.AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...
Snow will move in from the south around midnight tonight, winding
down west to east Friday morning. Total amounts are still expected
to be in the 1-2 inch range. The snow consistency will be fairly
average, with snow to liquid ratios around 12-15 to 1. There may
be some melting initially, with ground temps on the mild side and
air temps around the freezing mark when the snow beings to fall.
Cooling temperatures overnight should help more snow to
accumulate as the snow continues.
Lower ceilings and visibilites will arrive with the snow,
improving tomorrow morning as the snow winds down.

DISCUSSION...
TONIGHT AND FRIDAY - Confidence...Medium to High.
Short term guidance including GFS/NAM in good agreement and
consistent from earlier runs on bringing amplifying long wave trof
across southern Canada and the northern Plains southeast across the
western Great lakes. As the sharpening trof settles into the region
overnight, a strengthening short wave embedded in the increasing
southwest flow will move just southeast of Wisconsin from the
central MS Valley into the central Great Lakes Friday morning. The
strongest synoptic lift will remain southeast of southern WI,
which will be associated with a coupled jet, and a tighter low
level baroclinic zone. However weaker synoptic lift does affect
southern WI north of this system late tonight into Friday morning.
Mid-level q-vector convergence increases to around 30 units
during this time as a brief period of mid-level frontogenetical
forcing moves through southern WI. This frontogenetical forcing
does tap into a brief period of enhanced lift in the better
dendritic growth zone. The period of enhanced lift looks to last
only 1-3 hours. Short term guidance QPF generally in the .1 to .2
inch range for the 12 hour period. Road temperatures will likely
be around freezing at the onset of the snow, but sub-surface
temperatures remain above freezing. Initial accumulations will
likely be on colder grassy surfaces, bridges and overpasses with
more gradual accumulation on untreated well-used roads and walks.
Went with snow-liquid ratio's around climatological normal, around
12-13 to 1, which continues to generate snow amounts mostly 1-2
inches. Due to lighter amounts, and some question as to amounts on
road surfaces, held off on Winter Weather Advisory for now but
per coordination with GRB, posted Special Weather Statement
highlighting snowfall during the Friday morning commute. Never the
less, a little extra time is warranted for the morning commute.
The snow will taper off and end from west to east during the
morning, with blustery northwest winds developing for the
afternoon.
Friday night - Confidence...Medium
Gusty northwest winds with cold air advection are expected in the
wake of the departed low pressure system. The progs suggest some
lingering shsn or flurries especially across the north and
northeast portion of the forecast area. This is due to lingering
500 millibar cyclonic flow on western side of trough. The cyclonic
shear zone does lift north of the area as the night wears on so
precipitation potential will wind down especially after midnight.
But it will be cold and blustery.
Saturday - Confidence...Medium
A less windy day is in store with some sunshine expected. Surface/850
ridge axes will be shifting through the area. Winds do turn
southwest though overall thermal advection looks weak.
Saturday night through Sunday night - Confidence...Medium
WAA increases Saturday night with the 12z GFS coming more in line
with other models shifting the isentropically driven
precipitation more north of the cwa. The low is expected to track
to our north with thermal ridging likely through at least Sunday
morning. As the low and a trailing cold front shift east, we will
see cold air advection commence Sunday night. The GFS quicker on
this than the ECMWF. At this time the models are zeroing in on
northern and perhaps central WI for the better chances of some
light snow associated with this low.
Monday through Tuesday night - Confidence...Medium
Chilly pattern will persist. Low pressure is proggd to evolve well
south and track up the eastern seaboard. With high pressure
anchored in the Plains we will stay entrenched in a northwest wind
regime and low level thermal troughing. All in all looks like a
dry period at this point though the ECMWF and GEM hint at the far
southeast being grazed by the extreme northwest periphery of qpf
with the low to our southeast.
Wednesday and Thursday - Confidence...Low to Medium
All models are showing the high pressure ridge will likely shift
to our east this period ahead of another low. The 12z ECMWF has
come more in line with the GEM/GFS in showing a northern low
pressure system approaching the upper Midwest. However there are
still some timing differences with this feature as the GEM is
quite fast while the GFS and ECMWF slow and the GFS taking a more
compromise position. Should see a nice boost in temps into
Thursday with a milder push of air ahead of the low.
AVIATION(21Z TAFS)...Breaks in the low MVFR overcast continue over
parts of northern and southern CWA. This should continue for
another 1-3 hours, but wouldn't be surprised if clearing slows with
loss of insolation. Ceilings may climb to VFR for a time before
settling back to MVFR or lower late tonight with -sn breaking out
across the area.
MARINE...
Nearshore...Will post Gale Watch for the near shore waters for much
of Friday night. Strong northwest winds in the wake of rapidly
strengthening low pressure trof over the northern and eastern Great
Lakes may gust to 35 to 40 knots for a few hours overnight. Small
Craft conditions will likely start in the late afternoon Friday, and
persist for a time Saturday morning.
Open Waters...Gale Watch continues for the open waters for Friday
night into Saturday morning. Period of strongest west to northwest
winds will be from mid-evening Friday through about 12Z Saturday.
Possible a few gusts will reach Storm Force levels Friday night, in
central and northern Lake Michigan open waters. Water temperatures
remain in the mid to upper 40s, so even with the surge of cold air,
a mixed bag of precipitation can be expected late tonight through
Friday night.
