.UPDATE...Slushy snow accums this afternoon from WI Dells to Ripon
and nwd. Some additional light snow accum is expected there but
mostly rain for tnt. Did mention slight chances for tstorms
spreading nwd through the afternoon and over all srn WI tnt as the
850 mb TROWAL provides tall, skinny CAPE via the forecast
soundings. Already seeing more showery looking cells over nrn IL.
Do expect the showers and isold tstorms to expand once again from
this afternoon into the evening as low to mid level warm, moist
advection and frontogenesis continues with the arrival of the
TROWAL.

The occluded low will evolve more into a sfc trough along the
occluded front, and tracking enewd from srn IA to srn Lake MI for
Sun. This will maintain light mixed pcpn for Sunday with rain
gradually changing to light snow from nw to se across the area.
Snow accums for Sun-Sun nt 2 inches or less with highest amounts
north and northwest of Madison. Another concern is the dense fog
potential over se WI late tnt into Sun AM as the occluded low
passes. Areas of fog is forecast for now.

UPDATE...

May be an hour fast with the timing of the precipitation into the
area from the south this morning. Still confident in the overall
trend this morning of a rain/snow mix at onset, becoming rain from
south to north later this morning into the afternoon. There is
some fog across the area, and it should linger until the
precipitation moves in by middle morning. Gusty east winds are
already occurring across southern portions of the area, and should
gradually get stronger today.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Some fog with 1 to 4 mile visibility values will linger until the
precipitation moves in by middle morning. Gusty east winds are
already occurring in southern portions of the area.

Area of precipitation will push north into the area this morning,
lingering this afternoon and tonight. It will be a rain/snow mix
for an hour or two by middle morning at the terminals, before
becoming all rain by midday. A tenth or so of slushy accumulation
is possible, before the transition to all rain. The mix may linger
into this afternoon north of the terminals, becoming rain by
early evening. Mainly rain is expected tonight, with a rain/snow
mix toward the Dells possible later tonight.

May see some fog at times today into tonight, with a few rumbles
of thunder this afternoon into early this evening. Gusty east
winds are expected today, with gusts of 30 to 35 knots possible
this afternoon. Winds will become northeast gusting to 25 knots
tonight in northern parts of the area. Winds will become rather
light in the southern areas tonight. Ceilings will be in the 300
to 700 foot range today into tonight, with visibility values of 1
to 2 miles with the precipitation and fog.

SHORT TERM...

Today And Tonight...Forecast Confidence Is High.

Models are in good agreement with strong low pressure moving
northeast from eastern Kansas into far northwest Missouri today,
then into southeast Iowa tonight. The low will start to occlude
and weaken later today into tonight, as it becomes vertically
stacked with the closed 500 mb low. Left exit region of jet
streak may bring some upper divergence into the area as well later
today into this evening. A TROWAL moving through the region will
also aid with strong upward vertical motion.

Strong warm air/moisture advection into the area today is
expected, with a good area of 850 to 700 mb frontogenesis response
moving northward through the area. Mesoscale models are in decent
agreement with bringing the initial band of precipitation
northward into the area by the mid-morning hours. Area forecast
soundings are showing a quick saturation in a deep layer this
morning, which should combine with gradually rising surface
temperatures to bring a mix of rain and snow, transitioning to
rain south to north in the middle morning into the afternoon.
Northern areas may see slushy accumulations of an inch or less
today.

May see a few rumbles of thunder this afternoon into early
evening in the southern parts of the area, with the strong upward
motion and weak elevated CAPE on area forecast soundings. Gusty
east northeast winds will bring a raw day today, with highs in the
middle to upper 30s.

Mainly rain is expected tonight, as warm air advection continues
to feed into the area. May see a lull in the precipitation later
tonight in the southeast, as the best upward vertical motion gets
pushed into northwestern parts of the area. Mesoscale models were
showing this trend as well. A mix of rain and snow is expected in
northwestern parts of the area later tonight, with cooler
temperatures there. Temperatures should remain nearly steady for
most of tonight.

LONG TERM...

Sunday and Sunday Night...Forecast confidence moderate to high.

By Sunday morning, the surface low will be lifting north across
far southeastern Wisconsin. Rain will prevail initially in most
areas, but colder air will begin to build in from the north and
northwest as the low lifts through the region, resulting in a
changeover to snow from northwest to southeast.

Right now this looks to be a fairly steady process through the
day on Sunday, though the exact particulars are likely to change
over the next 24 hours, given the dependence on just a degree or
two difference in temperature. The exact timing of the switchover
will have a significant impact on how much snow accumulates on the
back side of the system. Right now that looks to be around an inch
in most spots.

Monday through Wednesday...Forecast confidence high.

Snow showers will continue through Monday morning, along with
brisk north winds. A colder airmass will build into the area,
with temperatures on Monday likely remaining below freezing. Lows
Monday night into Tuesday morning look to be in the upper teens to
low 20s.

Tuesday and Wednesday should be dry but cool, with highs in the
20s both days.

Thursday into next Weekend...Forecast confidence moderate.

Snow chances will return on Thursday, as a quick hitting clipper
system swings through the Great Lakes. While too early to discuss
exact amounts, accumulations look like they would be relatively
minor.

Arctic high pressure is then expected to build south across the
Great Plains late in the week into next weekend, bringing
continued below normal temperatures to the area.

Area of precipitation will push north into the area this morning,

for an hour or two by middle morning at the terminals, before
becoming all rain by midday. A tenth or so of slushy accumulation
is possible, before the transition to all rain. The mix may linger
into this afternoon north of the terminals, becoming rain by
early evening. Mainly rain is expected tonight, with a rain/snow
mix toward the Dells possible later tonight.

May see some fog at times today into tonight, with a few rumbles
of thunder this afternoon into early this evening. Gusty east
winds are expected today with gusts of 30 to 35 knots possible,
becoming northeast gusting to 25 knots tonight in northern parts
of the area. Winds will become rather light in the southern areas
tonight. Ceilings will be in the 300 to 700 foot range today into
tonight, with visibility values of 1 to 2 miles with the
precipitation and fog.

MARINE...

Nearshore Waters...Gale Warning remains in effect from 6 AM CST
today until 6 PM CST this evening. Frequent gale force gusts to 35
knots are expected to develop by middle morning across the
nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. They should weaken to around
30 knots by early this evening. These winds will bring high waves
of 7 to 11 feet this afternoon into this evening. A Small Craft
Advisory will be needed after the Gale Warning expires for most of
tonight, as onshore winds slowly weaken but remain gusty.

May see another period of gusty winds Sunday night into Monday,
with gusts of 30 to 35 knots possible at times. A Small Craft
Advisory or Gale Watch/Warning may eventually be needed for this
period. Another round of high waves is possible during this time
as well.

Open Waters...Gale Warning remains in effect for the north half of
Lake Michigan from 3 PM this afternoon until 6 AM Monday. The Gale
Warning remains in effect for the south half of Lake Michigan from
6 AM CST today until midnight CST tonight.

Easterly winds will frequently gust to 40 knot gales by middle
morning in the south half of the lake, lingering into the
afternoon. This will bring high waves to the western half of the
lake. Winds and waves should weaken somewhat in these areas
tonight into Sunday. More gusty north winds Sunday night into
Monday morning may reach gale force, with high waves developing.

Northeast gales to 35 knots are expected by later this afternoon
and lingering into tonight in the north half of the lake, with
high waves on the western half of the lake. May see more gale
force gusts to 35 knots Sunday night into Monday morning,
especially in the northern half of the lake.

from Reedsburg to Fond du Lac.

Precipitation will change back to all snow on Sunday, continuing
into Sunday night. Light snow accumulations are expected across
much of the area. This may result in slick road conditions,
including potential impacts to the Monday morning commute.

East gales to 40 knots are expected today into tonight, with a few
gusts approaching 45 knots possible. Gales will initially affect
the south half of the lake this morning, extending to the north
half by afternoon. Gales will continue across just the north half
tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Gales will continue across the north half of the lake into Monday
morning. A brief period of north gales will be possible over the
south half Monday morning as well.

Gales will be possible once again Thursday and Thursday night.
