* The threat for flash flooding is increasing across inland
  southeast Mississippi and portions of inland southwest Alabama,
  roughly along and west of a Camden to Citronelle line. In these
  areas, rain totals of 4 to 6 inches are likely with locally
  higher totals possible. Further east across the watch area, 2 to
  4 inches of rain are likely with locally higher totals possible.
  The greatest threat for flash flooding will be from mid evening
  into Friday morning. 
 
* This heavy rainfall will likely produce areas of flash flooding,
  resulting in some flooded roadways with road closures possible.
  Some structures could be threatened. Minor river flooding is 
  already forecast to occur on some area rivers and will be 
  possible along other rivers, depending on where the heaviest 
  rainfall occurs.

  flooding may result in some flooded roadways with road closures
  possible. Where the heaviest rainfall has occurred additional
  businesses and homes could be threatened. Minor to moderate 
  river flooding is already forecast to occur on some area rivers

early Wednesday morning, with visibilities reduced to 1 to 3 miles
at times. Outside of the overnight fog, VFR conditions prevail
throughout the period. Light easterly winds tonight shift to
southeasterly and increase to around 10 knots on Wednesday. /49

UPDATE...

Surface high pressure centered over the southern Appalachians
extends southwest over the forecast area this evening with light
low level easterly flow. Latest surface observations are
indicating narrowing dewpoint depressions this evening, especially
across interior western Florida Panhandle, far southern Alabama,
and far southeast Mississippi. Skies remain partly cloudy over
these locations along with light winds. This has allowed for the
development of patchy fog this evening. Fog should increase in
coverage over these locations after midnight and may become
locally dense.

Further north, mid and high level clouds continue to advect over
the area. This has limited the fog development in these locations
and any fog should remain patchy through the night.

Temperatures should remain a few degrees higher than previously
forecast and have adjusted low temperatures up a few degrees.

Looking ahead to the next couple of days, the overall pattern
appears to support an enhanced potential for heavy rainfall along
with a low threat for severe storms. Any low end severe threat
should be focused late Thursday afternoon into Thursday night
mainly across far southeast Mississippi into coastal Alabama. The
heavy rainfall threat should extend from late Wednesday night
through the weekend and into the first part of next week. Several
inches of rainfall still looks possible during this period which
may result in areas of flooding. Continue to monitor the latest
forecast for additional details regarding both the low potential
for severe storms and likelihood for heavy rainfall.

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 315 PM CST Tue Dec 25 2018/

NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday/...High pressure system over the
Appalachian Mountains shifts east which locally continues the
light easterly winds for the Gulf Coast. Overnight some residual
cold air damming effects should push dew points down a few degrees
into the mid 40s inland and could lead to patchy fog formation
north of the Mobile Bay prior to sunrise. Upper level ridge builds
over the Southeast Wednesday. With the induced subsidence
precipitable water values during the day stay below 1.00 inch. As
a result rain chances will again be near zero. The ridge axis
continues to shift east in the afternoon and evening. At the same
time winds take on a more southerly component as the air column
gradually moistens before sundown. Temperatures are expected to
reach the mid 60s or around 5 degrees warmer than seasonal norms.

SHORT TERM /Wednesday night Through Friday night/...By Wednesday
night, an eastward moving cold front is expected to lie across
central Texas extending southward into Mexico. A potent line of
thunderstorms will likely have developed out ahead of it. This
surface frontal system will be supported aloft by a strong upper
level shortwave trough extending from a 500 mb closed low over NE
New Mexico southward over Texas into Mexico. The upper level jet
at this time will have rounded the base of the trough and this
feature will begin ejecting northeastward along the longwave
trough.

Closer to home at this time...surface high pressure ridging
southwestward into the north central Gulf will keep a relatively
cool shallow dome of air over the area.  Aloft, an upper ridge axis
shifts east of the region and a moist southerly flow develops
creating isentropic lift with light rain expected to develop late
Wednesday night. Layer precipitable water amounts are projected to
climb from less than an inch Wednesday afternoon to around an inch
and a half Wednesday night.

Layer precipitable water amounts range from 1.5 to 1.75 inches
Thursday as minor shortwave troughs in advance of the main system
serve to occasionaly in enhance rainfall early in the day Thursday.
The main line of thunderstorms approaching in advance of the cold
front appears at this time to reach our Southeast Mississippi
Counties Thursday afternoon and Western Alabama counties by late
afternoon/early evening. With the main upper level dynamics shifting
northeast, seems reasonable the line of storms will weaken Thursday,
but favorable vertical shear values and at least marginal
instability Thursday afternoon should sustain it.  However, the line
of thunderstorms doesn't look like it will sustain itself Thursday
night and that the weakening cold front will move into the area
Friday and stall near the coast so showers and isolated
thunderstorms may continue through Friday night. Temperatures
during this period will trend considerably warmer than
climatological norms.

Following the scenario, the highest rainfall totals should occur
Thursday and Friday...generally along and west of the I-65
corridor where accumulations of 3 to 5 inches with locally higher
amounts are possible. Otherwise, widespread rainfall amounts of 2
to 4 inches look reasonable.

Given the uncertainty of how the expected approaching line of
thunderstorms will actually evolve, will continue the marginal
chance of severe thunderstorms over our SE Mississippi counties
along with our western and coastal Alabama counties. By Thursday
afternoon, the deep-layer upper level cyclone and stronger
dynamics are currently projected to be displaced northward such
that the severe threat should be decreasing as a weakening line of
thunderstorms moves into our region.

Of additional note: An increasing southerly wind flow over the
Gulf will create a high risk of rip currents Wednesday morning
through late Friday night and high surf of 4 to 6 feet Wednesday
night through Friday along our Gulf beaches. Advisories have been
issued. /08

LONG TERM /Saturday Through Tuesday/...A wet and showery period
is projected to continue through the weekend as the stalled bound
remains over or near the region through Tuesday. Layer
precipitable water mounts will remain elevated generally above 1.5
inches...well above normal for this time of year. Southwest flow
over the region will allow minor shortwave troughs to couple with
the lift along the old boundary and generate periods of rain
showers which would tend to exacerbate any river flooding that
gets initiated due to the heavier rainfall expected on the
preceding Thursday and Friday. Strong forcing at this time is not
anticipated so most of the showers expected to be light with any
heavier shower activity anticipated to be sporadic enough that the
soils will be able to handle it. Could still see localized
flooding in urban and poor drainage areas. We'll have to continue
to monitor the situation for any enhanced precipitation potential
through the period which could heighten flood concerns. /08

MARINE...Winds shift southeast and seas build offshore Wednesday ahead of the
next system. Hazardous conditions for smaller craft are likely to
begin Wednesday afternoon and continue into Friday. Overnight
Wednesday into Thursday offshore showers begin as winds become more
onshore into the day Thursday. Wave heights build to above 7 feet by
the afternoon as strong incoming storms are expected to move into
the western marine zones. These heavy storms should linger into
Friday evening. A small craft advisory is in effect starting noon
Wednesday lasting until Friday. Rains are anticipated to continue
into the weekend and into the beginning of next week. DJ/17

Rains begin to increase in areal coverage Wednesday night. Locally
heavy rains look to set up Thursday and continues into perhaps Friday.
During this time period, an elevated threat of flooding is now in
place generally along and west of I-65. East of the interstate, a
limited threat of flooding is maintained. A flash flood watch may
become necessary for portions of the local area. Modest rain chances
are expected to persist into the weekend with some areas continuing
to see the potential for locally heavy downpours, which may lead to
isolated cases of flooding.

A marginal risk for severe storms exists over the western half of the
local area Thursday and Thursday night.

Rip current risk becomes high along the beaches of Alabama and the
western Florida panhandle by Wednesday and continues through Friday.

Thursday, respectively. Small craft advisories will likely be
required into the middle of the week. The passage of heavier rains
will likely bring reductions to visibility to below a mile at times
Thursday and Thursday night.
