.UPDATE...

Fog is beginning to spread a bit more north of the WI/IL border as
expected now that the clearing line has crept farther north. Where
fog does develop early this morning, it will likely hang around at
least an hour or two past sunrise until daytime mixing increases.
Otherwise, the forecast remains on track for the upcoming morning.

.AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Stratus continues to linger across much of southern Wisconsin this
morning. Most obs are above 3 kft, though there are a couple MVFR
reports out there. A few visibility obs in the 3-5 mile range will
also be possible through early morning under the stratus. The
line of clearing just north of the WI/IL border continues to creep
northward this morning. Expecting the clouds to hang on though
for the Milwaukee and Madison areas northward, though Madison may
see some breaks in the cloud cover. Will see some lower
visibilites through early morning where there is clearing...as fog
is spreading northward as the clearing line heads north.

Precip will move this evening into tonight ahead of approaching low
pressure. Snow or a rain/snow mix could put down a dusting to half
an inch, mainly from Madison northwestward. The snow wouldn't last
long though, as warming temps overnight will cause a transition to
all rain from southwest to northeast by early Thursday morning.

Lower ceilings are likely to arrive later tonight into Thursday,
with conditions expected to go below 1 kft.

May see some low level wind shear develop by Thursday morning as
a strong low level jet comes overhead.

.PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 325 AM CST WED DEC 26 2018)

SHORT TERM...

TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY - Confidence...High.

High pressure will depart today into tonight as low pressure
approaches the area from the southwest. Mostly cloudy skies will
prevail today, with some sunshine possible toward IL. Went with
milder temps in the south due to the sunshine potential.

The low will reach northern Iowa by Thursday evening. Increasing
moisture ahead of the low will bring a chance of precip to southern
Wisconsin by this evening. The best precip chances this evening and
overnight will be mainly across western and northern portions of the
forecast area. Could see a period of snow or a rain/snow mix
initially, with precip transitioning to all rain from southwest to
northeast tonight into Thu morning. A dusting to a half an inch of
snow will be possible in the northwest forecast area, though the
snow won't last long after the transition to rain.

The bulk of the precip will come through during the day Thursday,
mainly as rain after any lingering mix ends early in the morning.
Temperatures will gradually rise through the day Thursday and into
Thursday evening as the warm sector of the low pushes into Southern
Wisconsin. Temperatures by evening will be in the mid 40s most
places...possibly pushing 50 toward the WI/IL border. Gusty south to
southeast winds are also likely on Thursday.

THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Medium.

As low pressure progresses northeast across central and northern WI
Thursday night, it will drag a weakening frontal boundary across
southern WI.  Column moisture will remain deep through the evening,
through 10K feet so wl continue likely pops across eastern CWA as
low level convergence passes through.  Held off on introducing
thunder, but MUCape does increase to around 50 joules in the
southwest CWA during the evening.

A surge of drier air in the mid-levels does wrap around the
weakening low pressure area, so dropped precipitation chances in the
west in the evening and across the entire area later in the night.
The surface low will continue to track northeast across northern
Lake Michigan into southern Canada on Friday, dragging a secondary,
stronger cold front/low pressure trof across southern WI during the
day.  Impressive layer q-vector convergence and low level
frontogenetical forcing will likely bring another period of light
rain, becoming mixed with or changing to light snow during the
afternoon and evening.  NAM not showing much ice falling into the
cloud layer, but ECMWF and GFS more bullish on ice introduction.
Typically, this scenario results in the liquid changing over to
snow.  However due to uncertainty, left small chance for light
freezing rain in during the aftn/eve as colder air surges across
southern WI on increasing west-northwest winds. Potential for some
light snow accumulations as well during the late afternoon and
evening. Light precipitation threat ends Friday night as drier air
surges in from the north, and low pressure trof sags farther south.

LONG TERM...

SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...Forecast Confidence - Medium.

The weekend is looking quiet across Wisconsin and the bulk of the
neighboring regions, good for travel conditions ahead of New Years.
Increasing subsidence behind departing late week system will result
in a large area of high pressure affecting the western Great Lakes
over the weekend.  Colder temperatures will accompany the quiet
weather but will remain in the ballpark of seasonal readings for
late December.  Medium Range guidance in good agreement on upper
level flow returning to more zonal conditions by the end of the
weekend. Minor differences in the guidance begin to appear as
amplifying upstream troffing takes place heading into New Years Eve.
Southern plains short wave looks to get absorbed into amplifying
long wave trof across the central CONUS, with uncertainty on the
track and strength of this system across the eastern CONUS on Monday
and Tuesday.  ECMWF most aggressive in bringing southern system
northeast into the eastern Great Lakes on New Years Eve, which makes
sense considering upstream amplifying troffing.  This system could
bring some light precip to the area just in time for New Years Eve.
WPC Blend leaning in this direction as well.  However GEM and GFS
keep the affects from this system well to the southeast during the
holiday period.  For now wl have small pops in place for Monday
night with a potential mix of precipitation.  Wl need to watch this
system closely for travel impacts for New Years holiday.

MARINE...

Southeast winds will pick up later tonight into Thursday ahead of
approaching low pressure. Gale force winds are likely over the open
waters late tonight through much of Thursday, with less confidence
over the nearshore waters. Will keep the Gale Watch going for now,
with confidence increasing that a warning will eventually be needed,
especially for the open waters.

West to northwest winds behind the departing low will gust to 25 to
30 knots Friday into Friday night. These higher gusts will be mainly
confined to the open waters.

High pressure will bring light winds for Saturday, though gusts to
30 knots will be possible again Sunday and Monday as the pressure
gradient tightens back up across Lake Michigan.

...PATCHY DENSE FOG THROUGH 9 AM...

Light winds and clear skies allowed areas of fog to develop over
far southern Wisconsin early this morning. Visibilities in the fog
are mostly one half mile or greater. However a few patches of
dense fog have developed from around Monroe east to around
Janesville and Beloit. The dense fog is reducing the visibility to
one quarter mile or less.

The fog will gradually thin and dissipate through 10 am CST this
morning. Until then, slow down if you drive into one of these
thicker fog areas. A few slick spots may also develop on untreated
roads due to below freezing temperatures in the fog.
