...Light to moderate n-nw wind lake effect snow to continue into Sat
morning with small snowflakes resulting in poor visibility at
times...
Persistent Arctic airmass with -24C to -27C 850 mb temps flowing
over the Great Lakes continues to promote lake induced troughing
from the Lower Great Lakes northwest into the Upper Great Lakes.
Land breezes over Ontario resulting in the sharpest troughing over
south central Lake Superior. The enhanced low-level convergence
along this trough is focusing light to moderate lake effect snow
bands into north central Upper Michigan with northwest to north
winds. GOES-16 satellite imagery and observations indicate
additional light lake effect snow over much of western Upper
Michigan into northern Wisconsin. Inversions continue around 5-6kft
AGL over eastern Lake Superior per KMQT VAD wind profile and model
fcst soundings and around 3-4kft over the west. Despite disorganized
and splotchy appearance of les bands on radar reflectivity, 12-hour
snow amounts have generally been 1-2 inches west and 1 to locally 4
inches north central. Another big driving hazard last few days has
been poor visibility due to small snowflake size with the DGZ being
squashed at or near sfc of the lake.
With inversion heights and winds changing very little through and no
enhancement expected from any shortwaves to intensify any of the les
bands, would expect similar 12-hour snow accumulations of 1-2 inches
west and 1 to locally 4 inches east to continue. Enhanced low-level
convergence from land breezes should continue to focus heavier snow
accumulations into far eastern Marquette and western Alger counties
tonight. For this reason and along with expected sharply reduced
visibilities from smaller snowflakes, winter weather advisories
still look good through tonight for Marquette-Alger and northern
Schoolcraft counties. As winds continue to back wnw late tonight
into Sat morning, expect les bands to push e of Marquette County,
but continued strong low-level convergence into Alger and possibly
northern Schoolcraft could warrant extension of advisory headline
into Sat morning for those counties.
Given that winds are expected to be light and back a bit more
westerly, expect colder min temp readings tonight over the western
interior possibly dropping to around -20F in some locations. Where
lake effect snow lingers, temperatures will likely stay around or
just below zero. With winds expected to decrease well blo 10 mph,
not expecting to issue any wind chill headlines tonight.
Saturday, LES with lake induced convergent nw winds over eastern
Lake Superior could produce a few more inches of snow accumulation
into locations from mainly east of Marquette to Munising and Grand
Marais during the morning. Lingering LES will end in the afternoon
as the sfc ridge pushes east of the area and sw winds push les
offshore.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

Upper pattern will begin to undergo some transitions during the
extended forecast. As the western ridge/eastern upper trough de-
amplify the overall pattern will become more progressive allowing
for a break from the recent harsh cold.
Before these wholesale changes occur one last clipper will dive
southeastward across the Upper Lakes Saturday night into Sunday.
Antecedent airmass will be pretty dry and not a lot of
moisture/forcing with the system so only looking at 1-2 inches
(lowest west...highest east) of system snow during the Saturday
night into early Sunday period. Low level winds will become
southwesterly enough for some lake enhancement off Lake Michigan
over eastern Schoolcraft/Luce counties with 85H temps still in the -
10 to -14C range. Added enhancement may add a couple additional
inches to snowfall there and may have to contemplate an advisory as
the event gets closer.
The weather for Monday and Tuesday looks pretty tranquil for most.
However...with temperatures climbing well into the 20s most roads
that are currently hard packed with snow will begin to transition to
slush (especially as they are treated). Thus, travel could still be
a little treacherous despite the lack of precipitation. Slight
cooling behind low pressure moving across far northern Ontario into
Quebec will allow marginal delta T's for light lake effect for west
northwest snow belts Monday and Tuesday but not looking at any
substantial accumulations.
Wednesday should be the warmest day of the week as warm advection
kicks in ahead of southern stream system ejecting out into the
Plains. Most locations will see highs approach or even surpass
freezing for the first time and quite awhile.
Late week guidance offering varying solutions as next brief surge of
arctic air catches up to Pacific system moving into the lower Lakes.
It will be something to monitor over the next several days but too
much variation to provide many details at this time.
Long range for mid-January and beyond still favors a milder pattern
with only brief intrusions of arctic air into the Upper Lakes.

Lake effect snow will continue to impact all terminals into early
evening, but should start to gradually diminish at KIWD and KSAW
tonight into early Saturday as winds back a bit more westerly.
Ceilings will mostly be MVFR with IFR/MVFR visibilities at times
in snow and blowing snow. Given the nature of lake effect there
will be some variations in conditions ranging from IFR to
occasionally even VFR, especially out west through the day today.

The combination of strong northerly winds 20 to 30 knots and the
lingering Arctic air mass will allow for heavy freezing spray to
continue into early Saturday morning over central and eastern
portions of Lake Superior. This weekend, winds will briefly subside
from west to east Saturday morning to around 10 to 15 knots as high
pressure slides over the region. However, the winds will pick back
up late Saturday through the first half of Sunday as the next system
track across central Canada, with gale force winds of 35 to 40 knots
expected Saturday night into Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon,
winds will subside to 20 to 30 knots and linger through Monday
night. We could see another brief lull in wind speeds on Tuesday,
but by Tuesday night into Wednesday, winds will be on the increase,
up to 30 knots over the east half of Lake Superior.
