crest near 14.0 feet Friday afternoon and fall below flood stage
Friday evening.
* Impact...At 13.9 feet...Floodwaters cover a portion of Main Street
in Darlington. A part of the Lafayette County Fairgrounds is flooded.

Fort Atkinson city limits. Water is in park land near the river in
Fort Atkinson.

.UPDATE...
Line of strong to occasionally severe thunderstorms continues to
push across western Wisconsin, northern Iowa, and southern
Minnesota at this hour. Current timing brings the line into
western portions of Sauk and Iowa Counties a little before
midnight.
The airmass continues to stabilize across the area, and the best
upper level support is lifting into northern Wisconsin and the UP.
A few severe wind gusts are possible as this line moves into the
forecast area, but that should be about it for the severe risk.
That said, widespread 40-50 MPH wind gusts are likely with any
precipitation tonight, given very strong winds in the lowest
couple thousand feet of the atmosphere.
Precip should become weaker and increasingly scattered in nature
as it pushes east overnight. Most, if not all of the precipitation
is expected to push east and/or dissipate by daybreak on Friday.

.MARINE...
South to southwest winds will increase considerably over the next
few hours ahead of a cold front. Gales are a good bet across the
northern half of Lake Michigan, with a few gale force gusts across
the southern half as well as the nearshore waters.
Once the front moves through, winds will become westerly overnight
and then northwesterly tomorrow. West to northwest gales are
likely on the northern half of the lake on Friday.
High pressure will build into the area by Saturday, with winds and
waves subsiding in response.

UPDATE...
No major changes to the timing and expectations for the frontal
passage tonight. It still looks like areas west of Madison have a
good shot of seeing thunderstorms, with activity dissipating
fairly quickly as it progresses east. The overall severe risk
seems rather limited, with strong wind gusts as the main risk.
Given the rather impressive winds right off the deck (50 kts at
925mb and 55-60 at 850mb), it won't take much momentum transfer to
get some stronger gusts down to the surface. Even if they don't
reach true severe criteria, 40-50 MPH gusts are likely a good bet
with showers/storms.
AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...
A warm front is lifting north through the area this evening. As
this front moves through, winds will become southerly early this
evening and then southwesterly by late evening. As winds become
southwest expect considerable gustiness to develop, with gusts to
around 25 knots. Low level wind shear will also be a concern as a
strong low level jet moves over the area.
VFR will prevail south of the warm front this evening. For KMSN,
KUES and KENW, the front has already passed. As of 2330Z, the
front is nearly overhead of KMKE, with southeast winds off of Lake
Michigan slowing the northerly progress of the front. These winds
are also resulting in some scattered low ceilings and fog, with
MVFR to brief IFR early this evening near the lake.
A strong cold front will then sweep across the area late this
evening through the overnight hours. A line of showers and
thunderstorms will approach from the west around or after
midnight, but will be dissipating as they move in. KMSN has a good
chance of seeing thunderstorm activity, but chances drop off
fairly quickly for the eastern terminals. Winds will remain
gusty, becoming westerly as the front passes.
Winds will gradually become more northwesterly through the day on
Friday, remaining quite gusty through the day. MVFR ceilings will
also build into the area for most of the day. Clouds will likely
begin to dissipate with sunset Friday evening.

SHORT TERM...
Tonight and Friday...Forecast confidence is high.
A cold front will approach this evening, moving through overnight.
A line of thunderstorms is expected along and ahead of the front.
These storms are expected to reach the western forecast area
around midnight or 1 am...then the Madison area by around 2 am...
and Milwaukee by 4 am. The storms will likely be weakening as the
line progresses eastward across the forecast area. Areas from
Madison westward have the best chance to a few strong to severe
storms. Rainfall totals will generally be under a half an inch
given the that the line of storms will be relatively narrow and
moving at a decent pace.
Dry weather is likely across southern Wisconsin by daybreak
Friday. Clouds will linger behind the cold front through the
morning and likely through at least early evening. May see some
breaks by mid to late afternoon. Temperatures tomorrow will drop
during the morning behind the front, then probably hold fairly
steady into mid-afternoon...falling then into the evening. Throw
in a stiff west to northwest wind and it will be a cool last day
of summer.
Friday night through Sunday night...Forecast confidence high.
A large high pressure area will settle over the Great Lakes late
Fri nt into Sat nt. Lake effect clouds are expected over far ern
WI Sat AM due to onshore flow and lake to 850 mb temp diffs of
17-18C. The depth of moisture and cloud should remain limited by a
dry airmass so not introducing lake effect showers at this
moment. Otherwise, few-sct cumulus during the late morning and
afternoon hours through Sunday with cool nights and pleasant
daytime temps.
LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday...Forecast confidence medium.
The upper pattern will then transition from zonal to an
approaching longwave trough. The associated low pressure area over
the nrn Great Plains will track to Hudson Bay, Canada by 12z Tue
with the cold frontal passage occurring over srn WI on Tue. Thus
chances for showers are forecast for Mon nt-Tue. A weak ridge of
high pressure will then pass Tue nt-Wed AM followed by another
upper trough approaching the nrn Great Lakes with a cold front to
follow. Only small chances of showers with this system with better
lift remaining to the north.
AVIATION(21Z TAFS)...
VFR conditions are returning south to north this afternoon as
clouds clear out.
A line of showers and thunderstorms will move through southern
Wisconsin tonight as a cold front sweeps through the area. The
storms are likely to reach the northwest forecast area in the 11
pm to 1 am range...and eastern areas in the 2 am to 4 am range.
The storms are expected to decrease in intensity as they travel
eastward through southern Wisconsin. Could see some strong to
severe storms roughly from Madison westward as the line first
moves into the area.
Low level wind shear is likely this evening and overnight as a
strong jet moves overhead. Winds will be gusty at the surface
tonight and Friday ahead of and behind the passing front.
Ceilings are likely to go down again later tonight into Friday
morning behind the cold front. Conditions should improve mid to
late afternoon.
MARINE...
Gusty south to southwest winds are expected ahead of an
approaching cold front later today into tonight. The winds will
remain gusty and become west to northwest on Friday behind the
front. Gale force gusts are likely over the north half of Lake
Michigan, with a few gusts possible in the south half.
Highest waves will be in northern and eastern portions of Lake
Michigan through this event.
Kept the timing of the Gale Warning in the north half of Lake
Michigan and the Small Craft Advisory in the nearshore waters.
May have to eventually consider a Gale Warning in the south half
for later tonight into Friday if forecast winds creep up any
higher.
