western Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow...

.A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for central Minnesota
starting at 1 PM this afternoon and lasting through 1 AM tonight.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for areas south
of a line from Redwood Falls to Faribault, to Red Wing, 
Minnesota, and Bloomer Wisconsin from late tonight through Tuesday
evening. Accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are possible in this 
area.

Snow will develop this afternoon in central Minnesota. Another
round of snow will develop later tonight and continue into early 
Tuesday evening before tapering off. The snow may be heavy at 
times. In addition, winds gusting as high as 35 mph could cause 
some blowing and drifting snow.

particularly with messaging. It was decided the best way to avoid
potential confusion or overhyping it is to continue advertising
this as two separate rounds, even if lighter snow or freezing
drizzle connects the two steadier periods. Since this is such a
long duration event greater than 36 hours, we couldn't even use
the 8 inch/24 hour criteria to justify a warning across the entire
CWA for the whole event. Plus, impacts aren't expected to rise to
the level of a warning for large time periods anyway. That being
said, much of the CWA will see 6 to 10 inches between today and
Tuesday.

The first round will occur today across central Minnesota into
northwest Wisconsin. This will be occasional moderate snow,
accumulating about 3 inches into the evening. A stronger April
sun and temperatures at or only slightly below freezing should
allow for some melting during the day. QPF is not all that
impressive on any of the model solutions either except for the
overzealous 06Z NAM. However, the dendritic growth zone extends
from near 5kft to 15kft across central MN making for good rate
potential. Rate is really important in the daytime this time of
year for accumulation. Alas, given the low confidence for impacts
and after collaboration with DLH, decided to hold off on an
advisory for now. It is when we lose the stronger radiation after
late afternoon that travel conditions may become a bit icier with
temperatures falling into the 20s. A last minute advisory may be
needed later if it becomes more apparent impacts are more
significant for the evening rush. Will highlight this area in a
special weather statement for now.

After the first round peters out, we may lose some ice aloft
leaving just some patchy freezing drizzle or light snow/flurries
late this evening and during the early overnight hours. The next
round will develop across southern Minnesota late tonight, with
snow spreading north and east by Tuesday morning. This round will
kick off a Winter Storm Watch across southern MN and portions of west
central WI late tonight into Tuesday evening. The second round is
a more classic winter storm, taking on the colorado low archetype.
A well-developed deformation band should encompass a lot of the
CWA, but the heaviest potential will fall within the watch area.
Again, impacts are iffy given that most of the snow falls during
the day. However, in the core of the deformation band where rates
will be plenty healthy we are expecting poor travel conditions.
The watch covers areas we expect to see near or greater than 8
inches due to some of the snow being lost to melting during the
day. Strengthening wind may also add to some of the impacts as
well, but we aren't expecting too many gusts exceeding 35 mph.
Advisories will likely be needed north of the watch area as we
head closer in time.

The snow will wrap up from west to east Tuesday evening, but some
blowing snow may continue across western and southern MN for much
of the night. Any untreated wet surface Tuesday evening will
freeze up quickly as temperatures drop into the teens, bottoming
out in the single digits by Wednesday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Sunday)

The main concern past Tuesday's storm is temperatures by
Thursday/Friday as a very cold, and anomalous air mass moves
southward across the Upper Midwest. 850 MB temperatures are near
-20C by Thursday evening as another surge of Arctic air, which is 3
to 4 standard deviations below normal, moves across the Upper
Midwest and Great Lakes region.

Temperatures yesterday afternoon (April 1st) had 850 MB temperatures
around -12C, so another 8 degrees colder could mean lows dropping
into the single digits by Friday morning. The latest GEFS forecast
plumes for 2 meter temperatures have a significant amount of
ensembles near zero Friday morning. I can't rule out these types of
lows, especially if we get a significant amount of snowfall over the
next two days.

If we get below zero Friday morning, this will be the latest date
in the season for the Twin Cities. The current record for latest
date is March 31, 1969. Even if temperatures don't drop that low,
wind chills will drop well below zero. I wouldn't be surprised to
see average wind chill values Thursday evening, through Friday
morning around -20F.

Although it will be cold, no significant storm systems are in the
forecast through Saturday. The onset of the Arctic air mass progged
to move across the area Thursday, may have a few snow showers
associated with it. However, nothing too significant for impacts on
travel.

Past next weekend, the pattern begins to change, and possibly the
Upper Midwest will see the first signs of Spring late next week (The
week of April 9th). However, as the pattern begins to change with
more zonal flow, a more active and unsettled period is possible.
Both the GFS/EC support a storm system late next weekend which could
bring either rain or snow to the Upper Midwest. I am leaning more
toward rain as stronger energy from the south, and the retreat of
the Arctic air mass, should mean more liquid than frozen.

southeasterly by morning. Snow will lift up from the southwest
and should reach MSP by 1700Z. The heaviest snow will be in the
mid afternoon toward evening. We should see a break in the late
evening but the intensity will pick up again early Tuesday
morning.
