.SHORT TERM...
Today and Tonight - Confidence...Medium
Surface/850 millibar trough slowly working across the area. Very
mild airmass continues to be in place. With highly amplified
mid/upper level trough axis hanging back to our west, perturbations
in the flow and jet dynamics will result in keeping light rain
chances going for much of the day. Plenty of this upstream with
expanding coverage across eastern Iowa as well as northern/central
Illinois. Appears that better cold advection later today and this
evening will lag the qpf so this will be a mostly liquid event.
Still can't rule out a mix or a few flakes on the tail end later
today/this evening, though GFS and ECMWF whisk qpf out of the area
pretty quick. Back edge of def zone may pivot back westward a bit
with the cyclogenesis to our east but keeping precip from that
over the waters for now. Pronounced cold advection takes hold
tonight with amplifying low level thermal troughing on gusty north
winds.
.LONG TERM...
Friday through Monday...Forecast Confidence High...
Friday should be a dry but blustery day across the region, with
north winds gusting to between 20 and 30 MPH at times. Combined
with temperatures around freezing, it will not be a terribly
pleasant day to be outside.
Winds will diminish Friday night as low pressure pushes further
east. An approaching shortwave will bring high clouds to the area
for Saturday, but with dry low levels, no precip is expected.
The quiet conditions will continue through Monday, with highs
Saturday-Monday in the low 30s, lows in the upper teens and low
20s.
Christmas Day through next Thursday...Forecast Confidence Low...
Heading into Christmas Day, most guidance brings a low amplitude
shortwave through the area. A few models have some light QPF
across the area between late Monday night and Tuesday evening,
though moisture availability is questionable. Not all hope is
lost for a white Christmas/Christmas Eve in at least parts of the
area, though plenty of changes are likely over the next 5 days.
Beyond Christmas, extended guidance continues to suggest the
possibility of a significant storm system across much of the
nation's midsection during the latter half of next week. It's
far, far too early to determine particular impacts, but given
widespread travel between Christmas and New Years, this will
definitely be something to keep an eye on over the coming week.

.AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...Expecting ceilings to lower through mid
morning as surface/850 trough continue to slowly move through srn
WI. Seeing some ceilings drop to MVFR levels with some expansion
of IFR across wrn IL. Trajectories are pulling this northward into
our area. So will continue the trend of heading the ceilings
downward. Expecting vsbys to be largely at MVFR levels this
morning with some patchy fog. Areas of rain will continue due to
the low level trough as well as a slow moving mid level trough.
With the meaningful cold air advection lagging will keep much of
this liquid though a flake or two cannot be ruled out later today
into early this evening. With the surface trough passing this
evening and low pressure strengthening across the OH Vly, expect
gusty north winds to ramp up with cold air advection regime.

.MARINE...With passage of surface trough tonight and evolving
cyclogenesis across the Ohio Valley the pressure gradient will
surely tighten up. So will go ahead and elevate the Gale Watch to
a Gale Warning and introduce a small craft advisory for the
nearshore waters. Gusty north winds and high waves will be likely.
While the Gale conditions wrap up later Friday afternoon, the
small craft winds will likely persist into at least parts of
Friday night.
