northwest winds will then develop Thursday afternoon and continue 
into Friday in the wake of the cold front.

.SHORT TERM...

Today...Forecast Confidence Is Low to Medium.

Expect a period of passing mid-high clouds across southern WI
this morning into the afternoon, but some thinning of the clouds
later in the day, as initial push of warm air spreads across the
plains into Wisconsin. Protective short wave ridge will move
slowly eastward across the western Great Lakes, gradually exiting
the area later today into this evening.

925H temps warm to 2 to 4C today but clouds and winds picking up
from the south to southeast will temper the warmup somewhat. 925H
temps a degree or two warmer than yesterday. Early morning
temperatures will vary from around 20 to around 30. Expect thicker
stratus to hold off until late today or most likely tonight. With
dwindling snow cover, concerned that my daytime temperatures may
not be warm enough. Did trend between 50% and 90% model certainty,
but enough doubt to have low confidence in high temps for today.

Tonight...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.

Increasing southerly low level winds tonight are expected to tap
into the extensive stratus field draped across much of the central
MS valley region and pull the clouds north into southern
Wisconsin overnight. Deepening low level moisture increases to
around 1km and passing weak mid-level short wave may be enough to
shake out some drizzle from the low clouds after midnight tonight
into early Wednesday.

Surface temperatures tonight will fall to around or slightly
below freezing with slightly colder pavement temperatures
expected. Hence any drizzle that occurs late tonight may freeze on
colder surfaces. For now kept pops low due to shallower moisture.
Thicker fog may accompany push of stratus as well, which could
produce some slick spots on untreated roadways as well.

Wednesday Through Thursday night...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.

Carried the light freezing drizzle until the middle morning hours
on Wednesday in the eastern and northern portions of the area,
until road temperatures can warm up enough to end any glazing
potential.

Warm air advection remains focused on Wednesday, though all of
the moisture is trapped below the low level inversion. Thus,
expecting a cloudy rest of the day with patchy fog with south
winds bringing in gradually higher dew points. Highs should still
reach into the middle 40s in most areas.

Models are then in decent agreement with low pressure moving
northeast from the central high Plains into western Wisconsin
Wednesday night, then northeast into Ontario Canada on Thursday.
This brings a period of robust low level frontogenesis response
fields with a strong cold front Thursday morning. There is also a
shortwave trough at 500 mb shifting northeast through the area.

Continued high PoPs for rain Thursday morning, as the area should
be in the warm sector. Higher dew points moving into the area
should bring areas of fog, with some dense fog possible given
these dew points moving over the relatively colder ground. Highs
in the morning should be well into the 40s and perhaps around 50
in the southeast counties.

Once the cold air advection kicks in southeastward across the
area Thursday afternoon and evening, there should be a transition
from rain to light snow. Removed mention of freezing rain during
this transition, as there is some question as to if there will be
a long enough period of ice crystal loss to allow for it.

Some middle level frontogenesis response fields should shift
through the area into Thursday evening, and may bring light snow
accumulations. At this time, amounts would be rather light, up to
an inch at best.

.LONG TERM...

Friday Through Monday...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.

Main issue in this period is potential for lake effect snow, or a
combination of it with a passing system to the southeast of the
area on the ECMWF model. The ECMWF brings a developing low from
the lower Mississippi River Valley into the northeast Friday into
Saturday. The northern edge of the precipitation shield clips
southeast Wisconsin Friday night into Saturday. The other models
keep this system further away.

However, they do bring a single lake effect snow band into the
lakeshore counties Friday night into Saturday. The delta T values
and low level winds would be favorable, if some decent low level
moisture lingers or pushes into the area from Lake Michigan.

Kept PoPs going near the lake Friday night into Saturday.
Depending on where the band sets up, there could be a decent
amount of snow. Too early to pin this down, but it will bear
watching over the next several days.

Cold air advection will also bring cold temperatures back into
the area Friday into the rest of this period. Models were also
showing some light snow potential Sunday into Sunday night, with a
passing low pressure system and 500 mb vorticity maximum.

.AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Passing mid-high level clouds for most of today. Shifting low
level winds to the south will pull deeper low level moisture into
southern Wisconsin tonight, along with low stratus. Patchy fog
will likely accompany the thickening low level moisture, along
with a chance for some freezing drizzle later tonight into
Wednesday morning.

.MARINE...

Warmer temperatures on Monday melted much of the ice cover across
the near shore waters, and lingering ice closer to the shore
should continue to erode next several days, due to increasing
winds and above freezing temps. The warmer temperatures will also
increase the risk of fog over the near shore waters beginning
tonight and continuing into Thursday. The fog may become dense as
warm, moist air spreads into the region.

The decreasing ice cover and increasing southerly winds ahead of
developing plains Low pressure will result in building waves.
Winds and waves will likely reach Small Craft Advisory levels at
times beginning tonight and carrying into Friday, especially
across northern zone.

Hence posted Small Craft Advisory north of Port Washington to
Sheboygan, beginning later tonight, and continuing into Thursday
morning for now. Northwest winds in the wake of passing low
pressure will get close to Gale Force Thursday night into Friday.
