UPDATE...Fog has been becoming more widespread over parts of the
coastal counties for the past few hours, and should persist
overnight. So far lowest visibilities have ranged from about one
half mile to around one and a half miles across the area.
However, visibilities will likely drop to below one quarter of a
mile in many locations overnight. As a result we have gone ahead
and issued a Dense Fog Advisory for all of our western Florida
panhandle counties and for the southern portions of our coastal
Alabama counties, valid until 9 am Sunday morning. Otherwise the
forecast appears to be on track and no other changes are required
at this time. 12/DS

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 417 PM CST Sat Dec 29 2018/

NEAR TERM /Now Through Sunday/...A moist southwesterly flow pattern
aloft continues across the central Gulf Coast region this afternoon
between a ridge of high pressure centered near the Bahamas and a
deep upper level trough over the southwestern U.S. and Baja
region. A surface frontal boundary meanwhile continues to stretch
over our offshore Gulf zones this afternoon. A cool northeasterly
flow prevails behind the front with scattered to numerous showers
developing over interior southeast MS and southwest AL, as well
as near the immediate coast.

The moist southwesterly flow pattern aloft will continue through
Sunday as the deep upper trough continues to slowly advance across
the southwestern states and adjacent northern Mexico. Weak impulses
in the flow aloft and isentropic ascent will bring a continued
chance of rain showers across our forecast area through Sunday
afternoon. We will likely coverage (60-70%) of rain showers across
much of the region tonight, followed by chance (30-50%) POPs on
Sunday. Additional rainfall amounts through tonight generally
average 0.25" to 0.50" across the region, so additional flooding
due to heavy rain is quite limited. However, an Areal Flood
Warning will continue across Perry, Greene, and Wayne counties in
southeast MS as well as Choctaw and Washington counties in
southwest AL where ongoing inundation persists due to heavy rains
from Thursday night. Several area rivers remain in or are forecast
to go into flood tonight into early to mid next week.

The front should retreat northward as a warm front tonight, likely
reaching from near the Mobile/Baldwin county coastline and
northeastward across the western FL panhandle and toward Covington
county AL by early Sunday morning. Conditions will favor areas of
fog along and south of the front tonight, and have included mention
of areas of dense fog roughly southeast of a Mobile to Andalusia
line this evening into early Sunday morning. While confidence was
still too low to pinpoint a Dense Fog Advisory, later shifts this
evening/tonight will monitor trends closely for potential advisory
issuance. Lows tonight should range from around 50 to the mid 50s
northwest of I-65 to the upper 50s to lower 60s over the southeastern
zones. Highs Sunday should only reach the mid to upper 60s over
the northwestern CWA, with readings around 70 to the lower 70s
expected over the southeastern part of the area. /21

SHORT TERM /Sunday night Through Tuesday night/...Sunday night
through Monday night, an upper trough over the Desert Southwest
moves east to over the Plains, then gets deflected northeast by an
upper ridge stretching north along the Eastern seaboard. Increasing
low level flow on the west side of a low level ridge stretching west
over the the Gulf of Mexico moves a surface warm front stalled along
the I65 corridor inland. Instability and wind shear increase later
Sunday night into Monday south of the warm front, especially along
and west of the Tombigbee River. MLcapes rise to around 600-700J/kg
with Bulk Shear values rising around 60kts by 18Z Monday over
eastern Mississippi before the axis shifts east over the bulk of the
forecast area ahead of an approaching cold front. Strong to
marginally severe storms are possible, though with better upper
support associated with the shortwave system remain north of the
area, the risk of strong to severe storms will be decreased. More
importantly, training cells may be an issue, exacerbating current
flooding issues or adding new ones, especially with the rivers over
the northwestern half of the forecast area expected to crest Monday
night into Tuesday. At this point, SPC has the area west of the
Alabama highlighted in a Marginal Risk of sever weather for
Monday/Monday night. Temperatures above seasonal Sunday night
through Monday night expected.

Tuesday through Tuesday night, the system's cold front stalls over
the northern Gulf. A passing mid/upper level jet streak will combine
with overrunning north of the cold front to bring increasing chances
of rain to the area. The slow passage and weakening nature of the
cold front moving over the area will allow highs Tuesday to rise to
above seasonal norms, but will bring below seasonal temperatures
Tuesday night.

LONG TERM /Wednesday Through Saturday/...For the current package,
spread in the guidance has increased, leading to less confidence.
Reason for the increase is the handling of a closed upper low over
the Desert southwest (ECMWF) or US/Mex border (GFS), and handling of
a stalled surface front over the northern Gulf of Mexico early
Wednesday. The ECMWF continues to advertise a closed low moving over
the Plains to the Tenn River Valley Wednesday through Thursday
night, with the axis of the system passing late Thursday into
Thursday night as the system moves well north of the forecast area.
This is a bit more northerly track than yesterday, but pretty close
to the previous timing. The ECMWF develops a surface low over the
northwestern Gulf, which then heads northeast across Mississippi to
northern Alabama. This solution will lead to warm sectoring over
areas southeast of the I65 corridor and possible strong storms. The
GFS solution on the other hand meanders the upper system east over
the Southern Plains, with the axis of the system passing over the
forecast area Friday, bringing an extended period of overrunning
rain to the area Wednesday through Friday. The GFS ensembles lend
credence to this solution, but with this being a significant change
from previous solutions, am tending to discount. At this point, have
stuck closer to the previous forecast, with a closed upper low
moving east over the Southeast, and its associated surface low
moving east along the northern Gulf coast and passing over the
forecast area early Thursday. With this, am expecting overrunning
rain Wednesday, with a few thunderstorms mixing in late Wednesday
night through Thursday morning as the upper dynamics with the system
pass. Wrap-around rain moves over the area after the surface
circulation passes, lasting into Friday. Cooler northerly air moves
over the area after the surface low passes, but quickly modifies into
the weekend. Temperatures around to below seasonal expected through
the extended.

MARINE...A Dense Marine Fog Advisory has been issued this evening
into Sunday morning for the entire marine area. Areas of dense fog
will develop with visibility becoming reduced to less than one mile
at times. Otherwise, a light to moderate east to northeast flow
becomes southeasterly tonight into Sunday morning as a weak frontal
boundary over the marine area moves inland. The onshore flow becomes
moderate to strong Sunday night into Monday as a cold front
approaches from the west. Additional marine fog is possible Sunday
night into Monday. An offshore flow follows for Tuesday as the front
moves through the area. /21
