The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for rough surf and strong longshore currents, which is in effect from 11 AM EST this morning through this evening. * HAZARDS...Rough surf and strong longshore currents. Life threatening rip currents will also occur near piers, jetties and reefs. * LOCATION...The beaches of Volusia and Brevard counties. * TIMING...Starting late morning in Volusia county and then mainly during the late afternoon in Brevard county. * POTENTIAL IMPACTS...Breaking waves and longshore currents can knock off the sandbar into deeper water. Rip currents will become strong near structures in the water such as piers, jetties and reefs. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Check with Ocean Rescue personnel before entering the surf.
