.A significant winter storm Friday night into Saturday evening
could include all precipitation types, strong winds, and blizzard
conditions. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Friday night and
Saturday.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop late Thursday
night and persist for much of the day Friday as temperatures
remain in the mid to upper 30s. Colder air will begin to move in
Friday evening, changing the precipitation to snow across central
and western Minnesota. In addition to the heavy snow, strong
winds gusting between 40 to 50 mph will bring the possibility of
blizzard conditions to west central Minnesota. The best chance
for whiteouts will be late Friday night there. The rain will turn
to a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow across south
central and east central Minnesota, and west central Wisconsin
Friday evening, before changing to all snow Saturday.

Total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are possible across
central and west central Minnesota, with totals tapering off to
3 or 4 inches across south central Minnesota and west central
Wisconsin. Total ice and sleet accumulations of two tenths to 
three tenths of an inch are possible across south central 
Minnesota and west central Wisconsin, with amounts tapering off to

BEGINNING LATE FRIDAY...

.A significant winter storm will develop Friday afternoon and 
continue into Saturday evening. All precipitation types, strong 
winds, and blizzard conditions will occur in this winter storm. A
Blizzard Warning is in effect Friday night through Saturday
evening for portions of west central Minnesota. A Winter Storm 
Watch remains in effect for late Friday through Saturday for the
rest of the area.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late tonight, 
and persist for much of the day Friday as temperatures remain in 
the mid 30s in central Minnesota to the lower 40s along the 
Minnesota/Iowa border. Colder air will begin to move into central
Minnesota Friday afternoon and evening, changing the precipitation
to snow. In addition to the heavy snow, strong gusty winds of 40 
to 50 mph will bring blizzard conditions to west central Minnesota.
The best chance for whiteouts will be late Friday night across 
west central Minnesota. The rain will turn to a wintry mix of 
freezing rain, sleet, and snow across south central and east 
central Minnesota, and west central Wisconsin Friday evening, 
before changing to all snow by Saturday morning.

Total snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches are expected from 
west central and southwest Minnesota to east central Minnesota and
northern Wisconsin, with totals nearing 18 inches possible. 
Totals will taper off to 4 or 7 inches across south central 
Minnesota and across Douglas eastward to Morrison counties. In
addition, total ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch
are possible across the southern third of Minnesota into west 
central Wisconsin.

winds, and blizzard conditions will occur in this winter storm. A
Blizzard Warning is in effect tonight through Saturday evening
for west central and south central Minnesota. A Winter Storm
Warning is in effect for most of east central and a portion of
south central Minnesota and all of west central Wisconsin. St
Cloud, the Twin Cities, Mankato and Albert Lea are included in
the warning. As well as Rice Lake, Ladysmith and Eau Claire
Wisconsin. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas north
of the warning areas.

Heavy snow will begin this evening. In addition to the heavy 
snow, strong gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph will bring blizzard 
conditions to western and central Minnesota. The best chance for 
whiteouts will be late Friday night across west central Minnesota.
A wintry mix is expected across east central Minnesota, and west 
central Wisconsin Friday evening, before changing to all snow by 
Saturday morning.

Total snow accumulations of 8 to 15 inches are expected from west
central and southwest Minnesota to east central Minnesota and
northern Wisconsin, with totals nearing 18 inches possible across
southwest Minnesota. Totals will taper off to 4 to 8 inches
across south central Minnesota. There will likely be a sharp 
gradient north of the heavy snow band. In addition, total sleet
and ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch are 
possible across the southern third of Minnesota into west central

Issued at 414 AM CDT Wed Apr 11 2018

System that will impact the area today is coming across the Rockies,
with a broad area of moisture and cold cloud tops showing up on
satellite imagery moving out across the High Plains. Primary forcing
for this wave will be strong isentropic lift centered near the 300k
surface. Main question for pops is how quickly we will we moisten
what will initially be a very dry atmosphere below 10k feet. For
pops, followed a blend of the short term models, which is faster
with bringing the precip in than a blend of the deterministic
models. This resulted in a rapid increase in pops across the entire
area between 20z and 00z. Continued with this short term model blend
to carry a NW to SE oriented band of precip east across eastern
MN/western WI through the evening. Through the duration of the
event, thermal profiles look warm enough to keep p-type as
predominately rain across the entire MPX area, so did cut back on
what little snow accumulations we had across central MN. In
addition, we did add a mention of thunder during the early evening
down along the I-90 corridor. During the evening, a surface low is
expected to strengthen as it moves across northern IA. The NAM shows
the strongest isentropic lift occurring north of this surface low
and SPC HREF probabilities are highlighting a thunderstorm threat
down there as well, so there's enough support for thunder occurring
to include it in the grids, though thunder probabilities look much
better later in the evening from southeast MN into southern WI.

In the wake of this precipitation tonight, we lose mid/upper level
moisture, but NAM forecast soundings in particular show the boundary
layer remaining saturated in the wake of the precip.  This means
we'll see one of two things likely develop behind the precip, dense
fog or low stratus. Though surface winds look light, there looks to
be enough shear in the boundary layer where the stratus scenario
looks more likely than the fog scenario.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

The main forecast concerns in the long term continue to revolve
around precipitation types and amounts associated with the potent
system lifting into the central CONUS.

There have been rather notable changes over the last 24 hours with
this system. The surface low track looks to slip south faster,
and the trough is not negatively tilted. These factors could limit
snowfall potential. Furthermore, soundings across the
southeastern third of the forecast area are also taking on the
appearance of a freezing rain look for Friday night into Saturday
morning. However, confidence isn't high given surface temps are
hovering right around the freezing mark, and 1-2 degrees could
change the outcome entirely. Still have a swath of 6-12 inches
(mostly accumulating between Friday evening and Saturday
afternoon) along a line from west central MN (Montevideo) toward
Mora, but confidence for a Winter Storm Watch is not quite there
yet.

Prior to the wintry precipitation, there looks to be a fairly
decent thunder potential on Thursday night as far north as the
I-94 corridor. We don't have the instability to warrant any
concern for severe weather, but we could certainly see elevated
rainfall amounts from convection (as illustrated by QPF progs over
southwest MN from 06z-12Z Friday).

Winds will also be screaming on Saturday, with sustained speeds in
the 25-35 mph range with gusts to 45 mph (the highest from west
into south central MN). These speeds are more GFS-weighted, so if
the weaker/more southerly track verify winds would be lighter.

Sunday snow looks to linger over west central WI, where several
additional inches could accumulate.

After this system passes, cool and drier conditions are expected
for the beginning of the upcoming week.

western MN and expand eastward this evening. Cigs will lower with
the rain and could reach IFR levels after the rain ends later this
evening. Cigs should rise again Thursday morning.

KMSP...Rain should push in about 01Z, and may not last too long
before ending. Confidence is low with how low cigs go tonight, but
some instances of IFR could occur.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

A powerful storm system will bring a chance for thunderstorms and
heavy rainfall on Thursday night and Friday, followed by a period
of a wintry mix on Friday night before eventually changing over
to accumulating snow through Saturday. Freezing rain with minor
ice accumulations appears possible with the wintry mix on Friday
night into Saturday morning, primarily from south central to east
central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin. Additionally, strong
winds will be possible. Right now the area with the highest
potential for significant snowfall looks to be from west central
into central Minnesota. Stay tuned for updates refining expected
snow and ice accumulations as well as timing.
