.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Main concern in the short term is the expected evolution of the
overnight MCS across North Dakota early this morning. As of 08Z
this morning, thunderstorms continue to develop along the
southeastern side of the system, stretching into extreme northeast
South Dakota and on the doorstep of western Minnesota.
Latest hi-res guidance overnight suggests ample upper level support
will continue this morning despite losing the low level jet as
during the daytime hours. The shortwave trough moved through the top
of the ridge axis to our northwest and will likely follow the
instability gradient southeast through the day. Meanwhile, a
strengthening jet streak over Lake Superior oriented from northwest
to southeast will also aid in providing lift for the precipitation to
continue. With the low level jet decreasing and the best
instability remaining off to the west and southwest, do expect the
coverage of thunder to decrease as the showers continue eastward
later this morning.
Therefore, expanded and increased PoPs across most of the area today
with the general expectation that a decaying MCS will have enough
upper level support to continue producing showers as it moves
southeast from North Dakota through much of central and southern MN,
and west central WI.
The precipitation will come to an end from west to east late morning
through the afternoon. Tonight will be a warm one ahead of
tomorrow's heat, with lows not dipping much below 70 if at all for
most of southern MN. As a low pressure system rapidly deepens
across southern Saskatchewan tonight, strong low level warm air
advection will lift through the area, possibly leading to the
development of precipitation north of the I-94 corridor closer to
better upper level support form the jet that will remain across the
Great Lakes.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

By Wednesday morning, a surface warm front will extend from
northwest Minnesota southeast to the metro and then south along
I-35 into Iowa. It will progress northeastward slowly through the
day with winds veering slightly and temps warming quickly aloft
behind it. Models are in good agreement with the degree of warm
air and surface dew points. 925 mb temps will range from +26 to
+29C across MN which should bring us widespread 90s for highs.
In addition, very high dew points in the mid and possibly upper
70s will accompany the heat. The official forecast is a bit cooler
and less humid than the raw model consensus, but is higher than
MOS. The resultant heat index readings generated range from 100 to
105 over just about all of our MN counties. Excessive Heat Warning
criteria is 100 in the metro counties and 105 for outstate.
Decided to hoist an Excessive Heat Watch for the whole metro and
the outstate counties with heat indices of 102 to 103.
Cannot rule out a few storms firing by late afternoon in the
vicinity of the warm front near the WI/MN state line and north of
I-94 in MN, but believe the most widespread coverage will be
across northeastern MN. Some building of activity to the southwest
will be possible during the evening and overnight along an
approaching cold front into western MN, capable of large hail,
wind damage and heavy rainfall. A weakening tendency is expected
late Wednesday night as this activity approaches south central and
east central MN.
The front will stretch from southwest MN to northwest WI Thursday
morning. There should be considerable cloud cover in the morning
near the front, but dew points will pool into the mid 70s again by
mid to late morning. If any clearing occurs by afternoon, another
day with heat indices in the low 100s will likely occur. Confidence
is just not high enough to extend the Excessive Heat Watch into
Thursday given the clouds and possible redevelopment of storms
near the front/highest dew point pooling, also where the highest
heat index readings would occur. The storms will become fairly
numerous across southern MN by afternoon and continue through the
night. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are the main concerns due
to repeated thunderstorms.
Drier air will arrive Friday before the warm front returns for the
weekend. Another chance of storms will accompany the higher ThetaE
air this weekend, but a synoptic scale cold front swinging across
the northern U.S. will clear things out for a while early next
week.

continue to erode this afternoon with a few mid to high level
