.UPDATE...

The 12Z GFS made a big jump south toward the ECMWF/NAM
solutions for the upcoming snow...though it's still farther north
similar to the Canadian. The RAP/HRRR also similar to the
GFS/Canadian...maybe even a little farther north. Overall
though...it seems models are converging toward are more southern
solution. Have made morning adjustments to cut back on precip
chances and amounts across the northwest half of the forecast
area...and adjusted down just a little in the southeast. Still a
good snow potential in southeast areas. Will be interesting to see
the 12Z ECMWF...which has been very consistent in the southward
path.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

Low clouds, reduced visibilities, and some drizzle should
gradually improve this afternoon, with many locations probably
sneaking into MVFR. Borderline MVFR/IFR ceilings are expected to
hang around into tonight for most areas as low pressure
approaches.

Attention then turns to the winter storm which will move through
the region Sunday. Overall, there has been a southward shift in
model guidance, suggesting little to no snowfall in the northwest
forecast area, and slightly less amounts southeast. The far
southeast may hang onto the higher amounts, as many models still
hit that area. Still deciding on snowfall totals as model data
continues to come in. Forecast probably won't change too much in
the southeast, with lesser amounts toward the northwest.

Snow will begin south of Madison and Milwaukee early to mid
morning tomorrow, spreading northward late morning into the
afternoon. Still think there could be a mix with rain in the
southeast near Lake Michigan at times, especially through early
afternoon. Probably will be mainly snow later afternoon into the
evening. The snow will wind down west to east by around midnight
or shortly thereafter.

The snow will be on the wetter side, with ratios in the 8-12 to 1
range where the higher totals are expected. This should help to
limit blowing of the snow somewhat when winds pick up later in the
day and into the evening.

Low ceilings and visibilities are expected with the snowfall.
Lowest visibilities could be down to 1/4 mile in the heavier snow
southeast, especially in the Burlington, Racine, and Kenosha
areas.

UPDATE...

12Z Model runs are rolling in and aren't providing any more
confidence in the upcoming potential winter storm. The NAM is
quite far south, barely clipping the southeast forecast area. The
latest Canadian Regional model is similar to the current forecast,
which is also supported by the latest HRRR. The 06Z GFS remains
the highest north and the 00Z ECMWF is south similar to the NAM.
Still a couple pieces of the puzzle to see this morning, so unsure
yet of any changes to the totals or headlines.

As for the current weather, expecting that the rain/drizzle and
reduced visibilities should move out of the area through late
morning. Clouds will likely hang on most of the day, with near
steady temps in the low 40s.

MARINE...

Nearshore Waters...Allowed the Small Craft Advisory to expire for
areas north of Port Washington, as winds have subsided below
criteria.

There may be a period of westerly wind gusts reaching 22 to 25
knots later this afternoon into this evening, as decent mixing
with a rather tight pressure gradient develops. A Small Craft
Advisory may be needed for this period.

Northeast winds will increase Sunday afternoon, becoming north
Sunday evening and northwest later Sunday night into Monday
evening, as a strong low pressure system passes by to the
southeast. Frequent gusts of 25 to 30 knots are expected during
this period, so a Small Craft Advisory will eventually be needed.
There may be gale force gusts to 35 knots Sunday night, so a Gale
Watch or Warning may be needed for this period.

Open Waters...Northeast winds will increase Sunday afternoon,
becoming north Sunday evening and northwest later Sunday night
into Monday evening, as a strong low pressure system passes by to
the southeast. Frequent gale force gusts to 35 knots are expected
by late Sunday afternoon over the south half of the lake,
increasing to 40 knots Sunday night.

The gales may continue into Monday morning before diminishing.
The Gale Watch will eventually be upgraded to a Gale Warning for
this period. High waves are expected to develop as well during
this period over the south half of the lake.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 608 AM CST Sat Nov 24 2018)

UPDATE...

The forecast is on track. The steadier rain is currently over east
central Wisconsin and there is lighter rain and areas of drizzle
now moving through south central and southeast Wisconsin. Surface
observations show an area of fog near Mineral Point, Platteville,
and Monroe with visibility down to a half mile. This will be
short-lived until the westerly winds kick in as the low shifts
east.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

An area of dense fog with visibility around a half mile where the
steadier rain ended will gradually shift eastward across southern
Wisconsin this morning as low pressure moves out and we await
stronger westerly winds. Expect stratus to remain over southern WI
all day, with LIFR ceilings rising to IFR later this morning and
eventually MVFR this afternoon. Look for snow to begin spreading
into south central WI first thing Sunday morning and into
southeast WI by mid Sunday morning.

SHORT TERM...

Today and Tonight...Forecast Confidence is High.

An area of rain associated with an open, longwave mid level
trough is tapering off from west to east across southern Wisconsin
early this morning. While the steadier rain with the upper
divergence and vorticity advection is ending, we should still see
some areas of drizzle or light rain linger as a weaker shortwave
trough moves through.

Westerly winds will increase this afternoon so that high
temperatures in the lower to mid 40s will still feel chilly. Not
expecting widespread clearing of clouds today.

Sunday through Wednesday...Forecast confidence medium.

Will continue to take a consensus of models on track and strength
of the strong upper wave that is currently over the Pacific NW.
The ECMWF is farther south and slower while the GFS is quicker,
farther north, and with a pcpn shield over all of srn WI. The
SREF and NAM is a nice mix of the two.

The strong upper wave and low pressure area will track from the
KS/MO border Sun AM into nrn IN Sun eve and to the srn tip of Lake
Huron around 12Z Mon. The low will likely occlude Sun nt into
Mon. The left front quadrant of a 120-130 kt jet accompanied by
WAA at the jet level and PVA will set up over se WI, and aid the
mid level frontogenesis band. PWs of 0.65 inches expected over se
WI and most models do overlap with fairly decent qpf values over
the Winter Storm Watch area, increasingly higher toward the se
corner of WI. The thermal profile, mainly the low levels is
challenging from MKE to ENW given the mild Lake MI water temps
and the overall mild temps before the heavier pcpn arrives. Thus a
rain and snow mix will begin the event with it trending to all
snow during the afternoon when the heavier pcpn arrives, unless
there is a more nrn track thereby keeping temps milder and more
rain. Currently forecasting 2-4 inches of wet snow at the
lakefront and 5-7 inches just inland, but snow probabilities give
a large range of possibilities due to model differences. The 25th
percentile in the watch area is 2-3 inches while the 75th
percentile is 8 inches. Blowing snow may become a problem late in
the event after temps cool and the snow becomes drier. Brisk nwly
winds and cold advection will continue into Mon.

The large occlusion will be slow to move out of the Great Lakes
and srn Ontario, Canada. Cyclonic flow and cold temps will
continue with perhaps flurries at times through Wed.

LONG TERM...Thursday and Friday...Forecast confidence low.

High pressure will finally build into WI Wed nt with low
confidence of the upper air pattern and pressure pattern for Thu-
Fri. The high could easily remain over the area into early Fri
with dry conditions or the next shortwave trough could bring
chances of light snow.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Ceilings and visibilities are dropping to IFR conditions as the
main area of precip ends from west to east. Another area of light
precip, mainly drizzle, is apparent on radar to our west. This
will make its way across southern WI through late morning for a
slower ending trend to the precip. Southerly winds are winding
down this morning. Look for gusty west winds to develop this
afternoon and diminish this evening.

MARINE...

Southeasterly wind gusts were not hitting gale force tonight due
to lack of deep mixing. Therefore, we cancelled the Gale Warning.
A Gale Watch is in effect over the south half of Lake Michigan
from late Sunday afternoon through mid Monday morning for north to
northeast gales up to 40 kt. If the low pressure system that will
track across central IL and into northern Indiana or southern
Michigan tracks farther north or becomes deeper than
anticipated, wind gusts have the potential to reach storm force
for a short period of time.
