.SHORT TERM...

Today and Tonight - Confidence...Medium to High.

The main forecast concern today is the cloud cover. Forecast
models are struggling quite a bit with the current situation,
which makes their output for the rest of the day hard to trust.
Widespread stratus across the region isn't showing signs of
budging much today. The problem is that the southern edge of the
stratus is across the forecast area, with eastern and far southern
locations currently mostly clear. Will see some fog in these
clear areas this morning.

Thinking that the stratus will slowly nudge eastward...maybe a
little southward too. This is based on the movement of surface
high pressure and the latest satellite trends. The main impact
with the location of the clouds will be high temps of the day.
Forecast highs might be a little too mild where clouds linger all
day...and probably too cool for locations that get some sunshine
today.

Clouds will increase this evening into tonight ahead of
approaching strong low pressure. Model trends have been to delay
the onset of precipitation. There is a lot of dry air below 10 kft
in model soundings late tonight, but a decent amount of lift as
well. Figured it was at least worth a slight chance mention in the
southwest.

SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Medium to
High.

Short range guidance remains in good consensus and run to run
agreement on piece of short wave energy now moving through the
southwest CONUS moving east into the southern Plains later
today and tonight, and then pivoting northeast later tonight
and Saturday.  The shift of the system to the northeast on
Saturday will be due to a secondary short wave digging southward
into the southwest CONUS, contributing to amplifying long wave
troffing over the western CONUS.  Increasing south to southeast
winds ahead of associated strengthening Plains low pressure will
pull deeper moisture rapidly northward tonight into Saturday.
PWAT rapidly increases to around three quarters inch on Sat which
is getting close to 200% of normal for early December.  Short
term guidance is slowing down precipitation spreading into southern
WI late tonight into Saturday morning due to initially parched
atmosphere across the area and strengthening southeast low level
winds.  Onset time across CWA pushed back a couple hours
to mainly between 15Z and 18Z Saturday morning.  The later precip
start time bodes well with less of a chance for a period of freezing
rain and glazing due to cold pavement temps.  Metro Roadcast has
pavement temps warming above freezing by 15-17Z across CWA, so a
narrower window for glazing.  However, drier air initially in place
at precip onset will result in a better bag of rain/sleet and snow,
especially in northern CWA on Sat.  Critical thicknesses and top-down
ptype indicate the mixture may hold on much of the day across
northern CWA until warmer air temporarily oozes north Sat night.

Plains low pressure becomes cut-off across IA Saturday night before
further weakening and transitioning to open mid-level wave on Sunday
and moving slowly eastward.  This will result in persistent light
precipitation across CWA Saturday night into Sunday, with mainly
liquid in the southeast and a mixture in the northwest.  By the
time the precip winds down later Sunday, some northwest areas will
have received several inches of snow.

.LONG TERM...

MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Medium.

No surprises in the extended period outlook as Medium Range
guidance remaining in good agreement on Wisconsin and the upper
Midwest remaining in the cold northwesterly steering flow through
the period.  The more active weather will remain across the
southeast and eastern CONUS along the warmer, southern stream of
the split flow, along the low level baroclinic zone.

As high pressure builds into the upper midwest and western Great
Lakes early in the period, may be a period of lake effect snow
showers that brushes eastern areas.  Otherwise low level flow turns
more northwest as ridge builds into the central CONUS.  Increasing
northwest steering winds may eventually bring several mid-level
short waves and small chances for snow showers and flurries to the
area around Wednesday and Thursday.  Otherwise, the main story will
continue to be the unseasonably cold temperatures with daytime temps
mostly in the 20s.  An additional several inches of snow the next
few days, especially in the northwest CWA, may drop overnight temps
into the single digits, pending cloud cover and winds.

.AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Not high confidence in ceilings today given the spread of
solutions among forecast models The extent of stratus to the
north and west seems to indicate the cloudier solutions have a
better chance of verifying, so leaned the forecast in that
direction. Mostly clear areas in the east and far south early this
morning will probably fill in given the satellite trends. Will
probably see some fog in these mostly clear locations this
morning.

If conditions do improve for a time later today, low ceilings are
expected to move back in as low pressure approaches. Held off an
precip mention most places prior to 12Z Sat given models trending
slower.

.MARINE...

Gale force winds are expected across the nearshore and open waters
Saturday as strong low pressure approaches. The gales will likely
hang
on into Sunday night across the north half of the lake as the low
moves through. The highest waves will be across the western half
of Lake Michigan.

Northerly winds will remain elevated Monday, gusting up to 30
knots. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed for the
nearshore waters into Monday after the Gale Warning expires.
