* WAVES/SEAS...Building to 6 to 10 feet out to 20 nm and 10 to 17

  the Mississippi Sound east of Pascagoula.

morning tomorrow. A 5 to 10 knot southeasterly winds will slowly
shift westerly late tonight and into tomorrow morning. Areas of fog
could be possible west of I-65, mainly in the southeastern
Mississippi counties and southwestern Alabama counties. Periods of
light to moderate rain will accompany IFR ceilings through the
day tomorrow with possible improvement to MVFR ceilings west of

UPDATE...Forecast remains generally on track. Updated package to
remove the possibility of thunderstorms except along the Florida
panhandle and over the marine area. The surface boundary
currently exists this region and is providing favorable lift for
heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms. Showers and
thunderstorms should gradually turn over to rain most areas
tonight into tomorrow and diminish as the frontal system exits
eastward. Some convection though will remain possible over the
Gulf that could impact coastal areas. Satellite trends indicate
we could see some breaks in cloud cover especially over our SE
Mississippi and Western Alabama counties so added areas of fog
this evening. Dense fog development is not out of the question
and forecast package may require another update. /08

AVIATION...
00Z issuance...A mix of MVFR and IFR conditions west of the I-65
corridor as light to moderate rain has begun. Rain will continue
to spread east through mid-evening bringing IFR/LIFR ceilings
across the area. Isolated thunderstorms are likely along and near
coastal counties. Southeast winds at 5-10 knots will turn more
westerly tonight as the low pressure system moves east. MVFR/IFR
conditions will persist into the morning gradually improving
through tomorrow afternoon. 03/BB

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 355 PM CST Wed Dec 19 2018/

NEAR TERM /Now Through Thursday/...A large and highly amplified
upper trof over the central states advances slowly eastward to
extend from the western Great Lakes to the lower Mississippi river
valley. A surface low located over Louisiana advances slowly into
central Mississippi tonight, occluding with the upper trof, while
a secondary surface low forms near the coast of the forecast area
in response to a powerful shortwave moving through the base of the
upper trof. The occluded surface low continues slowly into central
Alabama on Thursday while the secondary surface low moves along
the remainder of the coast of the forecast area before lifting
into Georgia. A warm front will be located over the near shore
waters ahead of this system, but due to the development/movement
of the secondary surface low makes little northward headway
through the period, at least in our forecast area. This in turn
inhibits any appreciable instability from advancing into the
forecast area during the period and instead promotes an excellent
overrunning pattern mainly during tonight.

Rainfall amounts through the period will be generally around 1
inch, although model guidance suggests higher amounts up to 2
inches are possible generally over the coastal counties. Given
antecedent conditions and these potential higher amounts, there is
the potential for minor nuisance flooding generally over the
coastal counties. Not sure about the potential for strong storms
near the coast with the warm front given low instability, but
will leave the current wording in the Hazardous Weather Outlook
for now. After assessing data, a moderate risk for rip currents
looks good through Thursday. /29

SHORT TERM /Thursday night Through Saturday night/...The highly
amplified large upper level trough extending from south central
Canada to the Yucatan Peninsula will shift east of the Mississippi
River Thursday night. The surface low associated with the upper
trough across the southeast states will continue to deepen to
990mb by late Thursday night. The upper level trough will shift
east of the forecast area Friday and Friday night, with the
surface low lifting quickly northward up the Appalachian
Mountains. With the combination of wrap-around moisture in the
wake of the system and low level lifting as cold front moves
through the area, kept a 60 to 80 percent chance of rain showers
across the area Thursday night. The rain will come to end
throughout the day Friday as high pressure builds into the region
from the west. Dry conditions will occur Friday night and Saturday
as surface high pressure settles across the southeast conus and
zonal flow aloft resumes in the wake up the departing upper
trough. /22

LONG TERM /Sunday Through Wednesday/...A fast moving upper level
shortwave passing north of the forecast area Sunday should send a
weak surface trough and cold front into the northwest portion of
the forecast area. A band of light rain showers is expected to
develop ahead of the front and enter into the inland portions of
southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama Sunday afternoon and
evening. Therefore, maintained a 20 percent chance across this
area. Otherwise, the dry conditions will prevail through Tuesday
night ahead of the next storm system.

A large upper level trough over the western conus Tuesday night,
with an embedded closed low, will move eastward over the Great
Plains through midweek. A deep southwest wind flow ahead of the
trough will bring moisture and clouds back over the forecast area
Tuesday through midweek. Meanwhile, a surface ridge of high
pressure area over the eastern conus will shift eastward to the
east coast, setting up a return flow of low level moisture.
Increasing coverage in rain showers will occur Wednesday, with
scattered to likely categories in the forecast. /22

MARINE...Strong southerly winds near 20 knots are expected
during much of tonight then subside late tonight and become
westerly as a surface low shifts eastward along the coast (see
NEAR TERM discussion). A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for
much of the marine area from 00Z-09Z tonight. A light to moderate
westerly flow Thursday morning increases significantly and becomes
northwest through Thursday night as a strong cold front moves
through the area. Based on the arrival of the strongest winds,
have adjusted the Gale Warning (upgraded from watch with this
package) slightly so that it still begins over much of the Alabama
waters at 21Z Thursday, but is delayed until 00Z Friday for much
of the FL waters. The Gale Warning then remains in effect until
midday Friday, after which the strong offshore flow gradually
subsides through Friday night. /29

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Alabama,
southwest Alabama, northwest Florida and southeast Mississippi.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Widespread showers with a few embedded thunderstorms will move
across the forecast area late this afternoon through tonight. A
few strong thunderstorms will possible mainly along the immediate
coast and offshore late tonight and early Friday morning.
Widespread severe thunderstorm development is not expected.

Some minor nuisance flooding, mainly in areas with poor drainage,
will be possible by early Friday morning, occurring mainly along
and south of a line stretching from Dauphin Island to Andalusia in
Alabama which includes all areas of the western Florida
Panhandle. Widespread flash flooding is not is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

Breezy to windy conditions will develop late Thursday through
Friday in the wake of a strong cold front. The stronger winds
will occur over the coastal counties of both Alabama and Northwest
Florida during this time frame. As a result, a wind advisory may
be required by early Friday. In advance of this front, a brief period
of increasingly strong onshore winds could result in high surf along
the beaches and an increased rip current risk as well.
