix with the freezing
drizzle. A light glaze of ice is possible, especially on elevated
surfaces such as trees and bridges, mainly along the western
shore of Lake Superior and across the higher terrain in the
Keweenaw.
